New Info on the New Elbel Field
Information on the new Elbel Field was just released. Link here.
Seems to be in line with expectations, but now more detail is available including some early renderings. Expected to be completed for this upcoming marching band season.

Still pretty bummed the original Elbel is going away. Having that big green space was really nice when I was living right around there the last two years of school. Especially in the summer.

Wait, I thought I read Elbel Field was going to become a huge dorm...
Update: here https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/u-m-add-2300-bed-dorm-elbel-site-band-move-fingerle-site
How can fit? I see the article references the dorm, but not the map

The dorm will be south of Hill. The new field for the band will be north of Hill.
The new field looks good to me!
Edit: Per original discussion, I thought the band field would be west of the RR tracks where most of Fingerle was located, if I remember correctly. But the map puts it north of Hill on the same side of the tracks as the dorm. For old-timers, this seems to include the parking lot of the Coliseum.

The Coliseum parking West of S 5th will all be part of the new Elbel. The Coliseum parking just to the North and East of the building (between 5th and Division) will not be consumed. Yet. That may all fall into the "Phase 2" construction project.
Regent Ron Weiser has bought a number of properties in that area bounded by the Coliseum, 5th, Division, and Madison. Another dorm project may go in there. If it goes forward, Weiser has said he will sell those properties to the University at cost. Moving ahead with that part was also discussed today.

Old Elbel (the one discussed in your link) --> 2300 bed dorm
Fingerle Lumber --> New Elbel (the one discussed in OP's link)

What’s the point of the “partial field”, particularly the weird triangular bit?

For most shows, there are reserve members who don't play in the show on Saturday. They practice things like marching fundamentals during the week. The partial field actually looks like an improvement, since the "reserve field" used to just be the grass section of Elbel, which was in much worse shape than the main turf field.

Fingerle was a great, under-the-radar tailgate spot for the last few years. I’m selfishly bummed that it won’t be available any more.

I remember marching on the blacktop every afternoon and working on drum features in the baseball diamond preseason. Good times at Elbel.

I was in the band in the late 70s and early 80s. Elbel was a hot parking lot.
Kids today!
