Scouting Report: Vic Enwere

Submitted by Magnus on

This week's scouting report is on Sugar Land (TX) Fort Bend Austin running back Vic Enwere, who was offered by Michigan last week. Michigan is looking for a RB in the 2014 class and has little/no hope of pulling in consensus top back Leonard Fournette, so they're casting their net a little wider with the offer to Enwere. He's currently committed to Cal.

Drive blocking TE who can also present something of a pass-catching threat.  Butt will be OK, Funchess may never be a great blocker, AJ Williams hasn't been a great blocker and never even gets targeted in the passing game, and the kid we have in 2014 plays receiver in HS.

Ian Bunting moved to TE for his senior year. He only had about 10 catches this year (IIRC) because of his new position.

EDIT: Furthermore, Paskorz might return in 2014, giving Michigan five tight ends. It's also a spot where walk-ons can frequently contribute in some capacity, so I don't think you need to overload with scholarship tight ends.

I'm thinking they're going to try to take a RB this class because nobody outside of Green and Smith has shown much life.

I agree they don't NEED to take one in this class but since Hayes and Rawls have been pretty... meh.. I don't think it's a bad idea to grab one if available.

EDIT: Forgot about Drake. But he's still a question mark because he hasn't been able to play much either with his injury.

Apologies for indulging in some speculation on MGoBlog, but . . .

IF (a) Michigan’s running back attrition results in Thomas Rawls and Justice Hayes playing elsewhere in 2014, (b) Drake Johnson’s injury is serious enough to prevent him from playing in 2014, and (c) there’s no running back available among the prospects in the high school class of 2014  who seriously is interested in Michigan and who would justify a scholarship offer under any circumstances other than desperation, have the coaches:
  • seen enough from Wyatt Shallman to believe that he could be a reliable back-up to Derrick Green and DeVeon Smith in 2014;
  • considered either shifting Dennis Norfleet back to running back or using someone like walk-on Anthony Capatina (whom they used to simulate Kain Colter on the scout team before the Northwestern game) in a role that otherwise might’ve been filled by Justice Hayes next year; or
  • shifting some other scholarship athlete who might not be in line for a lot of playing time on defense (say Ben Gedeon who was a decent running back in high school) to offense during the spring to determine whether he might give the team suitable depth at the running back position next season?

I do not believe Shallman is an option as a tailback, and he has reportedly been practicing as an H-back.

I also don't believe Capatina is a serious option, and I doubt the coaches see Norfleet as a contender for a RB job considering his lack of size.

Gedeon has played quite a bit at linebacker this year, and he will probably see an increased role next year. I think he'll be a starter down the road at either WILL or MIKE. I definitely don't think the coaches are going to shift him to offense.

So, considering that your review of Vic Enwere isn’t too optimistic about his contributing much on offense if he flips from California to Michigan, is wishful thinking for Michigan’s running back situation in 2014 going to be:
  • Drake Johnson fully recovers from his injury and is just as good as or better than he was before the injury;
  • Derrick Green and DeVeon Smith stay healthy and become productive and satisfied with the roles they’re given; and
  • A couple of good running backs will be part of Michigan’s 2015 class?

As for Ben Gedeon, I've also noticed that he has been getting some decent playing time at linebacker this year, and he seems to be a special teams regular.  I was just wondering whether he might've been considered as someone who might be able to step into an emergency running back role next season, if necessary, even if he still were being given a significant role on defense.

Given how the season has played out, I think Derrick Green probably expects to be #1 next season with Johnson/Smith battling it out for #2. I don't really think any of those three would be dissatisfied if they win the #2 job, provided that they get a fair number of carries. I think Toussaint has carried more of the load than any one back will get in 2014, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. If there is indeed going to be attrition, I believe the coaches will succeed in getting another back in 2014, even if it's not someone already on the radar.

there is attrition over the years.  So, my belief is that there should always be at least 1 or 2 in every class.  Personally, I'm glad they're offering a couple more 2014 prospects.
