OT-Great article on shady dealings in basketball recruiting

Fascinating article on basketball recruiting, focusing on Maryland coach Gary Williams. Maryland has gone downhill recently, largely because of an inability to haul in top-flight recruits. As the story points out, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to, except that Williams refuses to play the game that now characterizes recruiting. "Williams believes he lost at least two local players because of cheating and cited three other cases in which cheating took place. Williams declined to detail his allegations because he would be 'run out of town.' 'Nobody has ever accused me of cheating in recruiting in my career,' Williams said. 'That is a good thing, supposedly. But people turn that around and say, 'He won't play the game.' You do it [my] way, and you are criticized for not cheating.' http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/12/AR20090… Seems Beilein's another coach who avoids playing that game, emphasizing untouted recruits, coaching, and the system. Clearly, he's not as interested in playing the recruiting game as some others, and that's affected our ability to get recruits like Nate Lubick. (From what I hear, Georgetown was a little more *ahem* considerate when he visited there than Michigan was.) I would LOVE, truly LOVE, to see what coaches like Matta and Calipari have done to draw all these 5-star recruits to their largely unheralded programs. Michigan got caught, and our program has changed entirely since then. But we're just the ones who got caught.

..that bball and football is mared with dirty scumbags who cheat. Look at USC. We have an "idea" how Ohio Hate does things ah um cough cough BOOSTER $500 HANDSHAKES ack cough. The NCAA, like any other regulatory agency, is inept but designed to be so. It's only in those rare situations where the evidence is just too over whelming --like in the UM/Martin case -- where it has to act.

evidence has to fall into their lap. There is no explanation as to why USC has not been put under the microscope for Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo. The NCAA is much too interested in making meaningless rules (like for excessive celebration in football) than they are for enforcing true recruiting violations. Since Miles Brand is seriously ill, perhaps the next NCAA leader will be more aggressive in this area. I am not a Gary Williams fan but I have to respect his resolute attitude about avoiding third party recruiters- although it may cost him his job. What does everyone think Ed Martin was anyway?

Ed Martin was a remora who latched on to Perry Watson and used him to latch onto numerous kids in the Detroit area, many of who did NOT go to UM. Ironically enough, when Watson stopped feeding him was when he got really, really greedy and bought himself a brand new Webber grill (cough, hack) for his back yard. He knew tons about the game, though. I just don't think he should have ever been catagorized as a "UM Booster." And I still want to know why USC and OSU didn't get treated like UM did.
