OT: proudest moment ever as a michigan fan

Submitted by andrewG on

My wife is in med school and just messaged me after rounds:

"i have a problem. i don't think i could ever treat patients who are ohio state people
we saw one today, and i just tensed up and felt really uncomfortable"

Could not be more proud.

Got me thinking, what are all of your proudest moments as a Michigan fan?

EDIT: this was meant to be more humorous than serious, and only to serve as a segue to the question at the end. apologies to all those offended.

Our pug had to have palate surgery at MSU.  $1600 later they sent her out in a spartan bandanna.  Whipped out a lighter and burned it in the parking lot.  Unfortunately, I couldn't bathe the dog post-op either.

This has nothing to do with any moment from a game. I walked into the K-Mart in my hometown(it's in ohio) with my daughter. We were dressed all in Maize and Blue. There was one of those butt ugly blow up brutus buckeye balloons in the aisle. The worker walked up to us and asked if we wanted a picture with brutus. I assume she asked as a joke. My daughter who is 7 years old walked up to the brutus balloon and  with all her might ,gave it a dong punch. I laughed so hard i damn near pissed myself. That made me proud to be a Michigan fan.

I wanted to skip the issue of the self-proclaimed judges here regarding the OP's priorities, in favor of skipping to the question...but, I can't. Chill out, no one appointed the regulars of this blog to be anyone's keeper.

Skipping the witches....

Proudest moment was the winning of the 97 Rose Bowl, as I was home on leave at the time, and it turned out to be the last game I ever got to see with my father before he died. He taught me to love Michigan football, and I guess that would the game I'd pick for it to be the last.

One of my favorite all time moments was Walter Smith's 1994 finale.  Details fade with the years, so some of you may need to correct or supplement my memory, but my recollection is that he blew his knee out just before (or at the beginning of) his senior year.  He wasn't really an NFL prospect, so that was the end of the line football-wise.  He was elected captain and lead the team out of the tunnel and participated in coin-flips on crutches through the year.

By the end of the season, he had rehabbed to the point that he could lead the team out without crutches for the last home game (Minnesota).  With the game in hand, Lloyd sent him out for a play in the fourth quarter.  Everyone who had followed the story knew what was about to happen.  He lined up as wide as possible.  At the snap, he took one step forward and the QB (Collins?) hit him with an easy ball so he could fall out of bounds (right in front of the student section) before the DB got there.  He needed help to get up, but made it into the record books for his senior season.

I've been a season ticket holder since 1989, when I was a freshman, and have been blessed to see many very special moments -- and a few heartbreaking ones too -- but that would be near the top for me.  Not an particularly significant "football" moment, but an awesome "life" moment.  For me, every bit as moving as the Mealer walk for me (taking nothing away from that).
