Franz return date still unknown: out of cast, will not play Friday but will travel to Bahamas
Juwan had a press conference today and discussed Franz's injury. The article has some quotes and info but the important points are that Franz is out of the cast and in a splint. They don't have a timeline for his return but he is out for Friday and will be travelling to the Bahamas. He has been practicing with the team as much as he can but once he's fully healthy he'll need to get back into game shape.

Progress! I'm excited to see him play, hopefully in the Bahamas.

Originally they said he’s out 4-6 weeks and that was I believe the last week of October so at the latest he should be back by the big ten opener against Iowa in early December

Man, has it been that long. I was just thinking that was pretty quick, but I'm wrong. Time flies during the football season.

Yeah no kidding. Just yesterday it seems like it was August, but in reality that was like 90 days ago now. It's because there are no days off.

Honest question: are they staying in an area mostly spared by the recent hurricane?

Seems like I recall the Northern Bahamas, mainly Freeport and the island to the east were the most damaged. I believe Nassau is where Atlantis is.

Colorado was totally in the path of the Caribbean hurricane!

The wall around Colorado took care of that problem.

The splint doesn't sound too promising. Presumably he's not shooting yet. It's probably going to take a minute to get it dialed in again, especially since he's probably got some atrophy from being in a cast.
November 21st, 2019 at 6:57 PM ^
Why is a splint not promising? It means he's out of the cast, moving to the next step of healing. IANAD, but I presume it also means being able to move his hand, do range of motion stuff at least.

It's obviously good news that he's progressing, but it seems like we're going to be on the high end of the estimated time, and that's just getting fully cleared medically, not getting back to ready to play at a high level.

A splint means probably 2 more weeks with no pressure on the injury. This is on his right (shooting) hand.
Going to take some PT to get the muscles back. Not going to play B4 BIG opener.
Anyone who fractures a wrist is'nt golfing in 4-6 weeks...this could linger.
November 21st, 2019 at 6:39 PM ^
likely depends on exactly where the fracture is. also, hopefully there is no ligament damage or sprain. imo, that is the type of injury that could linger.

Can we get you to teach a class to half the people here on how to make good thread titles?

Could he not play without hands and fire up some soccer-style header shots from three land?
November 21st, 2019 at 7:09 PM ^
He's got one good hand. Hook shot from 3.

For those who didn’t see in an article, Phil Martelli describes Franz as being very well conditioned through his work with Sanderson. Whether or not that means he’s in game shape will be seen in time. He’s also doing some basketball work, but not scrimmaging or the like.
November 21st, 2019 at 7:36 PM ^
With it being his shooting wrist, it could be a month or so after his first appearance that he is back to his normal form, shooting 40% from 3.
6 weeks is a very long time to not take any shots. It’s almost surely the longest time he has gone without shooting since he was a little kid. Anyone who has played basketball who hasn’t shot the ball in a while knows how odd it feels when you get back into it. I hope he picks it back up quickly. He will be doing a lot of shooting in practice once he is ready.
Very excited to have another Wagner in the maize and blue!

Any idea what exactly he did to break his wrist in practice?
November 21st, 2019 at 8:41 PM ^
Maybe he punched someone for asking a question?
November 22nd, 2019 at 8:28 PM ^
I heard he fell off the rim after a nasty dunk in pratice
November 21st, 2019 at 8:42 PM ^
I was really hoping he would be able to provide minutes for Louisville but that looks unlikely. They just need to play it safe, don’t want another year long injury like Caris.

Don’t quite get the “get into game shape” after his wrist is healed ..... wrist doesn’t prevent you from keeping in shape (should be in fantastic shape because all you CAN do at full speed is run and cardio train). Sure, he’ll take a couple weeks to sharpen up his shot but he can still 90% of his job with even if he has a club on his hand. Football players do it all the time.
either way can’t wait to see him on the court. he is gonna wreck some shit

I'd love to see him play, but I'm not gonna be optimistic he's gonna play in the Bahamas just because he's traveling...
"Hey kid, we're taking a free trip to the Bahamas, you think your hand is feeling well enough that you should come?"
"Uh.. (oww)... yeah Coach, I uhh (oww) think it'll be feeling better by then. I'll definitely come just in case"

I had my hand in a splint for 6-8 weeks... man it took like a month of physical therapy just to get my hand to almost normal motion and two months to back to fully normal.
My injury was a metacarpal and not a wrist, but it still will take some time to get back to game ready
