For Windows, .avi is always a good choice. I know I had the .mp4s from mgovideo, and I ended up having to convert them to mpeg2 then to .mov in order to get them to work in Final Cut Pro.
.avi is really your best bet. Try to go uncompressed 720p if you can, so you don't lose any quality.

For some reason, I can open the HD AVI files I converted them to in Windows MP (meaning I have the required Codecs), but when I import them into premiere, they have audio but no video, making cutting up the film impossible. I only have 9 days now until the season starts, and I don't have the video even prepped, not key.
I think I'm going to try installing CS4 and hope that works. Otherwise, is Final Cut Pro decent? I need to be able to do basic editing, but a few decent transition effects and such would be nice. Perhaps Premiere is overkill, but I do like it.

If you don't mind updating us with your progress, it would be very useful to some of us. I hope to tackle such a project somewhere down the line, and the knowledge on the conversion from ISO and mp4 would be grand.

Xilisoft DVD Ripper and Ultimate Converter handle the conversion just fine. For some reason, Premiere Pro will only give me audio after the conversion to HD AVI, no video. The files after the conversion play fine in windows media player, so I know I have the codec. /mindboggle

Final Cut Pro wins Emmys. Premiere makes fine home videos.

I don't own a MAC. What else would you recommend?
Edit: I'm going to install CS4 and give that a shot. But alternatives are still welcome.
