how Madison loves Badger football and is so completely indifferent to Bret Bielema. I went to the Great Dane in Fitchburg once as he was doing his weekly radio show and they offered us free food if we would go listen to his show because the rest of the restaurant crowd wanted nothing to do with it.
There's a lot of fun things to do in the State Street area, but be prepared for crowds. The Kohl Center is hosting the high school girls' state basketball tournament today-Saturday so expect everything to be flooded with out-of-towners. Also, the outdoor farmer's market isn't open yet, so don't plan on going or you'll be disappointed.
One place that nobody has mentioned yet is the Vintage Brewing Company on Whitney Way (not the Vintage bar near campus, although they're owned by the same people). It's another brew pub with classic Wisconsin food along the lines of the Great Dane, but I've actually found their beers to be better overall. If you've got a car with you, it's only a 10-15 minute drive from the campus area.
The Great Dane is a good place to take people from out of town, but if you're going to go to the one by the Capitol, get in early. You'll wait an hour plus on a Friday or Saturday night if you're not there by 6. Same with the Old Fashioned, which others mentioned - I like it better than the Great Dane, but waits of 1.5 hours plus are not uncommon.

I used their links every week during the npower Championship season and they never let me down.
My fiancee and I used to live right across the street from that Great Dane, but we moved out to McFarland recently.
