These changes have inspired me to take a MGobreak until the week before Notre Dame. Who knows? I may even get off my cell phone and speak to others?

Coincidence?

06/02/2018 - 12:58pm not mentioned yet, best female singers I have seen live

The greats are great live. I love all types of music, rap to classical, but still come back to the popular classics.

An older Ella Fitzgerald still was on a different plant talent wise at Hill Auditorium in 1979.

Diana Ross returning to the Fox Theater, blocks from Cass Tech in a very emotional performance.

Barbara Streisand. Again past her prime but her voice was like buttah. Love this clip with Judy Garland (another legend, tragic). There is reallygood and then great.

05/30/2018 - 10:55pm I'm On top of the world

Everything I want the world to be
Is now coming true especially for me
And the reason is clear
It's because you are here
You're the nearest thing to a lineman that I've seen

05/29/2018 - 3:06pm Bob Harrison

Two time captain at UM. Won NBA titles as a teammate of George Mikan on the MInneapolis Lakers. He won the first NBA finals game on a last second half court shot. Was a very good NBA player, later coached Harvard and is still alive. Stunned I have not heard of him at all. Also scored 139 points in an 8th grade game which is some sort of record, lol.

Sounds like an interview for John U Bacon or Brian. This is all I can find about his personal story. Would love to know about his struggles as a Native American athlete.

05/29/2018 - 2:09pm Rob Pelinka and complete list from 2016

was first UM player to be in three Final Fours, and Laker GM, was an agent for Kobe, Iguodala, and many others, had to have won at least a 4 % bonus of some NBA championship money.

Here is the list of players from two years ago by school.

05/26/2018 - 5:02pm Did he make himself bigger?

Did he intend to block the ball?

Was it an unnatural arm position?

Could he avoid being hit , enough time to react?

These are some of the questions refs ask when making a call/ no call. I’d say no to all of them and proper call by the CR who was in proper position to make the call.

05/26/2018 - 4:34pm Karius to start at the Big House

05/26/2018 - 4:21pm Why?

No call

05/26/2018 - 4:21pm Robertson and the D have been excellent

Neither goal was their fault. Stopped many good chances.

Benzema is offside a lot too

05/26/2018 - 4:09pm Oh my fuckin God

Never see a sweeter goal

05/26/2018 - 4:04pm Game on!

Now the matador dances with blind shoemaker..

05/26/2018 - 3:58pm Ronaldo was off true..

but that has nothing to do with being Benzema offside on the next play which is what the AR called. Looked like Benzema was ahead of Ronaldo's header and then the keeper blocked it (no possession) and then and..

holy shit did that just happen?

05/14/2018 - 6:27pm Germany v Mexico World Cup June 17th

This board is great for suggestions!

Traveling to a soccer mad country during the World Cup can be an unforgetable experience, especially if you know a little bit about the home side. Massive public gatherings involving beer to watch these games is an experience. Hopefully your visit is on the 17th or after.

Google German soccer chants and national team and you will quickly be embraced in Bavaria.

05/14/2018 - 4:50pm yup and throw in the Common App effect

which has screwed up all the "statistics" and everything makes sense from the numbers standpoint.

And all HS GPA's are not created equally.

05/14/2018 - 2:47pm It's brutal.. and not about GPA

Things to help his chances:

..he should start working on the application essays and recommendations now (questions don't change much) and have them reviewed by teachers. Make them well written, unique, interesting, etc. The first pass for early admit may only take a couple minutes to stand out and be a go/ defer/ no go.

...show passion for what you want to study (ie robotics, math competitions, clubs etc for an Engineer) for UM, and why studying in A2 would be a unique experience.

...show leadership, growth as person in extracurriculars. Good GPAs and test scores are dime a dozen. Selective schools want passionate students who will add value to the campus in and out of the classroom.

...take campus tours now and make sure you are registered. UM camps are also a good connection. Reach out to a prof in the field of study. Make UM connections now mention in essays.

Best of luck to him and hopefully he will have a good Christmas present.

05/14/2018 - 2:21pm Of course experiences do vary

I was going by the standard university tours (not mail) which we attended the past four years.

In a nutshell the UM engineering and B schools tours were very good. The standard group tours (have taken 3 at UM) were too much " it's really hard to get in here". I am comparing these tours to other top school tours we took (Stanford, Northwestern, UCLA, Chicago.).

At any school it's great to be proactive and reach out early.  MSU has a green carpet day for their top propects/applicants. Call admissions and ask them about this or whatever they call in now. It was a well organized day hosted by top faculty who emphasize "we want you, what's it going to take to get you here". There is also testing where you can figure out how much money you will get. Also you can pretty much be guaranteed a spot in honor dorms, not  maybe you will be on North Campus, maybe not. I'm no Sparty fan but came away impressed with their recruiting efforts.

