Daily story about Beilein at Canisius

Submitted by PeteM on

If you're interested in how John Belein got to where he is now this Daily article is worth a read.  It's basically about his 1996 Canisius team that was the first from that school in 40 years to make the tournament.  It has interviews with players and coaches from Canisius about how he dealt with the ups and downs, focused on fundamentals and how some things haven't changed (autobench and not fouling with a 3 point lead) and some things have (running zone Ds).  It also has some interviews about this year's team with Sean Lonergan and Aubrey talking about Beilein approaches coaching.

But as Lonergan said, Beilein knows college basketball isn’t a one-year thing. He’ll get his guys back in the gym again next year, passing, dribbling and catching just like always. He’ll give his team a chance in the end.

That was a very interesting piece connecting Beilein's approach in the past to his present. Indeed, it shows you that very little about the basic philsophy around players and personnel has changed really, but that it has worked so well wherever he has been.

I like that Beilein knows who he is and what he wants to do and he goes out and does it his way,  He will tweak things as needed, but he sticks to what has worked. He knows what he is doing.

of doing battle with the negative Nancies in the umhoops forum, but I ventured the thought the other day that Beilein really MIGHT often prefer a less-heralded player that he can mold for his system over some more vaunted player. This tends to confirm that.

I imagine that I am in the minority, but I am happy to see us going into battle against the Dukes and Kentuckies of this world with Beilein's system, even if we lose a few.
