Thank you, Coach, for the great coaching, for the great teaching, and for running a clean — and respectful — program. Also, thanks to this early summer kerfuffle, for the reminder how much we value all that, and you.

05/25/2018 - 2:30pm sleep

Best practical advice we got: don't whisper when your babies are asleep, or they'lll learn to only sleep when it's quiet. Despite the constant sitcom/movie jokes that anything above a whisper wakes babies, if you talk at a normal volume, that's the noise level they'll learn to sleep at.

Best hindsight: don't be determined to be right.

05/21/2018 - 9:36am who wears short shorts

I'm a little late to the party but has no one mentioned his shorts? He's perfect for Michigan.

05/18/2018 - 5:04pm NYT Times' mistake anticipated

4 months ago, I got negged for pointing out this mistake was a possibility. I wrote:

This scandal is going to hurt the University of Michigan too, because outside the Midwest, many people aren't clear which is "MIchigan" and which is Michigan State. I've encountered that nearly everywhere I've lived — Oregon, Kentucky, Georgia, Pennsylvania, California, Montana, New York. The confusion is especially true in the Northeast, where a friend sent me an email about "Michigan University."

04/25/2018 - 12:25pm Olympic: fire AND rain

Oh, yeah, the Olympic. Fought a fire there at the same time it was raining on us. Miserable.

04/25/2018 - 12:05pm Crater / Glacier (& Yellowstone / Carlsbad)

Crater Lake b/c fighting forest fires for the Forest Service, we were stationed on the Umpqua National Forest just outside Crater, which had the nearest women and booze.

Glacier National Park, same reason: when I was on a different fire crew on the Flathead N.F.,Glacier had the nearest women and booze.

Yellowstone and Carlsbad get honorable mention because they were two of my most interesting fires.

04/04/2018 - 4:21pm Rahk & roll

Ain't it great to have so so so many choices from the season, each one better than the next one in a grand roundelay of Rahk & roll!

04/04/2018 - 11:20am Thank you

You captured what a glorious and painful and wonderful ride we've been on.

04/03/2018 - 7:56am Because, MGoBlog

Thank you, Seth. This is beautiful. It, and other pieces by the MGoBrainTrust (MGoBrianTrust?), are why I revel in MGoBlog.

04/02/2018 - 2:44pm Philly left

I first encountered the premature left turn when I was in the Army and driving in Philadelphia, so I always called it a Philly left. That's also when I learned a Philly cheese steak is not steak.

04/01/2018 - 11:40am Congratulations!

Congratulations to your son. He's done a wonderful job.

Go Blue! Go son!

04/01/2018 - 9:37am Great coach. Great teacher

As a coach, Beilein is a model for what teachers should do.

03/31/2018 - 11:44pm long, happy night

Out tonight, I taped both the national and Michigan broadcasts. Now near midnight I'm settling in to watch. May watch both.

03/30/2018 - 6:07pm respect for Loyola

To be clear, when I posted the NY Times op-ed, I meant no disrespect to Loyola-Chicago. I teach at a Catholic school myself, and believe we provide a good education. I believe Loyola-Chicago does too. I also believe they've got a good team.

I posted because Michigan is implicitly included among the "big-money" schools, where players "become in-house professional athletes, without the paychecks, but often with plenty of valuable perks. Their training, practice and game schedules leave little time for class, let alone studying. Many don’t get diplomas, which they’ll need because the majority of them won’t play pro."

A problem in higher education? Absolutely. Sometimes a problem at Michigan? Maybe. Sometimes a problem at Loyola? Enough of a chance that he probably shouldn't be throwing shade, even if he covers his ass by not naming names.

And now, like Ace, I will curl into my own ball of anticipation.

03/30/2018 - 2:01pm "intellectualy dishonest"?

Replying to criticisms on the web is often an invitation to negging. For instance, my post gets negged while a reply that repeats my point gets voted up. Nor am I trashing Loyola.

Mostly, I object to a characterization of my post as "dishonest," intellectually or otherwise. I've reread the op-ed piece, considered your point, and still believe my post, as Vinnie says, holds water.

The op-ed writer explicitly cites Loyola as the positive half of his argument, and implicitly tosses Michigan into the category of "big-money" schools. While it's technically accurate that Michigan is a big-money school, and he didn't Michigan directly, the gist of his piece contrasts a Loyola education against its next opponent.

03/28/2018 - 12:51pm Thank you x 2

Thank you. I appreciate the tip about the free articles for two reasons.

First, The Athletic clearly has better resources, so their writers are able to go into depth in a way that regular beat writers don't have the time or money to do. The site has the money to send Quinn to Milwaukee for a story on Poole. Quinn captured many details that I'd never read in years of following the team and Coach Beilein.

