I'm all in favor of keeping the best assistants on this team.  However, if Howard is going to roll in and do things his way, we need to allow him to hand select his assistance.

I think it's always good to have at least one staff member remain on board to bridge the gap, unless all the previous staff members are terrible or caught up in some scandal. Mattison helped the transition to Harbaugh, Fred Jackson helped a few transitions, etc. There are little things that happen in the day-to-day events and traditions of a team and school that need to be addressed.

My view is that we hired JH to be the Head Coach of the team because Warde felt that he was up to the task.  If that's the case, JH needs to build the team and the staff as he sees fit.  He wasn't hired to simply plug in and replace Beilein but to keep everything in place.  I get the sentiment of wanting to do that because things were going so well with Beilein, but the primary reason for that was Beilein himself.  Simply plugging JH into the Beilein role and trying to keep the band together likely wouldn't work.

That all said, I think that Magnus makes a good point.  There is something to be said for at least someone from the Beilein era around for purposes of continuity and player comfort level.  However, that person does not need to be an assistant coach.  We are already keeping Sanderson on, and the players spend as much time with the S&C staff as they do with the coaches.  We could also maintain continuity by keeping on some of the grad assistants or other ancillary staffers.  Not saying that I am against keeping one or more of the assistants, just saying that it is not a necessity.

Holy cow... he stayed on as Fisher's assistant the entire time they left here ?????  He must have a good life in San Diego...  Before the scandal, I thought he'd be eventually the coach in AA...

I'm excited he's coming back, as I think a lot of people (myself included) slept on his role in the team's improvements these past couple of years.  Wagner and Teske are immensely better players than they were when they arrived, and credit should go to him for helping that occur.

Saddi is an excellent coach and recruiter and provides continuity with the current roster and recruits. This is a good thing. Yak leaving is a shame but he was going to leave shortly either way for a HC job somewhere.

Saddi staying on makes a lot more sense than Yak staying on for many reasons. Saddi has been around longer than Yak and is a former D1 player. Also, he has done administrative duties relating to coaching, recruiting, etc. and knows the state of Michigan really well. He has coached guards and bigs so he has flexibility on what JH wants him to focus on and his track record speak for itself.  Finally, Saddi, not Yak, was the acting head coach when JB was recovering from surgery on oversea trip games.
