slight hijack - books to be read as a family, which all our kids enjoy, even the 20 yr old and the teenagers

1.  we are starting read the narnia books.

2.  the historical fiction novels of g.a. henty.  lots of real history wrapped around fictional characters and the stories stretch from medieval times to westerns and everything in between.  good heroes, adventure stuff.

as for me, systematic theology by louis berkhoff.

to follow your analogy for the new house, i feel its more like the plumber put the one toilet in the garage and the electrician forgot to wire switches for a lot of the lights, and the framers decided not to put too many windows in the place.

not afraid of change and i like new houses, but this one wasn't ready for its certificate of occupancy....

much like 'points' in general, i think the OP up/down votes serve as a subtle but effective way for us to pick our topics with at least a modicum of care.  it was also the one area where you knew who and how they had voted, no hiding behind anonymity.  lastly, knowing and seeing those totals was an important part of some of the most entertaining or most worthwhile OP's.  i mean, somebody gets on a roll one way or the other with those and it can be fun, or affirming (on deeper topics), or properly corrective.

Syd, i have seen you and a few others mention this.  can you do a copy/paste of what that might look like?  i can't picture it and maybe it would be a crowd favorite if others got to see it.

06/08/2018 - 3:31pm with huge congrats to ben…

with huge congrats to ben flanagan, there is one more great michigan grad/ontario runner that you guys are forgetting:  chris brewster.   captain of the michigan cross-country and track teams, great guy, and one heck of a runner.  watched him win the B10 mile in AA 34 (?) years ago with a kick that started an easy 200 yds from the leaders.  he ran them down in that old, small 1/8th mile indoor track.  a thing of beauty.

but again, an NCAA champion in ben flanagan, go blue.

06/08/2018 - 8:38am Yes, same here.

Yes, same here.

No tracking, no editing, a 'net' score on up/down votes as opposed as opposed to a detailed score, not just 'different', but seemingly more difficult to navigate and find things.

end result:  neg bang please for being a Debbie downer....

Guessing a significant drop off in traffic.   The weird thing is that on Tuesday night I signed in and got the new site. The next day, not, and I figured they had some stumble in the new platform and would get back at it.

Oh well, different, not better, but I figure there's a learning curve and I'll like it eventually.

A.  thanks to robf i am able to find this site now. i was getting that old picture of the fab 5 the last 3 days and thinking the blog-world had ended.

b.  you have apparently served whatever purgatory you were sentenced to, and are back in the saddle putin.  good.

c.  i really am pulling for the caps.  ovi has paid his dues and they are  have been a historically collapsing team in the cup playoffs.  good for them,  go caps.

couldnt even find the site for days.  Only found it because I swapped some texts with robf (thanks rob).  Id be curious if there has been a substantial change in traffic.

what's not to like?

05/30/2018 - 9:41pm Faux Mo to the Pistons

you heard it here first.  he's going to grab opposing players and 'disappear' them into a sewer.  after just a game or two no opposing teams will show up.  the pistons win all games by forfeit, on their way to the championship.  such a simple solution, why hadn't we thought of it before?

05/30/2018 - 9:38pm Hello Stephen

i'm late on this too, just home from work and with a minute to type.  answers:

no financial yield per se, but last time i figured it, the cost per gallon to produce was ~ .40 cents.

i get 5 and 8 gallon jugs of used oil from friends who have or run restaurants. i probably have a 2-3 hundred gallons in reserve, but can get more if i start asking for it.

bio diesel is a better fuel than dino-diesel for mileage, i'd say a 10% improvement.  virtually pollutant free and it actually smells nice when burned.   the reason for the better mileage is the greater lubricity of the fuel vs. the ultra low sulpher diesel they sell now.

there are two important caveats to that though.  first, when its really cold like in duluth or NW lower michigan, the gel point of bio diesel isn't low enough, so you can't use 100% of it but must mix it with dino-diesel. i have experimented with various mixtures that say they lower the gel point, but at least as of a few years ago i'd found nothing that makes a huge difference.  the second caveat is that the new emission standards have caused most of the fuel injection systems to be super high pressure and that can change the chemical composition of the biodiesel.  i have tried to avoid that in the vehicles i've purchased, but the new (used) truck we got last year would be subject to about a 20% limitation on biodiesel.

i don't have any reason to be in duluth on a sunday morning, but if i ever am, i know where i'll be.  would love to meet you and your family, and with mine.  i bet there is lots in common.

blessings to you and yours,

05/30/2018 - 5:00pm You Wicked, Slothful Servant!

(not you, M&B Wahoo)

05/29/2018 - 5:15pm You need a Reactor to make real diesel from your cooking oil

heat your oil by pumping it into a used water hearer.  mix about 15% methanol and lye with cooking oil and circulate it for a while (a day) then let it sit.  drain out the precipitate, sprinkle some water over the top too to gather impurities as it naturally displaces the diiesel fuel at the bottom of the tank.  drain that off too.

viola, you have bio diesel.  i can make about 45 gal batches.  also the precipitate can be used to make soap or if you add a salt (calling mgochemists on this one) you can use it for fertilizer, so i've been told.

picture of a bio diesel reactor, not mine though, mine is way less pretty.  i can't get the pic of mine to 'copy' into the blog pic box.  sorry.

