05/09/2018 - 11:39pm Contact the local UM Alumni Club

One year while living in CA, I spent every other week in Seattle for almost a year and thought about contacting the local club..  When I called the contact, a small group happened to be meeting that night for dinner and a play.  I tagged along and had a great time.

Over the time I was there I was invited to several homes for dinner, attended game watching parties, used extra tickets at some games and met a number of wonderful people.  It made all the (Michigan) difference.  It really is a family.

11/10/2017 - 11:37pm PS Vue + apps = great coverage

I have the basic tier with BTN and ESPN and Fox, but I've found I can add the Watch ESPN, Fox Sports Go and BTN2Go apps that authenticate with PS Vue.  They allow me to get ESPN3, Fox Business when UM is shifted there and BTN live/video, plus and to go.  A Mohu antenna for local stations caps it off.

05/28/2017 - 9:54am Standard Poodles are like the Michigan Difference!

I've had 5 and each one was as unique and outstanding as the rest.  While other dogs are wonderful in their way, poodles do not shed, smell or drool. They may look "frou-frou", but they are wonderful house and outdoor dogs. They are water retrievers (They're called "caniche" in France which means "duck dog" with webbed feet and are very athletic, happy, enthusiastic and eligible for doggy Mensa.)

If you want a hunting dog, you might want to pick a breeder that concentrates on the "nose" and retrieving talent as they were barred from track and field competitions decades ago because they won so much.  Hunting with them has been back the last 20 years or so.

Just by watching you, they will learn the household routine and acqure a huge vocabulary. Reward the puppy (or rescue) with a pat and an "atta dog" when they do something accidently that you like, ignore the minor infractions, correct the major ones and they'll train themselves.  Train them with treats and/or love in short sessions (10 minutes or so) because they get bored.

Poodle are great therapy dogs and wonderful with kids (although young dogs can be exuberant from time to time with little ones).  Monitor it for awhile and they'll be absolutely reliable.  One I knew kept the toddlers in their unfenced yard on busy corner without supervision for hours.  She had decided it was her job and was not trained to do it.

With couple of walks a day (or a place to run several times a week). even the largest ones will be content in an apartment.  They love wrestling with other dogs, flyball and agility.  Do not leave them alone all the time or, if you must, plan on eventually having two as they love their people and get lonely.  They have a great sense of humor and are joyful. There is no better companion: several of my dogs were even invited to come with me to dinner parties.

They are good watch dogs and are one of the least likely breeds to bite.

Keep them trimmed in a puppy cut every 4-6 weeks and you'll have a drip-dry dog that needs very little brushing.  The grooming can be expensive in the city, but you can learn to do it youself.

03/19/2017 - 10:16am loved the outstanding performance

I never tire of watching this team compete.

03/01/2017 - 1:43am Roku + PSVue is great

I have a new Insignia 4K/UHD Roku tv from Best Buy and PS Vue.  It is awesome.  PS Vue ($34.95/mo) has ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, BTN.  The BTN app (on Roku) gives me the apps for BTN2GO and ESPN (Watch ESPN).  It authenticates using PS Vue as my TV provider. You can have up to 4-5 TV's on it.

I do pay $59 for Charter Internet and use Prime, but I signed with Prime for the free shipping so I don't consider the Prime video costing anything.  I have a Mohu Sky antenna for OTA channels and my local PBS.

Also the combo of  Roku and 4K/UDH kicks in whenever that quality of video is available.

PS Vue also has replays available for a couple of days after airing, so I can watch Michigan games etc.later.

I  have a new Roku Premiere on a Vizio HD TV and the improvement on the video was noticeably better than Charter cable.

I've had various Roku's for about 4 years and they have been great about keeping up with technology.  There have been some hiccups in the last few weeks with streaming (loading interrupts), but it's not clear where the fault lies.  I'm sure it'll be fixed as I didn't see that for the first month of my PS Vue service.

I carry my tablet around with me and watch TV on that as well.  What's not to like?

PS I'm a female in my 70's.  If I can assemble these electronics, so can any of you!

02/20/2017 - 4:45pm In a word, no!

What will they burn if they can't find their couches?

The degree of unruliness may not approach that of the fans of tOSU, but I wouldn't want that fanbase running around campus at night.  I still remember when the Friday before the big game many male students stood guard on the buildings all night to prevent mottos and epithets in green spray paint.

02/09/2017 - 11:59am psvue with Roku and a local Mohu antenna does it for me

Free trial for a month. Tier 2 ($35) has btn and btn2 go. Many games are available for a short time for replay. Kids' pgmg more limited.

12/28/2016 - 8:50pm My Great Wall encounter

I was with a tour in China and we stayed at the same hotel as the Alumni Assn wa-a-ay back in the 80's.  One day, our tour was at the Great Wall.  Our group started getting our cameras out and trying to figure out how to get a group shot.  A young woman offered to take pix with each of our cameras.  When I reached for my camera, she noticed my alumnae watch and gave me a hearty "Go Blue".  The other tour members were very impressed!

