2021 DE Quintin Somerville names M to top 8

Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro defensive end Quintin Somerville named Michigan to his top 8 a few days ago, along with New Mexico, Utah, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Florida State, Georgia, and Washington. I don't know that it was really reported here at MGoBlog, but Somerville is a big-time recruit. He's a 4-star, the #4 strongside end, and #70 overall. There's a crystal ball in for Oklahoma (note: not in his top 8), but right now Georgia and Michigan appear to be the leaders.

Michigan also offered 2021 Akron (OH) Hoban defensive end Darryl Peterson  (3-star, #399 overall) yesterday.

That's a weird seeming list for a bigtime recruit. He has a couple high quality schools (Michigan, Vanderbilt, UW) and a couple football $chool$ (Georgia and FSU) and then I guess it's geography based.

You'd expect to see Stanford on his list if Michigan is and you'd expect to see OSU and LSU on his list if Georgia is.

I'm glad Michigan is still making the Top X list for these elite recruits. At least the coaches are keeping in contact with the right people.

Currently in top lists for Jay Toia (#12DT, current USC commit who is second guessing because Helton was retained), Victory Vaka (#13DT), Rayshaun Benny (#16OT but Mich recruiting for DT which is the position he wants to play), Kelvin Gilliam (#5 WDE, but frame to grow either to SDE or all the way to DT).

In the mix for DTs George Rooks, Tyleik Williams, James Gillespie. Trying to get back in with Tywone Malone after losses of Partridge and Campanelli. Observing Pius Odjugo, giant In state DT who is super raw but athletic

Shaun Nua is doing a lot of work on the recruiting trail. If he can close on a couple of these targets, Michigan should be in great shape.

New Mexico?...It's all over. Seriously, that is a potpourri of schools, with almost no history from which to draw recruiting comparisons. Since UM lost Johnson, my hope has been that they would find another opening into Arizona. Demographics suggest there will be a lot of players coming out of there over the coming years and I still like UM's chances of competing with AU and ASU. Looks like FSU and GA (and OSU) all feel the same way.
