Baseball: OSU's Wimmers possibly out all weekend

The O-Zone is reporting that Alex Wimmers, OSU's ace, and Big Ten POTY candidate may be out for the rest of the weekend if not longer.

The really bad news was that pitching ace Alex Wimmers was unable to perform when he injured himself warming up for the game.

"He was warming up and he said he heard something pop in his hamstring," said OSU Head Coach Bob Todd.

[...]

"He was warming up, just stretching and moving around, and he heard something pop and it's a hamstring injury. It's a strain," said Todd.

"I'll give him credit, he tried to go out and warm up and pitch and it was just too painful. I've been doing this 38 years and I've never had a pitcher pull a hamstring warming up. This is the first in my life. It's freak. He was just stretching," Todd said.

"We're going to go back and evaluate, but it's slim and none," said Todd when asked if Wimmers could pitch yet this weekend against Michigan.

Hamstring pull could have him out weeks, and the article goes so far as to say the rest of the season. While this is good news for Michigan bats this weekend, you never want to see a player get injured. Wimmers is (was?) a near lock for a first round draft pick this summer. With the injury, that may drop him a little bit.

Wimmers’ status is currently undecided, according to the team. “He could be out 7 to 10 days or 2 to 3 weeks,” team spokesman Jerry Emig said in an e-mail. “We just don’t know yet.”
