Success around the corner

To all the inpatient douchebags and doubters.... Rich Rod has won everywhere he has gone. He inherited walk on qb's, let alone ones that don't fit his system. The defense only appeared to suck as bad as they did because they spent 3/4 of the game on the field, often a short field after a turnover. We had numerous freshmen starters getting experience all year. We didn't catch a break all year...turnovers, kicking game, etc. Yes, some of this is coaching, some is inexperience, but also....some is just plain bad luck. As bad as it was, we easily could have been 6-6 by winning any 3 of these 4 winnable games (Utah, Toledo, NW, Purdue) All were close. With the experience from this year, and marginal improvements, (and we still play in the shitty Big Ten), we easily win 8 games next year. 3rd year = BCS year. Yes, this year sucked, and yes it was historically bad. But the circumstances relevant to this year (new coach, new system, bunch of talent gone to the NFL) are also historically unprecedented to this program. If you are one longing for more of the same...we probably could have gone 7-5 or 8-4 with Mallet at qb and Carr still coaching....as this team was not built for this year even in the old system. However, because the program was ready to progress into modern college football, we sacrificed a year of mediocrity for a year of crap. But I would argue that this was an extremely important year of crap....a big pile upon which the beautiful future of this program will be built. From motivation for the future to experience to expectation, this year was a necessary evil. Of course a 6-6 disappointment would have been much easier to swallow than 3-9, but to my point we really were close in a bunch of those games against the lesser teams on the schedule. Support the team and the coach as they deserve to be judged on more than one bad season. Next year will be much more enjoyable.

I can't wait until RichRod gets this thing turned around and in 30 years, instead of being the dark age of Michigan football, 2008 will be part of the "history" of the program. RichRod will invent some great quote or make the team do something outrageous in the offseason, and all the documentaries will talk about how it changed Michigan football for the better.

After this loss to OSU this horrible season is finally over. This season started out with optimism and a hunger for change that most fans were looking forward to. Finally a wide open spread offense that would get Michigan past the usual 8 win season, bleed fear into the hearts of all the Big Ten and dare I say the National Championship. Well none of that obviously happened, the season that started with such great hope ended in criticism and doubt for the future of Michigan football. It would be very easy to point the finger and criticize RR for all of the problems of this past season, but instead let’s give RR the benefit of the doubt and see if history repeats itself: 2008 Michigan / 2001 West Virginia Yards gained rushing 2104 / 1999 Rushing Attempts 453 / 474 Average per rush 3.9 / 4.2 TD rushing 17 / 16 Passing yards 1718 / 1811 TD’s Passing 11 / 9 As you can see the numbers are virtually identical to RR’s first year at West Virginia. I have not been able to find the plus/minus ratio but I am willing to bet that the numbers were better at West Virginia, but they only managed three wins as well. I hope this gives some of the negative fans insight and some hope for the 2009 season because if the numbers fall in line for RR’s second season we should see at least 9 wins. GO BLUE!
