Harvard / Amaker

...beat BC tonight. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=290070103 I was driving home and some idiot radio guy was using transitive sports properties to make the case that Harvard was better than UNC (because BC beat them the other night, etc. etc.). Anyway, I paid this no mind until he started off on a soliloquy about how "Tommy Amaker is a Duke guy--they just know how to win" and all that. I laughed so hard I nearly crashed my car. Amaker still haunts my dreams, but wins like tonight's in Bloomington are making for far better panacea than I could ever have imagined.

While watching the MSU/UGA game at a bar, I met a former Boston U assistance b-ball coach. We got to talking about high school and college ball and inevitably started talking about Michigan basketball. His BU team actually played (and beat) Michigan in 2004. He thought Amaker was a "nice" guy but is no where near the caliber of Beilein. In fact, he Said Beilein is, in his mind, top three coaches in college basketball, FWIW. (DISCLAIMER: He also admitted he wasn't a huge fan of Coach K, or his proteges for that matter. He credited Coach K's success to his recruiting abilities. He was completely aware though of how crazy his argument sounds, even among his peers.)

I forget where I read it, but I think Harvard pulled in a better recruiting class last year than BC, so clearly Amaker can recruit. That said, I think this was far more the result of a "trap" game between UNC and Miami games than proof Amaker is a good coach. I'm surprised Jay Bilas wasn't running half-naked across the ESPN set after this game end, though.
