Facebook Group - Boycott the Free Press?

Submitted by restive neb on

My earlier post (which was obviously full of fail) was my attempt to make the following point about a previously mentioned Facebook Group: Don't boycott the Free Press just to get them to fire Rosenberg. Boycott them long after that.

While Rosenberg is an asshat, the Free Press is even more responsible for the filth. They gave Rosenberg his platform, and paid him to say it. I was obviously wrong in thinking that I was clear in my extreme dislike for Rosenberg -- I compared his article to a hate-filled diatribe, and pointed out that he didn't see the need for evidence -- but I can see how those comments were lost in what I said. I said it sarcastically to make the point that the Free Press is even more to blame.

I deserved the negging for a failed post, but I wanted to make my point clear. Now, no more from me.

+1 for your introspection on your original post. Going beyond the obvious and really taking a good look at things is an admirable trait.

If I don't want to buy a crappy product, isn't that just a marketplace/opportunity cost decision? I think of a boycott as staying away from a business due to a policy or externality that doesn't really center around the product itself. For example, I don't buy Reebok shoes, but it has nothing to do with child-labor policies, the diversity of its business or whatnot - I just don't care for their shoes. Use of the term "boycott" implies a moral indignation and alludes to civil-rights activism that is just not appropriate to bring up in this case. The Freep product sucks, I have no interest in buying it. (I don't buy Ohio State tickets, either.)

The Free Press is going to be out of business soon anyway, facebook group or not. This is an identical situation to the Ann Arbor News academic story, a last-ditch effort to save the paper by going after the biggest sacred cow they could find.
