National Preview Magazines

To anyone who cares to comment:

For the last decade I have purchased a college football preview magazine or two every summer to help get charged up for the coming season.  I usually buy a national preview and a Big Ten preview.  This year, I have already resolved to purchase Hail to the Victors 2008, to which Brian so expertly contributes and edits.  While I consider HTTV the only Big Ten preview I need, I still want to get a national preview mag to increase my knowledge and whet my appetite for college football.  I suspect many of you might do the same so I simply wish to get your opinion of which one is the best to purchase.  Mags I have tried over the years include Street and Smiths, Lindy's, Athlon, and Sporting News.  I have enjoyed these the for the most part, but certainly they all have their flaws and annoying elements.  It would be especially helpful if any of you already have one of these or any other publication previewing the 2008 season that you could specifically comment on, give pros and cons of, etc.  I would be greatly appreciative of any opinions you can provide.  Thanks and Go Blue!

P.S.  I am aware of Phil Steele's guide which looks unmatched in it's statistical content, but having thumbed through it a couple of times at a newsstand, it seems like it's not quite as "readable" as some of the others.  Let me know if I'm way off base on that...

I like Steele a lot. Not many good articles, but great info--and he has models in the back of the book that have been really accurate at predicting teams that will either do better than expected or worse, based upon things like draft choices lost, letterman lost, or my favorite, turnover margin
