Open tryout?

OK, Is this a joke? Dan Feldman on mgo.licio.us writes about open tryouts at 6am Wed. Sept. 3 for the football team? This must be a joke, right? For a walk on spot? Please tell me he's kidding, or how I'm missing the whole boat here. . .

Everyone gets a chance. This is the source of walkons. There is some sort of NCAA rule that tryouts can't be held until school starts

Thanks Emil Faber. The article states this is a new Rodriguez tradition, is that right? Has Michigan done this in the past? Guess I never understood what a "walkon" meant, I just thought they were bench warmers. Seems like a great way to find talent at these smaller schools who don't have the advantage of being scouted.