Good luck to your son.

05/14/2018 - 10:32am My daughter was in the same situation

She applied to MSU as a fall back school. MSU rolled out the red carpet, actually was invited to a nice green carpet day, accepted her early, and to the Lyman Briggs dorm, got $ etc. and I was  thinking at the time this would be a great place for her. They were very welcoming and honestly for the first year of LSA it doesn't make that much difference.

She did get accepted into UM and is happy there now, but the process while friendly was sterile and at times elitist. Totally get why some borderline UM applicants apply to other schools.

05/14/2018 - 10:16am What other parameters did this university try to control?

Trying to artificially control sex or race at "perfect levels" makes no sense in the long run at a top tier university.

05/11/2018 - 6:50pm Austin always makes me realize

that my problems are not very serious. So glad he found a great gal too.

05/10/2018 - 7:46pm Engler speaks the truth!

05/10/2018 - 4:17pm Muransky/ Paris.. great Bo story

Before their NFL careers, Bubba Paris and Ed Muransky roamed A2 like dinosaurs and were gigantic compared to other football linemen, let alone non athletes.  The pair were each about 6'7" and around 300 pounds. Ed picked up Bo after the 1981 Rose Bowl victory like he was a twig. This 14 year old is bigger than both of them!

Great story from Wikipedia: Muransky also set the all-time "Beef Bowl" record by consuming 8 pounds (3.63 kg)[6] of prime rib at Lawry's before the 1979 Rose Bowl. Muransky later recalled: "Bubba Paris and I were two happy freshmen eating together at the Lawry's Beef Bowl event before the 1979 Rose Bowl Game. After we had enjoyed our fourth plate of prime rib, mashed potatoes, corn and Yorkshire pudding, Bubba asked what the record was, and they said 7 cuts. Bubba continued for 3 more cuts, and I continued for four, totally under the Bo Schembechler radar screen. When they delivered the 8th cut to me, the media started to gather around my table, Bo walked by and let me know what he was thinking without ever saying a word. Afterward, a Paris-Muransky night out ended with some pizza. The next morning in practice, Bo made an example of Bubba and me. We never ran so much in our lives as we did that day. We were in every play of scrimmage and then we ran sprints."[7] When the Wolverines returned to Pasadena for the 1981 Rose Bowl, "Bo made it a point to come to the back of the plane and talk to me and Bubba Paris. He wanted to let us know that my record from a couple years earlier would not be in jeopardy because we were going to be sitting with him at the Lawry's Beef Bowl. He said he was going to limit each of us to two cuts of prime rib."[7]

Schembechler had his own take on the story: "I let 'em eat because they were freshmen. They weren't gonna play anyway.

05/06/2018 - 1:18pm Kenny "the Rat" Linseman and Bryan "Bugsy" Watson

Old time Flyers hockey.

Great nicknames that fit. Bugsy also played for the Wings and seemed to destined for 250- 300 PIMs per season.

Sean Avery and Claude Lemiuex are right there too.

05/04/2018 - 10:15pm Must be his mom's genes

I guess my point was it's really up to the kid to recognize the school environment where they will thrive and the "right place" for two siblings who are both uniquely talented was two totally different schools.

UC would be the right place for many kids as would a Ross BBA. Without knowing the kid this is really a silly discussion.

Acceptance rates and famous alums don't mean much if a student isn't motivated/passionate about something at least by the time they are a upperclassman.

05/04/2018 - 7:17pm Totally depends on his culture/personality

Both are very good schools but it's really up to him to make the best of it and take advantage of what the campus offers and how it fits his personality. Sort of like football recruiting...

BBA degrees are nice but grad school is what really counts. If your kid is Stephen Jobs or some brilliant talent, they should drop out in a year or two anyway.

My D is into watching Big10 sports, and social scene, studying various disciplines tand is totally happy at UM undergrad

My S wanted to play D3 sports, wanted a small school environment, STEM focused, and is tired of Michigan winters... so CalTech was the right place for him.

Congrats and good luck wherever he goes.

05/02/2018 - 3:52pm Justin Verlander <s> is overrated and washed up

Yesterday 8 scoreless innings vrs the Yankees..no walks, 3 hits and 14 Ks!

05/02/2018 - 3:45pm Good call.

You took my guy. +1 for you Sam.

05/02/2018 - 1:29pm Isn't Gavin Belson an alum?

05/02/2018 - 1:27pm Who needs a degree if you are a skilled tech entrepreneur?

"Kotick began his career in 1983 while he was still in college at the University of Michigan,[ when he began creating software for the Apple II with financial backing from Steve Wynn. Kotick credits Steve Jobs for advising him to drop out of college to pursue his entrepreneurial interests in the software business."
