Freshmen Participation Tracker after 7 Games

Submitted by milk-n-steak on October 17th, 2022 at 12:22 AM

After the game against Penn State, there wasn't much in the way of interesting changes about the Freshmen participation:

Only the nine freshmen who had already burned their redshirts participated in against PSU.  It could be that those nine are the only ones who will end up burning their shirts BUT, injuries happen, development happens, and who knows.

I hope the DBs and WRs stay healthy enough that Sabb and Walker don't have to burn their shirts .(Unless of course they earn that right in practice.)

I also hope that some of the guys sitting at 0–3 games get another shot or two before the end of the year.  Perhaps against an upcoming lesser foe...

Can you keep an eye on some other guys who haven't redshirted before (and thus could get one this year)?

  • Reece Atteberry
  • Greg Crippen

Erick All is going to get a redshirt for this year too. Nikhai Hill-Green would be eligible as well if he only plays 4 games.

For NHG, and this is purely speculative, if he came back for Rutgers and finished the regular season, would he have to sit out the post-season** to preserve a 2022 redshirt, or do post-season games count differently (i.e., not count at all)?

**(to be clear, obviously, the coaches wouldn't sit him for a conference championship or playoff game, and likely not for a Rose Bowl, either. This question is more about probing the rules than about any specific prediction for NHG)

Jim actually gave some thoughts on Erick and his injury a couple weeks ago after Maryland.

“No update. He wasn’t able to go today,” Harbaugh said.

Pretty candid and elaborate as far as Jim goes and speaking on injuries. lol

In seriousness, no. Pretty sure there hasn't really even been an identification of what "kind" of injury (musculature, bone, ligament, etc.). But most "insider" reports are that he's likely done for the year.

yeah, i saw that, but i didn't see anything after that, which is a bit surprising.

i'm generally on the side of "hey, it's none of our business," and i'm definitely not saying they "should" say something...but it seems like they usually say something if it's a season-ender.

I keep this pretty updated:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kXyhlMo2Yzfgv9QGhnyeJp65DL9mUxF…

See Elig/Yrs for the state of the roster (of relevant players--I don't count all the walk-ons). When a guy who hasn't redshirted yet hits five games I delete the "2022" from the redshirt year column and the spreadsheet this originates from updates his status from there.

I've been pressing various sites (Bill C, cfbdata, collegefootballdatabase, Fremeau, Michigan itself) to use my [eligibility]/[year in college] system which succinctly and intuitively tells you how long a guy could potentially play and how old he is. But it's unlikely that will happen when schools haven't even bothered to count 2020 in their figuring.

Jim Harbaugh:  "I'm a forgivin' and forgettin' Christian, and I say, if his rambunctiousness, and fumblin', is behind him..." He trails off and looks over his glasses at CJ Stokes, who sits sheepishly in the corner.  He lowers his voice.  "...and it is, ain't it, son?"

CJ Stokes: "uh, yes sir, it sure is."

Harbaugh:  "Then I say, we let 'im carry the rock!"

The room erupts in cheers.