05/29/2018 - 2:27pm I Bought a Salvage one for $5K, 1 yr old and 20K miles on it

buddy fixed it up for me, and it runs like a champ, lots of bells and whistles, and i expect it to last 200-300K miles easily.  both predecessors made it to or past 200K, and i sold them to upgrade, not b/c they were malfunctioning.

05/29/2018 - 1:45pm Putin, Consider a VW Diesel Passat or Jetta

i have had used ones for years and none of them have averaged less than 50 mpg in the summer, a few mpg's less in the winter.  highly recommend.

05/29/2018 - 1:24pm Will Fire up my Bio-diesel Reactor if/when the prices get higher

i have let it go for a couple of years since the prices came down so much.

as a point of reference, when i started driving gas was .59/gal.   i think it was because the dinosaurs had just died off...

05/29/2018 - 6:35am Slight interpretation difference

my comment was meant for us parents, that our collective kids don't need an overly generous portion of material stuff which probably all of us are tempted to do from time to time, what they really need is time walking beside them doing the things of life.  to put it another way, more is caught than taught and by that i mean that your kids pick up what they see you do way more than what they hear you do/say/tell them.

our kids have never experienced and have almost no concept of your quote here: private school, cool clothes, shopping, and hanging w rich friends

i do agree that those things are powerful influences but we have avoided such things altogether so hopefully our kids don't ever develop and appetite for them, or its less, or at least delayed.  so far, so good, but time will tell.  i have often said that wealth is a curse and that dovetails with your comment.

05/28/2018 - 8:10pm This From a Colleague, now Federal Judge, Who Served in Viet

nam at khe-sanh.  he sent it to a bunch of us on friday and is talking about a friend of his, bill rider, who is getting interviewed about what they went through.  thought you might be interested, but for many it is a generation or two older:

The Bill Rider that is mentioned below and will be honored with his story on Memorial Day is my good friend. He was in the 2nd Platoon commanded by my buddy Lt Connolly. I commanded 1st Platoon. Lt. John Ingvall 2nd Platoon

I do not know how much Bill will open up but he was with us at Khe Sanh and the Hill Battles that followed when we spread our love and affection upon the NVA. We broke out after 77 days of seige at 1:00 am on April 4 in a driving rainstorm. The 77 day seige of Khe Sanh was interesting but the frontal combat really began by taking Hill 471 at dawn on April 4th when our platoons assaulted the 66th NVA Regiment out of Hanoi. Successively we stormed up Hills 559, 689 and 681. All head on assaults. I guess you can say we were 12-0 for the season but God has away of telling you when you have done too much and things turn around.

First Battalion 1/9 (Walking Dead) earned its name. Initially we were known as Walking Death. We took more contact and took more NVA than any other unit in Vietnam. Because of the intensity and constant combat we suffered more than any battalion through the war. I guess we were the 911 call for the Marines. We eventually became the Walking Dead.

back to mgoblog:  for those that might not have studied this battle, it was a 40,000 NVA vs. 2.500 marines, and i believe it was launched during an alleged 'cease fire'.   anyway, some real life tales of our brave soldiers, and of course many did not make it home.  God bless their families and our country.

05/28/2018 - 7:08am I Have a Picture of my Oldest Brother Running Through

a tackle by calvin, i think from '76 (v. northwestern).  where exactly that picture is, that's another matter.

05/27/2018 - 9:39pm Try L.A. to the U.P.

a wonderful culture shock.

05/27/2018 - 7:14pm Make Sure there is no 'Non-Compete' Clause in any employment

agreement you sign.   i don't have any insight into boston, but i seem to remember hearing that the childrens' hospital might be one that makes employees sign a 'non compete' contract.  find that out beforehand as they can be financially devastating and/or hold you hostage in a bad job.   not commenting on massachusetts law, but in michigan they are allowed.  they can prevent someone from working in any related employement or geographic area for years.

so here's why they are bad:  your buddy gets promoted/moves on, and the next boss isnt so nice.  you end up getting in the dog house and either get fired or hate your gig.  you're out on the street, wanting a new job, but prevented from utilizing all that knowledge of contacts and your industry.  your choice is to sit out for X months/years unpaid or move away.  with family that gets way more complicted.  either that or you get some new job that isn't in your industry and there goes your great salary.

my advice to my michigan clients is that you tell them you are happy to sign that non-compete clause, just as long as they are obligated to pay you your full salary for the concurrent time period.

good luck and hopefully you make a very wise and fruitful decision for you and your family.

05/27/2018 - 3:18pm Horse scat? Why, we have standards here.

cow, sheep, goat, chicken and turkey scat, but not horses....

05/27/2018 - 9:14am I Was Just Joshing

05/26/2018 - 10:31pm This May be of Some Comfort:

"unlike most social wasps and bees, they do not attempt to sting unless handled roughly. Adults feed on flower nectar and other plant sap exudates."

they are huge though.

05/26/2018 - 10:03pm Yeah, No Thank you on the Wasps

had a go-round with hornets two springs ago that my neighbor the beekeeper took care of for us.  the wasps get in the hunting blinds too.
