Question about spring practice

Submitted by white_pony_rocks on
Can somebody tell me why some schools like stanford and texas start spring practices in february and end in april and some schools like ucla start in april and end in april? wouldn't schools want as much spring practice as possible to get kids ready for the season, especially U of M who has a new qb and whose scheme is complicated?

well if its anything like highschool coaches can only meet for so long with players. So im guessing february to april spring practices are like once a week while april to april is like everyday. Someone correct me if im wrong

only so many hours of practice. I don't know the specifics, but some coaches may rather spread their practices out where some would rather go the two a day approach.

Maybe because it's a nice 70 degree in Texas right now. In April, it's hotter. Well, at least in Florida, that's the way it goes. Avg high in feb, march is around 75. April is 81.

you just get 15 practice sessions. So you could do it however you want. and I'd assume they build their spring practice schedule to avoid spring break, the end of quarters/semesters and final exams.

Some teams split it up. I could see the benefits of both. I think it might be interesting to split it up so you could introduce something for 5 practices..send everyone back to workouts for a couple of weeks and let them work and perfect the stuff taught on their own or however they skirt the NCAA rules. Then when they get back together they can work on more higher level stuff instead of just pounding your head against a wall trying to get a certains segment of your team up to speed.

15 practices is correct. They are also limited as to how many hours/week the players spend at their sport(which is a year round thing, but I'm not sure what the current # is). The 15 mandatory practices usually get interspersed with several "voluntary" workouts. This allows the team to get as much as possible out of the 15 practices. The hours per week thing is a bit of a joke. It used to be 20 hours back when I was in school. When you took practices, conditioning/weights, position meetings, team meetings... I don't think I ever had a week that required less than 40 hours during the season or spring ball. That is why so much time gets labeled as "voluntary".

You are allowed a certain amount of hours for spring practice; it doesn't matter when you take them. Teams like Miami, where the weather is a lot warmer, are starting next week. Teams like UM, where it is too bleeping cold this week, will start later. I don't see a competitive advantage either way.

the OP was under the false premise that you start spring practice and continue to practice until summer camp. i don't think he realized you are only allowed 15 practices for spring ball.

I was thinking the number 15 was correct before other people also stated that number so I am sure it is right but am I right in thinking that does not count the scrimmage, or is that considered one of the practices.
