Nice column this afternoon: Webb on Peppers & his Michigan Visit

Submitted by StephenRKass on

There's a nice column by Sam Webb in the Detroit News this afternoon about Jabrill Peppers and his visit to Michigan.

(Michigan scores big on visit from five star CB  Jabrill Peppers.)  LINK:  http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130502/OPINION03/305020471/1131/SPORTS0201/Michigan-scores-big-visit-from-five-star-CB-Jabrill-Peppers

In brief, his visit went very, very, well, and put Michigan up.

"Everything (on the visit) caught me by surprise," admitted Peppers. "It is no secret that I grew up a Michigan fan. Obviously I had high hopes for the visit, but they clearly exceeded those. I was just like, 'Wow.' I don't want to give too much away (laughter), but it was a good visit."

It wasn't a red-carpet treatment that allowed Brady Hoke and Co. to set the visit standard by which others are now being measured. Turns out, it was exact opposite. "Real recognize real," Peppers said matter-of-factly. "That's the shortest and sweetest way you can say it. Real recognize real. They didn't put on a show. Basically who they are — they remind me of my coaches right now. That's how comfortable we felt there.

Jabrill is also very positive on Mattison. He says:

"I love the way Coach Greg Mattison uses his corners and his scheme. It absolutely fits into my style of play — aggressive (and) fearless. He wants his corners to be fearless. If he wants you to go lockup on an island, you had better lockup on that island. If he wants you to come off the edge, you better come off the edge ready to bring some pain."

He added: "The players (at Michigan) were as cool as could be. I don't even really know how to explain it. It is just a feeling you get."

Sam has a lot more to say . . . Obv., Peppers is an incredible talent, which everyone agrees with.  It basically comes down to his visit to Stanford.

But I bet he wasn't 185 as a junior in high school, because that's how old Peppers is.  I wouldn't be surprised if that 185 is a little inflated as it is, since even now he's barely 200.

My thought was that he was about 165 and Peppers is about 205 (since he's listed at 205-210).  Now that's I've looked them up, their Rivals weights are 31 pounds different, so although I was a little off, my point certainly still stands.

Just the way he's talking about Michigan and mentioning Woodson, the greatest defensive player in the history of college football since players started playing only one way. Makes me have a happy.

Jabrill Peppers wouldn’t let an injury deter him from ultimate success.

The Paramus Catholic junior speedster set a meet record as he blazed to a 10.83 clocking to win the 100-meter sprint at Thursday’s sixth annual Don Bosco Ironman Invitational at Ramapo College.

Peppers, who slightly strained his right groin at last week’s Penn Relays, beat the mark of 10.95 by Hackensack’s Conroy Walker in 2010.

"I didn’t want to aggravate it but I ran overall pretty well. I came out of the blocks quick and just kept in a natural rhythm," Peppers said. "I’ve done as well as 10.8 this year and my personal best is 10.77 last year, but I think I can get it down to 10.4 by the time the states come around. That’s my goal and I think I can achieve it."

Hate to be creepy but I read a tweet from Jabrill saying was wearing his Team 135 shirt yesterday...
