OT - Ricky Powers's Akron Buchtel team...
...lost in the state finals tonight, 13-12, in a game I just finished watching. Might have got robbed on a bad spot on a 4th and 1 going in for a touchdown, but great game and great seeing a UM grad giving back to his community...
Powers has turned that program around nicely...
No link, as the stories are just write-ups of the game...
Seems like the connections between Akron and UM are a little kismetish tonight...

Wow, that is one heck of a blast from the past. Thanks for that reminder!

Ricky was a favorite of mine. Good for him. Maybe he and Wheatley could find their way back to U of M one day.

On the other hand, I know the family of someone on the Watterson team -- quite a run for them. Was Powers the head coach? Wasn't clear why he didn't call time out sooner at the end of the game. But the refs also seemed to wind game clock, then reset the play clock, and allow Watterson to burn more time than they should have been able to.
For those not keenly watching division 3 Ohio state football, Watterson turned the ball over 6 times, including once on a fumbled snap while in end of game clock-milking mode, but pulled out the win. Both teams played very hard.
In any case, yeah, Ricky was a great back -- played very, very, hard.

Yes, Powers is head coach. I was a bit confused at the end too...the refs seemed to have brain freeze...

Ricky was a favorite of mine. I went to orientation with him. He seemed like a great guy.
Thanks for sharing.
