I live here. It is a wasteland filled with effete, arugula-tossing espresso-sippers and trashy right-wingers...depending what neighborhood you're in. Also, our state flower is the Golden Poppy. We have a bear on our flag. And supposedly we were once a republic.

Southern California IS full of crime, pollution and general waste-landitude. Being here in the cultural center of the western half of the US has its advantages.

Dude NorCal is the greatest. Best place to see Asians Asians and Asians. It is also the best place to see what different ehtnicities look like mixed. I would say its a better place to live and raise a family and SoCal on the other hand is where you wanna vacation at (the girls there have two extremes, easy or bitch).

Los Angeles and the surrounding metro area is the absolute last place in the entire country I would want to live. It might be one of the bottom five big cities in the world.

i think the impression people outside of LA have of it is it's hollywood trash image. but there are some sweet spots in LA like down in the south bay, and up near malibu and further north/west. also, westwood and the surrounding areas are pretty sweet. ucla has the nicest campus that i've ever seen.

I think you just named every single one of the places I was envisioning at the start of this thread. For the record, I live in SoCal...born and raised. If you put a gun to my head, I would say Berkeley is probably my favorite part of the state. Santa Cruz a close second. Then again, if you put a gun to my head we'd likely be in Oakland.
It's sort of like "The Most Interesting Man In The World" and his take on beer, except with geography..... 'I don't usually like California. But when I do, I prefer the East Bay.'
