Mason Parris (Wrestling): World Champion

Congrats to our heavyweight wrestler who won gold at the Junior World Wrestling Championships earlier today in freestyle wrestling. He put on an absolutely dominating performance against the best in the world in his age group (18-20 years old). Huge accomplishment for the young man and hopefully a harbinger of things to come!

Do many of the top guys participate in this tournament?  I don't know any of the international guys, but have to wonder if guys like Stevenson or Kerkvliet even tried out for the team.

Stevenson tried to qualify for the U.S. Senior team. You're right about Mason not having to compete against some of the other top junior heavyweights in the US (Kerkvliet, Cassioppi) for various reasons. That's why there was some concern when Mason won the spot as he has very little world level freestyle experience. He definitely proved the doubters wrong though as he teched his way to the finals and got a pin in the gold medal match.

Re: the international field, keep in mind world freestyle tournaments are their main stage (no NCAA season to take priority), so the World Championships draws the best from each country.

Did you see that Coon lost in the first round of the Pan Ams 8-0? Kind of surprising after he pinned his way to the championship match in the Worlds last year. I guess the guy he did lose to was a former bronze world medalist. But weird how that guy then lost not pulling Coon through the repercharge (sic).

I did see that. Was a tough draw for Coon in the first round. Coon lost to Gable in the world team trials in freestyle earlier this summer. It wasn't even really close. Hopefully Coon has a good world tournament this fall and then takes a run at an Olympic medal next year before pursuing a career at NASA. Whether he wins another world medal or not, he seems to be a fantastic kid and I'm sure he'll be successful in whatever he pursues.
