Marching band location at spring game

Submitted by Purkinje on
The marching band took up residence on the opposite side of the Stadium as usual during this year's spring game, and after soaking up their music for a couple of hours, I have to say that I liked them over there better. The sound actually reaches the pressbox side of the field when they're over there; usually during games I'm in the student section up behind them, and I can't hear them. Does anyone know if the move was permanent, or if it was just a one-time thing? I know they move around a lot, and I think it would be cool if they went back to the far side for a while. Was anyone in sections 27 or 28 low enough to see if the metal bars that usually separate the band from the crowd were still there?

Probably just a one-off thing. We sat there for last year's spring game as well. The problem is that those are premium seats worth major money, and the AD has no desire to put us freeloaders in them.

would be blasting into the opponents' bench. But you can hardly gather cheerleaders, etc., in that location. It won't work. It ain't gonna happen. Depending on where in Sections 44 and 1 the band were placed, it could be that they wouldn't be displacing PSD-donors, but rather the opponenent's team and coaches' tickets. That is generally where they are (the northern side of Section 1 and the southern side of 44). Anyway, like I say, it ain't gonna happen. By the way, I thought the "broadcast" sound for the Spring Game was pretty good (very nice job, Beckmann and Brandstatter), and I still am expecting that the overall acoustics, including p.a. announcements and band, will see the biggest improvements any of us have seen in our lifetimes at Michigan Stadium, come this fall. And it's about time. What we need, more than anything, is some new, creative genius programming. I HATE the usual stadium-rock. If I never, ever hear Journey, AC/DC or Queen in Michigan Stadium again it will be too soon.

That particular location seems to be the go-to location for offseason events. That's the Spring Game location, and that's where the Athletic Department parked the MMB for the Bo memorial in 2006. Probably not indicative of anything, likely just easier to manage them there than in the usual section in the corner.