Thanks too for directing us to the site, so I could discover that Quinn has improved. He used to employ big words or try to get poetic, in a way that made lots of people consider him smart. But it wasn't smart. His big words were often misused and his attempts at poetry were less about making the subject of an article clearer than about him showing off. Now that excess has been trimmed in the articles I read. Now he's writing well, not just fancy.

03/25/2018 - 2:59pm State of Michigan basketball addition

Michigan Staee: runner-up conference tournament / national tournament. Losing them to Blue and Orange makes them green with envy

Also runner-up in floor slapping (lost to Duke AGAIN)

03/25/2018 - 1:27am smile smile smile

Such a great run! Smiling a lot, happy to be a Wolverine, proud of our team and our coach & coaches. Worried midseason if the team would come together and now... What a ride!

03/24/2018 - 1:00pm Moe McGary

Mitch McGary's college career was cut short by the evil cannabis (hunters), and that was a shame, for his sake and for ours, losing the opportunity to enjoy a big man's uninhibited joy playing this glorious sport.

Then it struck me: we're lucky enough to get that joyous spirit in a big man again. Few fan bases get it once but we get it  a second time, in Moe Wagner and his gesamtkunstwerk. [German, n., total work of art, concept attributed to Richard Wagner]

03/23/2018 - 1:33pm The University of Michigan

Happy to be rooting for a coach and team we can be proud of.

Proud to be part of a university that has teams that make us happy.

03/22/2018 - 11:56pm happy

Sooooooooooo happy

03/19/2018 - 7:41am Michigan excellence

Thank you, Katelynn. It's great / to be / a Michigan / Wolverine, and to see a Michigan Wolverine excel.

03/17/2018 - 6:27pm floor slap happy

His teams lead the country in floor slapping = more determined = best teams, right?

03/16/2018 - 11:24pm Houston, we have ...

Houston, please have a problem.

03/07/2018 - 9:25am Painter as opponent

Painter seems a refreshing change from the screaming coaches who make excuses and throw their players under the bus. Savvy, intense, but respectul. Do I have that right?

03/05/2018 - 12:35pm MSU: Michigan Slapping-The-Floor University

If slapping the floor proves you're tough and determined, does that mean we should ship the trophy up to East Lansing — cuz they're WAY better than Michigan at doing that.

(My internet's been out so I may have missed someone else making this observation.)

02/21/2018 - 3:45pm lays on the couch?

"where my spirit lays on the couch all day in sweats"

Normally I'd agree with Evenyoubrutus, that it should be "spirit lies on the count all day." However, we could consider the possibility that spirit is not alone but sharing the couch with someone, in which case the spirit MIGHT be laying.

02/20/2018 - 4:29pm Loserville

Louisville's president's comment: “I cannot say this strongly enough: We believe the N.C.A.A. is simply wrong.”

And WE cannot say this strongly enough: the ref was simply wrong.

02/17/2018 - 1:54pm Inflamable flame war?

Great posting.

The comment is sarcastic. Like the article.

02/01/2018 - 6:26pm Short Cuts

This movie by the great director Robert Altman — whose papers are now in the Michigan archives — had me unsettled for days.

01/26/2018 - 3:57pm "Michigan University"

This scandal is going to hurt the University of Michigan too, because outside the Midwest, many people aren't clear which is "MIchigan" and which is Michigan State. I've encountered that nearly everywhere I've lived — Oregon, Kentucky, Georgia, Pennsylvania, California, Montana, New York. The confusion is especially true in the Northeast, where a friend sent me an email about "Michigan University."

My apologies if someone's posted this point.

01/20/2018 - 7:28am 2 points on the NY Times coverage

First, as others have pointed out, this is a NEWS article, reporting on calls for Simon's resignation, and is not a NY Times opinion. Unlike much of the web, newspapers distinguish between articles reporting on facts and context of events; 2) editorials representing the opinion of editors; and 3) opinion pieces, like editorials expressing individual writers' opinions.

Perhaps more interesting, the Times coverage mostly ignores Michigan State. The linked article is an adjunct to the main article, which focuses on charges against USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee. This main article only mentions Michigan State once, in a brief paragraph toward the end.

01/02/2018 - 5:14pm Thanks, Brian

That's all. Just thanks.

01/01/2018 - 8:42am You've got ...

... another think coming.

11/27/2017 - 2:09pm existential crisis averted

Thank you, Brian.

When I first encountered MGoBlog, I considered it a bright beacon in blogland.  Naively, I continued to believe that, despite the growing feeling that my experience was turning sour.

Why did people not recognize these are young men, students, contributing to Michigan? What was I missing? In Comments, downvoting seemed to have less to do with teh substance of what anyone said than immature ego wanting attention. Was it me, unable to handle the rough-and-tumble internets? Was it trolls?

It was trolls, and I'm glad you're dealing with the problem.
