Michigan Tennis Update

Submitted by VCavman24 on

Today, both the Michigan Men's and the Michigan Women's tennis teams played their first round matches in the NCAA tournament.

The men played Virginia Tech in Lexington and lost 4-2.  Michigan won the doubles point, yet couldn't pull out three more singles victories.  This is a slightly disappointing end to the season for Michigan, who finished second in the Big Ten regular season with a 9-2 record and finished second in the Big Ten Tournament, both times to Ohio State.  This also means Michigan will not receive many Directors' Cup Points.  Fortunately, however, Stanford also lost in the first round to LSU.

On the other hand, the 10th ranked Women's tennis team easily took care of business at home, beating IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) 4-0.  Michigan was winning all of the matches that were not finished easily.  Michigan will play Notre Dame, who beat NC State, tomorrow at 1:00.  Michigan will be favored for that matchup.  On a Directors' Cup Note, Stanford plays Miami (OH) later today.  Stanford should win easily.

man had at UM. Definitely disappointing for the mens team. I am not positive but Spencer Newman may be joining the team next year but I thought he was eligible/joining this year.  The womens program is on the rise and next year look out. UM added Laura Ucros from Columbia and the key players return..final 4?

Sadly, Stanford will pass Michigan this weekend in the Director's Cup standings, with an already guaranteed 55 points in the women's water polo tournament.

Really hope the women make it through.  I'm planning on going to visit friends next weekend who are professors at Illinois.  Definitely want to go to the tournament if we are still in it.  Just wish I could take my team to watch, but I doubt the high school would pay for the fuel and lodging for that type of trip.

Other than the constant shutout losses to Ohio Michigan men's tennis is quite fun to watch and follow. We can beat any other team in the conference on a good day, or repeatedly if the other team is State or Wisconsin.
