Former Wolverines in the ‘23 World Lacrosse Championship

The 2023 World Lacrosse Championship opened Wed night with a rematch of the 2018 Final between USA and Canada.  That gold medal game was won 9-8 by the US on a buzzer beater.  USA took the opener 7-5 in Group A pool play.  It got chippy after the horn so I expect more of the same when they meet again.

This tournament is being played in San Diego.  This is the 14th edition since 1967.   The US has won 10 and Canada 3.   There are 30 nations represented this year.  Uganda is the first African team to play in the tourney.  The gold medal game is scheduled for 7/1

Nick Decaprio who is playing for England scored their first goal tonight.  They are facing a highly skilled Haudenosaunee team which features Kyle Jackson, who assisted on their first goal.   It’s 7-3 Haudenosaunee in the 2nd qtr.

Mike Hernandez is playing for Mexico (0-2) and Eric Smith is on the Swedish team (0-1).  All games are aired on ESPN+

Good stuff - thanks for posting!  I saw former coach JP post something about this on Linkedin the other day and found it really interesting. I knew Kyle Jackson was Canadian but I didn't realize he was also a member of the Iroquois Nation. That is awesome, it must be incredible experience to play on such a talented team, especially the Thompson brothers.  I actually didn't know there was another brother who played defense and I'm surprised to see only 3 of them on the roster (and their cousin is also not on the team oddly).

It's also cool to see teams like Uganda and Mexico in it.  Also - Hong Kong, Israel, the Philiippines?  That's great.

Disappointed to see that Nanticoke is not able to play due to injury.  He just won a championship with the Buffalo Bandits.

the team from Japan is surprisingly very good considering they don’t have any players that played collegiate ball in the US.  They are up 5-0 on Wales.  Watched them run their offense flawlessly yesterday in an 18-0 win over Uganda.  The game really is growing internationally.
