2012 Depth Chart

I know, I know...it's waaaay to early. How could I possibly know? How could I possibly predict redshirts for kids who are in high school? "Oh wonderful, guess we don't need spring, summer and fall to figure out the depth chart!" ...and so on, and so forth.
But it's a message board. It's for fun. For the occasional prediction or daydream. So for those getting all huffy...breathe, I'm a fan focused on this year just like you. This is purely information (or speculation) to build on for the future.

FB & Slot - Notice these positions are in italics. I realize you can't have 12 players on the field at once. This is my way of recognizing that. (Personally, I believe Shotgun, 3 WR, 2 RB will be our primary set along with the Pro Set formation.)

Fitz: 2012 Heisman candidate?

Admittedly, I don’t usually care for Michael Rothstein’s writing, but he throws out the opportunity that Fitz could be a Heisman candidate as early as next year, which I like.  Fitz ran for 1000+ yards in basically 10 games so far.  DNP against ND and only two carries against MSU.  He is obviously the feature back and it looks like he could consistently see 20-25 carries per game next year.  If he averages, say 22.5 carries per game at this year’s YPC (5.8), he would end up with 1696 yards (13 games).

I have never thought of Fitz being THAT good, but he was seriously impressive from Purdue through the end of season.  Here are some recent Heisman contender/winner RB stats:

2011 T Richardson: 1583 yards/20 TD/6.0 YPC

2011 M Ball: 1759 yards/32 TD/ 6.4 YPC

2010 L James: 1731 yards/21 TD/5.9 YPC

2009 M Ingram: 1658 yards/17 TD/6.1 YPC

2009 T Gerhart: 1871 yards/27 TD/5.5 YDC

My first thought was that it might be more realistic for Fitz’s senior year when Denard isn’t there to take away carries and yards.  But, DRob may be part of the reason Fitz is cashing in.  Regardless, we currently have a potential GREAT back at Michigan.

More than halfway through the year, thought it might be a good idea to see how next year's matchups will stack up.  All info comes from Rivals...I throw in some minimal commentary, but thought others might find this interesting.

Umich returns 8.5 on offense (loses FB and swaps Stonum for Hemmingway, loses Koger and Molk).  Returns 8.5 on D depending on how you view Heinenger.

Sparty returns 6.5  on offense with all the loses huge (QB, WR1/2, best O lineman and .5 for Fullback)  They return 9 on Defense and that assumes Worthy heads to NFL.

OSU returns 8 on offense with all 3 loses on the O-Line.  They retrurn 10 on D with LB Sweat hitting the road.

Nebraska returns 9 on offense (only losing 2 lineman) and 9 on D (Crick is not counted since as of today he is done playing in college)

ND returns 7 on O (lose Floyd + 3 starting O lineman and 2 of their top 5 lineman backups) and 5 on D (I show Lynch as a starter and rivals has him as a backup)

Alabama returns 6 on offense (I assume T. Rich is gone) and 5 on D (the D starts 6 seniors and 5 juniors and I assume one Junior goes Pro - will possibly be 2 or 3).

Summary of returning players out of 22:

Umich: 17/22 or 77%

Sparty:15.5/22 or 70%

OSU:18/22 or 82%

Nebraska: 18/22 or 82%

Notre Dame: 12/22 or 55%

Alabama: 11/22 or 50%

Again my disclaimer: data is only as good as Rivals depth chart data.

Summary:  Sparty's D will be very good again next year.  Notre Dame loses a lot and so does Alabama, but Alabama has All Big Ten caliber talent on their bench.

With that said...my '12-'13 Depth Chart!

* - I don't think Kalis will redshirt. I think he'll play OT his freshman year before moving inside to LG for the remainder of his career
** - I don't think Pipkins will redshirt. I think he'll play DT his freshman year before moving to NG for the remainder of his career.
FB & Slot - Notice these positions are in italics. I realize you can't have 12 players on the field at once. This is my way of recognizing that.
