Michigan finishes 4th for CBS Best in College Sports in 2017-18

Sadly, those bums down in Columbus snagged the top spot, while Bama and Oklahoma finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Rather nice placement for us given how underwhelming football was last year. Other notable Big Ten teams in top 25 were MSU at 11th, PSU at 13th and Wisconsin at 25th

Comparing these results with the Directors Cup, this list seems a MUCH more reasonable to the AVERAGE fan.  I think both are good but highlight different things, this one highlights the strength in the main three sports Men's football, basketball and Woman's basketball (while trying to account for second tier sports with 2 "wild card" while the Director's Cup highlights depth across all sports.

Michigan had a good year:  4 and 6 = 10

OSU: 7 and 1 = 8

Stanford: 9 and 1 = 10

Florida State: 8 and 9 = 17

Only these four team made the top 10 in both rankings

Yeah, it's nice to see Stanford somewhere other than #1.  My problem with this ranking is it's not diversified enough; if you have a down year in FB or BB, you'll fall quite a bit.  I'd like to see some combination of this and the Director's Cup, where every sport is counted, but they're weighted slightly.  So the main "spectator" sports (by CBS's definition) count more, but if you're consistently earning points across 10 or 12 sports, it's worth something, too.

Agree completely.  How fencing or team pistol can even matter relative to the other sports is preposterous with regard to the Director's Cup.  A blending of both rankings makes the most sense with each sport carrying a particular value, football clearly being #1 w/ basketball close behind.  In the end we're rewarding the revenue sports and the schools that make the biggest difference in these sports, but everything should be stacked-up accordingly because this is also where the highest quality of competition happens within collegiate sport.

I have to think hockey and basketball carried quite a bit of the weight here, which makes me wonder how much higher it could have been with a more impressive football season. We will never know, but even at that, being in the top five on such a list really is not bad at all.
