Great day yesterday for the Maize & Blue.

#12 Michigan Field Hockey was the only game in town last night. The Wolverines took on #3 Connecticut, a team who won the National Championship in 2017. Michigan entered the game 2-2 with a blowout win of #10 Wake Forest and a win over Cal, losses to #1 North Carolina in the season opener and last Friday in a shootout at #21 Stanford.

Michigan surprisingly got out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Fay Keijer and Kayla Reed, both in the 2nd quarter (NCAA changed field hockey timing from halves to quarters beginning this year).

UConn drew closer in the 3rd with a goal to make it 2-1 Michigan.

But before the Huskies could make a comeback, freshman Sarah Pyrtek banged home a roof shot to put Michigan up 3-1. UConn added a goal in desperation mode but it was too late as that goal came with just a minute left before the end of the game.

#12 Michigan upsets #3 Connecticut, 3-2. The first Michigan win over UConn since 2005. Michigan is now 3-2 on the season and will go up to Mt. Pleasant for a Sunday matinee game with Central Michigan.

Michigan Women's Soccer under 2nd year head coach Jennifer Klein is trying to build themselves up to the level Michigan Field Hockey has been at for many years. Michigan took to the road last night for a lone game this week: a long trek out to the West coast to face #13 Washington State.

Michigan got out to a FAST start to say the least.

Sarah Stratigakis put Michigan up 1-0 in the 1st minute! And just two minutes later, it was 2-0 Michigan thanks to a goal by Meredith Haakenson. Haakenson has been on fire in her sophomore season with 4 goals and 9 points in just 7 games.

Wazzu could hardly get anything past Michigan's outstanding goalie Hillary Beall. She made a career-high 12 saves last night. Washington State did get a goal in the 70th minute but Beall continued to make big saves and it got the job done.

Michigan upsets #13 Washington State 2-1. The Wolverines are now 5-2-0 on the season and hand WSU their first loss of the season. It's just the second win over a ranked team in the Jennifer Klein era. It also ends Washington State's nation-leading non-conference unbeaten streak at 11 games. Michigan begins B1G play on Thursday at #8 Penn State.
