Michigan-OSU Week Tradisions

Can someone enlighten me about the tradition of smashing a buckeye nut in an Ann Arbor cemetery during the OSU game week?  I never knew about this while was a student a couple decades ago.  I think I watched a video of Harbaugh doing the honors the first year he was back as coach.  When did this tradition start?  When does is take place?

They've been doing the grave walk for awhile now, though I didn't find out about until late in my time as a student. Never ended up going, I think in large part because of the change from an 11 to 12 game schedule, which moved The Game from the Saturday before Thanksgiving to the Saturday after (still annoyed by that)...

I'm not sure when it started, I believe it's the Wednesday before the game. I went as a student once and again last year.

I might do it on my own time, but I'm not going with that group again. They all brought cigars and I got a ton of smoke in my eyes.

I don't know how to politely say this, but it doesn't attract the best group either. Some of the people are fine, but a lot, including the leader come off as childish and obnoxious throughout the whole thing.

This grave walk thing showed up in the past decade but before the criticism of Bo’s handling of the Dr. Anderson scandal surfaced. It might have been around but wasn’t really a thing until 2015 or 2016.
Not something I would attend, so I can’t comment on it.

My wife and I attended the first year of the Harbaugh era.

We were lagging behind the main group and an SUV pulled up. My wife said, “Here comes Harbaugh!” because he has an unmistakable gait. He approached me and sized me up, probably because I’m an enormous brute of a man and he was wondering if he should know me. He introduced himself and I offered, “Welcome home, Coach!”

Got to meet his dad and, if memory serves, his daughter. Then he strode off to Bo’s grave. His walking pace is difficult to keep up with.
