Creating an NFL team using current Miichigan alum

Submitted by YakAttack on September 11th, 2023 at 7:35 PM

Let me start by saying that is all started while sitting on the toilet.  I consume as much online NFL/NCAA football content as they will allow me to. But I also buy preseason College Football and NFL magazines by the metric ton. Rainforests bedamned, I find myself randomly partaking in useless exercises based on their always outdated content. But recently, after a wife-induced late night Taco Bell order, I found myself pondering many things. Most will only be discussed with my therapist, but there is one that I found myself constantly coming back to. Like an old flame. Or, unironically, Taco Bell. What would happen if there were an NFL team, competing in 2023, comprised solely of Michigan players? What would the team look like? What Offensive and Defensive concepts would they run to best utilize the talent pool?

Caveats:

- I used ESPN.com rosters and depth charts as of 6PM, Monday 9/11/23

-I did not peruse practice squads. So if a player is listed as above, but is PS, they were eligible

-I used the players' designated position on ESPN.com as the default. As you'll see below(if you hate yourself enough to read that far,) liberties had to be taken to fill out a starting lineup. I defaulted to the players' position from college whenever possible.

-I stuck with players whose college was listed as Michigan per ESPN

-I wanted to coax players out of "retirement." But that seemed like a cop out.

-I went to EMU, so pardon my formatting.

Concepts based on personnel:

Offense: Uhh... Wing-T? Triple option?

Defense: Classic Ravens' 3-4.

STARTING LINEUPS

QB- Zach Gentry.

Hence the offense. Brady and Henne are retired. Ruuuuuuuudock and Shea are playing best-ball somewhere North of Gaylord. Gentry came to UM as a QB. Shut up, this is my excercise.

RB- Chris Evans

RB2- Hassan Haskins

FB- Bench Mason

Make the best of what you have.

WR1- Nico Collins

WR2- DPJ

WR 3- Ronnie Bell

Nico and DPJ can, maybe, possibly, go up and get the 12 passing attempts a game? Bell is a great downfield blocker.

TE1- L. Schoonmaker

TE2- Sean McKeon

Blockytypes that can leak out as safety valves when needed.

LT- M. Cole

LG- B. Bredeson

C- C. Ruiz

RG- M. Onwenu

RT- R. Hayes

This was the first position group I struggled with. Mason Cole was recruited as a center in the ilk of Ruiz. But he performed well in college as a true freshman LT when forced. RT came down to Jalen Mayfields' noted NFL struggles vs Hayes' ability to stick at tackle. Runyon and G. Glasgow were also considered to form an OL. And OLU is the first player I want on my practice squad.

DEFENSE-MAKE TRADES. The Edge positions are overabundant. Trade Uche for a Minshew-type  and a 1/2 round pick

DE- Hutch

DT- Mazi

DE- Gary

Stout against the run/pass rush upside.

OLB- Ojabo

MLB- D. Bush

MLB- J. Ross (taken out on passing downs)

OLB- K. Paye

Good luck, QBs.

CB1- DJ Turner

CB2- Ambry Thomas

Nickel CB- Jourdan Lewis

FS- Dax Hill

SS- J. Peppers

I'd bet 90 percent of NFL D-Coordinators would take that starting D. And the depth is ridiculous.

K- Moody

P- Robbins

LS- Cheeseman

Depth- Guys not mentioned above:

A. Steuber

Frank Clark

Chase Winovich

Danna

(not the RT} Hinton

Wormley

Mike Morris

Brandon Graham (Captain)

Mo Hurst

Cam McGrone

Khaleke Tha Freak

Dave Long. Jr

So have at it. Tell me how wrong I am/who I missed.

Random Notes: I was shocked at the amount of players from Western and Eastern Michigan on active rosters. Michigan State too, but that is less shocking.

That defense would be pretty nasty but, man, that offense...woof. This is basically the NFL version of Iowa.

(NOTE: I should point out that I don't actually follow the NFL, so I may actually be wrong about the defense as well. I just know they were great players at UM.)

With the offense, I assume he wanted to coax Brady out of retirement. I would too with Gentry as the best option. In the alternative, maybe expand criteria to "professional football" and grab Rudock. The offensive options aren't terrible if you have a quarterback who actually quarterbacks.

You're pretty much right about the defense. We don't have any shutdown CBs, but the line is QB nightmare fuel and the OLBs are also excellent. Given the lack of talent at ILB, though, I'd probably just run Bush out there and try to find a combination of OLBs with some pass defense savvy.

What if they constantly play 5 lineman and 5 DBs with Devin at MLB?  They have the personnel to do it.  Khaleke and Peppers are basically small LBs who can cover.  Also Dax can slide into Nickel occasionally.  This defense can get weird and interesting!

Five D-lineman: Hutch, Mazi, Gary, Danna, Ojabo with Hutch sliding inside for Mazi on passing downs and replacing him with Uche.

One LB: Devin Bush obviously.

Five DBs: DJ and Ambry at outside corner, Dax, Peppers and Khaleke at Safety with Dax and Khaleke rolling down to nickel as needed.  You could put Jourdan Lewis at nickel too and remove Khaleke.  I'd be fine with either option.

Two suggestions at QB:

  1. Former Harbaugh protege Josh Johnson (currently Lamar Jackson's back-up)
  2. Take my energy options that recent Harbaugh teams have beaten, like Sean Clifford or Aidan O'Connell

Either seems as fair as moving Gentry to QB. Alternatively, stick Haskins back there and wildcat it.

There are so few WR that we can point to but you missed Dalen Baldwin who is on the Browns IR, Luiji Vilain who is on the Vikings Practice squad, and Lavert Hill Steelers,

The issue with your starting defense is Gary & Hutch aren’t DEs in a 3-4 defense, they’re OLBs. Not sure about Mazi at NT in a 3-4 because he’s never played it before. And then your OLBs aren’t great in pass coverage but just okay in the run game while Bush is a replacement level NFL ILB. I don’t see that front 7 holding up against the run game. Neither of your CBs are CB1 or CB2 on the team they’re on. 90% of NFL coordinators aren’t taking this defense unless they have maize colored glasses on.

I'd probably move Ruiz to LG and put Olu at C.  Most powerful interior OL in the NFL with Onwenu.

Once JJ goes pro, this team jumps to Super Bowl contenders.  Right now they struggle to get to 9 wins with that QB.

So, I can report that Jake Rudock is presently attending UM Med School, per a friend of mine who teaches there and raves about him. But if he just needs to beat out Zach Gentry for a starting NFL gig, well, UMMS isn't going anywhere.
