OT: Green Bay Packers

Submitted by Yahtzee on

I just heard that they offered Brett Favre $20 million to "not" play for them.  So let's think about this "payout vs. trade".

If they were to trade him.

1.  They don't have to pay him $20 million.

2.  The Packers could get a 2nd to 3rd round draft pick for him.

3.  He only has 1 (maybe 2) years left, then he is going to re-retire!

With that said the Packers can either:

1) Trade him and get a nice draft pick out of the deal, won't have to pay him, and will maybe play against him in the next two years (depending on who they trade him to).

2) Pay him $20 million not to play, won't get a draft pick, and will not risk the one or so games they would play against him.

If I were the Packers GM this would be an easy decision and Brett would be packing his bags faster than Brett can say "I'm a wrangler man"!

Take everything Brett Favre does, and pretend TO did the WR equivalent, and then imagine the media coverage. For instance: Brett Favre admitting to alcoholism/painkillers vs. TO "suicide attempt" Brett Favre throwing a pick in the playoffs that costs GB the game (pick a time, any time!) vs. TO dropping a TD pass and costing his team a playoff game Brett Favre "contemplating" retirement for months on end three off-seasons in a row vs. TO doing the same thing Brett Favre retiring, and then "coming back" before the beginning of the next season, and demanding an outright release if he can't be the starter. I think the imaginary TO articles would be far less friendly.

Agree with you to a point. No one would be able to point at Favre as the media whore the TO is with the endzone dances, the sharpee stunts, the jumping on the cowboy star, the drew rosenhouse (spl?) press conferences. But this crap with Favre is just an over the hill player who still has some ability left (more than anyone on the lions roster) afraid to let go and retire. I'm not sure if it is his ego that needs the constant stroking (I'm rather certain that TO's ego does), or he's tired of being around the house with the family, or he just doesn't have anything else in his life to fill the new void. Whatever it is, he has put the Packers in a terrible spot. They should trade him and capture whatever value they can. My guess is that the minimal downside publicity to the Packers would be more than offset by the ability to capture a couple of draft picks from a trade of a guy that you believed that you would get nothing for (given they believed he had retired). They should spin the story as found money and go on. The Niners survived trading Montana to KC and watching Jerry Rice grow braids in Oakland. Cut the cord and get the old Cajun off of Sports Center.

Favre doesn't do the end zone dances, but isn't his endless "aww shucks im a humble gunslingah" act the same type of thing?

If Favre dances on the field, it's "Aww man is he having FUN or what!!" from ESPN, etc.

He's the same media whore as a ton of other sports stars, but he doesn't get called on it.

Personally, the "ahh shucks" thing doesn't strike me the same way TO's shenanigans do. Do I believe that Favre is some ego-less player who puts the team first -- no. I think there are very few players who truly put team success first. And judging by Favre's actions over the last few weeks, I think it is apparent that his ego needs plenty of stroking. I completely agree with you that ESPN and the other networks need to stop fawning over him and cast a more critical light on him. The story would be portrayed very differently for most players, TO in particular.
