The Other Brian - Recruiting Questions

Submitted by Thrillhouse on

What gives with Josh Gordon? His measurables are really good for a WR (6-4, 215, 4.55 40). I can't help but root for the kid because he's come out and said he'd commit on the spot if offered -

So why haven't we offered him? I see he's a 2-star on Scout. Is he just horrible at route running or catching the football or something? Did he lose time to injury? On paper, he seems like a perfect candidate to be the second outside reciever in this class. Is the coaching staff waiting for things to play out with Randel and Evans?

Second question, what's up with Dylan Farrington? Again, good measurables but it's out there that as of now, he wouldn't qualify. Is he like Carradine in that we'd offer him as soon as he does?

Thanks.

  • For whatever reason, the staff doesn't want Gordon as a WR. He is being recruited as a safety, but until he relents and is open to playing defense in college, he won't get a Michigan offer.
  • I would certainly hope they're not waiting for Rueben Randle. He's going to LSU, no matter where his teammate is going or where he visits.
  • Shaq Evans is a little murkier. For some reason Notre Dame fans think they have him in the bag. I look at quotes from Shaq, and I get the feeling like he wants to see how Michigan's offense goes this year. If UM throws the ball around a bit and doesn't use its WRs as just blockers, I think Shaq will give Michigan serious consideration, although in the end I'd be mildly surprised if he didn't pick UCLA or Colorado.
  • With the scholarship number being tenuous, I'm not sure if Michigan will even take another outside WR. Obviously if a talent like Shaq or Randle (lol) wants to come, you take him. But other guys they're looking at like Todd Thomas and Willie Haulstead might be left hanging if the class fills up at other positions (not like they'll be left without options, Haulstead is currently a Florida State commit, and Thomas might pick Pittsburgh anyway).
  • As far as Farrington, I know he's working his butt off to qualify, but even if he does, although he is impressive, I think in this case Michigan WILL wait it out on guys like Roh, LaLota, Graham, etc. to see what happens there before they offer Farrington.

I think you're thinking of Cameron Gordon, Brian Who Isn't Me. He's the instate guy.

Josh Gordon is the guy from Houston who smoked the AA combine and then fell off the map. IIRC Helmholdt said something to the effect of "will never get a Michigan offer, but it has nothing to do with his talent." But it wasn't grades either. Very mysterious.

Wow, I totally deserve a punch in the throat for that one.

*gack*

There we go. Jeez. Too many Gordons. I understand the appeal of unusual names, now.

But yeah, that's the same thing I remember hearing from Helmholdt on Josh Gordon. It did seem strange. His new article from Scout yesterday said he has a 2.5 GPA and a 21 ACT - not exactly scholarly, but not abysmal, either. That's intriguing. Maybe he has some skeletons in the closet that the common folk don't know about or something (it took some digging to find the skeletons in Willie Haulstead's closet, and the Fort was in meltdown mode for all of Sunday afternoon because of that fiasco).
