Future O-line and Helmuth

Submitted by mhwaldm on

It seems clear at this point that our offense cannot succeed as long as our O-line continues to play as bad as it has. So what do you think we can expect of the future? Are we doomed to more years of similar play? Or are the guys like Oneal and Mealer going to be enough to secure our line and give McGuffie the opportunity to break through to the secondary (or at lease the line of scrimmage).

Also whats with Helmuth. Hes now a sophomore and has gotten almost no playing time. He was recruited a the top fb in the nation and was known as a devastating power runner. Granted Moundros might be our best run blocker at this point, why is helmuth not seeing any carries. I know that rodriguez utilized his fb's in WV. Doesnt helmuth seem like a better option to run the ball at fullback than grady.

"Granted Moundros might be our best run blocker"

I think you answered your question on Helmuth right there, my friends (sorry, shamless John McCain dig there)

Did you see the video of McGuffie's TD from the Illinois game?  Moundros blocked.not one...not two..but THREE people.  He is a beast.  Me likes him.

The guys in their now just aren't comfortable. You need to get time in the system and time with each other in order to build confidence at O-line. I know it sounds cheesy, but having confidence in what you are doing at that position is important, it reduces hesitation, and if you hesitate on the offensive line, you get out of position, and if you lose position on your man, nothing good can happen.

is the better blocker, and helmuth didnt get a ton of carries at saline. that '#1 FB in the nation" thing didn't mean much to me. he still graded out at 3 stars and 8-10 in the state that year, iirc.
