this week in unintentionally grim-sounding recruiting headlines
Amanda Chidester exploded last year. She was an All-American selection. This year she is on the "Watch List" along with teammates Ashley Lane and Bree Evans. However, Chiddy has started a little slow during the first two games but she made up for all of that tonight.
Chiddy hit a walk-off HR to lead us to a 5-4 victory. She went 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs. This is almost mid-season form for her. I am so happy for her. Ashley Lane went 2 for 3 tonight as well.
Stephanie Spiereman was in the circle tonight and Caitlan Blanchard was her battery mate. Stephanie gave up 3 runs (2 ER) off 5 hits, 3 BB and 1K in 4.2 innings of work. Strike outs are not Stephanie's strong point. She is more of a low ball pitcher that gets hitters to ground out instead of over-powering hitters.
Haylie Wagner came in to calm things down as Stephanie got into a jam in the 5th inning. Haylie gave up 1 ER on 1 hit, 2 BB and 2K in 2.1 innings of work.
It is good to see Coach mix things up a little. The outfield is set with Bree sandwiched between Lindsay and Colie. These three also are at the top of the order with 1, 2 ,3 being Bree, Lindsay and Colie. I would not expect Coach to tinker much with this.
The real question is what to do at 1st base. We have so many options with Taylor and Mandy both capable of doing a good job. Then that leaves Ashley as DP. This is a good situation to have but it will take a few more games to settle in. Typically it takes about 8-10 games to get everything situated.
We finish up tomorrow in a non-league game against Penn State, who lost to La Tech and LSU thus far.
Congrats ladies on a 3-0 record. Dont worry about the close scores thus far, Coach is just tryint to figure out WHO we are first.
The Michigan softball team won today by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 3-2. The Hawkeyes had dominated the Wolverine hitters all day. Iowa took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning. The game-time temperature was 65 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.
In the 7th inning, Michigan pulled together and the walk off hit was delivered by Alycia Ryan with a bases loaded hit off the RF wall with the game tied and bases loaded to score Taylor Hasselbach (who was running for Dorian Shaw).
Stephanie Speierman was the starting pitcher but her struggles continues. She had control problems yesterday and they continued into today. She pitched 4 innings giving up 1 ER off 3 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 4. Hilary Payne pitched the final 3 innings to get the win. Hilary gave up 1 ER off 1 hit and gave up 2 walks and 0 strikeouts.
This was a very exciting walk off win for the girls. They played flat all day. It appeared that yesterday's loss was being carried over by the offense today. Hutch made some lineup changes by moving Dorian Shaw down to the #7 slot and moving Alycia Ryan up to the #3 slot.
The only information I could find out about JT is that she has a day-to-day rotator cuff injury. No date has been reported by Hutch as to a return date.
We travel to Wisconsin next weekend for 2 games before coming home for a May 3rd single game against EMU and May 4th DH against tosu.
UPDATE: #2 ASU swept Zona, #3 Alabama lost to Florida Saturday, #4 Georgia lost to Arkansas, #5 Tennessee lost to Mississippi St. So we should drop only to #2 possibly #3 in the poll this week.
JT is out indefinately with a rotator cuff injury. No return date has been announced by Hutched yet. The injury occured during practice 19APR11.
The Michigan softball team lost today against Iowa at Alumni Field. The score was 4-2 . This puts the team's overall record at 41-4. Game-time temperature was 71 degrees with the wind out of the north at 2 kts.
This is only the 2nd Big Ten loss, and we are now tied with Indiana atop the Big 10 standings. Stephanie Speierman was on the rubber today. This was probably her worst game of the season. She struggled in just about every inning. She gave up 3ER off 9 hits, stuck out 6 and walked 2. She also gave up one tater.
The offense didnt help her out much by leaving the bases loaded in 2 innings. The only bright spot in the line up was Nicole Sappingfield. She went 2 for 3 with the only 2 RBIs that we could muster.
Hutch did something very interesting in the 5th inning. Stephanie worked herself into a jam with bases loaded and no outs. Hutch calmly walked out to the mound and told her that she trusted her and for her to pitch her way. The next batter looped one out into LF for an RBI. Hutch still kept Stephanie in. Stephanie settled down and struck out 2 to shut down the Hawkeyes. This takes balls even from vetern coach.
This will probably drop us a few spots in the national polls but we are still good to host a regional in May.
#1 Michigan SB swept PSU by duplicate 5-4 games. Our record is now 41-3.
In the first game, Jordan Taylor gave up 3 ER on 7 hits and dishing out 8 strikeouts and no walks. She did give up 1 bomb. She finished the game,
Amanda Chidester went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored with a HR, Bree Evans came up clutch, going 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and a run scored. Colie Sappingfield also was 2 for 4 with a run scored,
In the nightcap, Stephanie Speierman was on the rubber for the win. She pitched 5 innings and gave up 2 ER while racking up 8 K and only 1 BB. JT finished the final 2 innings. She gave up 2 ER on 2 hits while garnering 2 Ks and 0 BB. She gave up another bomb in the second game as well.
Amanda Chidester was the game 2 hero as well. She went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Bree Evans went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and a run scored.
The game was televised on the BTN, Dan Kelly was the play by play announcer. We host Iowa this Sat and Sun.
The #2 Michigan Softball team won the second game of two critical contests today against Illinois at Urbana. The score of the second game was 9-7.
Michigan should be the #1 team in the nation with these two wins today. The #1 team, Arizona State lost on Friday so that should be enough to leap frog the Devils. #3 Texas also lost so there is no chance for the Longhorns to leap frog us. So the top 3 should be #1 Michigan, #2 Georgia, #3 Alabama or ASU. This depends on how far ASU falls in the polls.
Michigan was led by Senior Alycia Ryan. Alycia went 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored (3 run HR in the first). Ashley Lane went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Bree Evans went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.
The pitching woes continued into the second game today for Stephanie Speierman. She started the game but was roughed up in the 1st. She faced three batters, gave up 2 ER and recorded only 1 out and 1 BB. Hilary Payne came in to relieve her. She pitched 4.1 innings, giving up 3 ER (2 HR) on 7 hits. She also had zero Ks and zero BB. JT came in to pitch the final 2 innings to record the save; she gave up only 1 hit, a HR in the bottom of the 7th. JT also recorded a strikeout and 0 walks.
The #2 Michigan Softball team spanked Western Michigan today at Alumni Field 6-1. It pushed our record to 36-3. Game time temperature was 56 degrees under sunny skies with a slight north wind. Hutch had the girls in the road unis today.
The game could have been ugly early but Hutch put the brakes on. She made changes early to allow the reserves players some reps.
Colie Sappingfield went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Ashley Lane was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Bree Evans went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.
Stephanie Speierman was given the ball today and gave up 1 unearned run while surrendering 1 walk along with 2 Ks and 4 hits. She went 5 complete. Hilary Payne continued to administer the pain as she was brought in to pitch in releif and picked up the save. Payne pitched the final 2 innings. Payne gave up no runs, 1 hit and recorded 3 Ks with no BBs.
We play Central Michigan University tomorrow at Alumni Field at 6pm.