12/22/2016 - 12:21pm Academic acceptance and performance

may be expectations here and not there.

There was a time under Tressel when OSU apparently had a credit course on Football 101 taught by Tressel and open only to football players. I'm fairly sure I was watching a UM/ND football game when the commentators mentioned it and then said something like, "Of course, you would never hear about these two institutions doing such a thing!"

12/20/2016 - 11:34pm Watch some of those early games

and see them compete with the best in the country...  You'll end up a fan.... Women's softball is a great spectator sport with lots of action and Michigan is a terrific team.  If you miss that, watch the College World Series in May-June.  We'll most likely be there.

07/04/2016 - 9:18am If you travel on business or pleasure,

membership is a huge benefit.  You can connect with incredible people, attend an event or casual get-together while you're there and/or be invited to private homes, if you're lucky.  I commuted every other week to Seattle from CA for 10 months and the Holiday Inn got really old as I was the only business woman lodging there.   It took one phone call to connect and attend a play with a dozen people that night!  The events and invitations meant so much.  The alumni clubs are very inclusive.

Friends of mine were invited to attend a private reception and musical performance in Vienna as the result of a contact in advance of their trip.

You can also save serious money on a new Ford product.  I priced a car and was awarded about a $1500 discount beyond the price negotiated with the dealer.

When we used to go to the Rose Bowl, our California club occasionally knew of extra bowl tickets and spaces available on our buses to the game.

BTW the Michigan festivities at the hotel where the tour and the teams stay are available to alumni sooo much fun!  I don't know if they are only open to Association members.

05/28/2016 - 7:50am The opponent's band

is not well treated in some stadiums.   It may not be cost savings so much as the reception they receive.  I can understand performing at MSU and ND because we're so much better represented in the stands.

Wisconsin comes to mind as they don't want to hear any band but their own.  Their fans verbally abuse the band from the visiting school the entire time they are on the field and sometimes individuals will harang the alumni club groups in the stands with obscenities during the entire game. No one does anything about it.  They are especially virulent about Michigan, but I've experienced the same bad behavior when attending games at Camp Randall against other schools as well.  I always found this amazing because people from Wisconsin (outside of game day) are in general very polite and pleasant.  Maybe it is something in the water in Madtown!

Iowa fans can get obnoxious as well.

As an aside, I've never seen the degree of staffing at away games that we see in Michigan Stadium.  It's not unusual to see people escorted out in AA.

05/21/2016 - 12:10pm You can watch it without cable today

click on the btn2go link on on the schedule bar at the bottom of the frame and it goes right to the video with no login.

05/20/2016 - 1:34pm Does it have BTN?

How can I get an invite if it carries BTN?

05/19/2016 - 11:11pm I've lost my BTN stream

Any suggestions? has an obnoxious block trying to require you to disable the adblockers.  If I do, I get ads that never end because they want my email for a login. Others I've tried have the same block. Help.

05/14/2016 - 9:37pm Is there any radio coverage?

I've been looking but couldn't find any.

05/11/2016 - 11:31pm Correct me if I'm wrong, but

I believe that they changed the strike zone this year (lowering it at least) and Megan's strength was her rise ball.  I think it might have thrown off her game and it took her a much of the early part of the season to be able to throw something else.

04/24/2016 - 1:22pm HAIL, YES!

I love it!  I couldn't be in the marching band in the 60's and prohibiting women was over-the-top offensive to those of us who were members of excellent HS marching bands.

04/16/2016 - 7:55am Does anyone record the games?

I'd love to be able to watch replays on mgovideo or some other place.  I'm a tv cord cutter without a reliable access to btn2go on Charter.  I subscribe to BTN plus and can stream the ESPN's, but the series are usually split between btn2go and BTN plus!  Any suggestions?

04/15/2016 - 8:11pm For my money

a Roku with a lifetime license for playon (pc sw)  which gives you lots of channels in HD and dvr for any streaming you want and casting it to your tv.  Playon Plus has been on sale for about $49, regular Playon is free. Mohu ($79 - 129) local stations and you're covered.  I think there's a script for BTN, another script is called Basic Cable with the ESPN flavors with most of the other cable channels.

04/10/2016 - 2:36pm I'm no expert, but

I believe they reduced the size of the strike zone.  Besta's best pitch is the rise ball and what was a strike last year is now being called a ball.  i don't think she's been able to recover.

03/24/2016 - 1:46pm It took years, maybe decades, before

the atmosphere at Crisler approach Yost.  When the crowd got going, the wooden bleachers literally bounced up and down and the noise was deafening.

There were no reserved seats for students and many camped overnight in January to get tickets. They were like hens' teeth.  I've experienced fandom frenzy may times over the years, but Yost was the most intense ever!

03/20/2016 - 10:08am Nicole Artz

competed with some significant injuries.  Others did also, I'm sure.  Those women are tough!!!

03/14/2016 - 10:00pm Charter in SW Michigan has it on the extended basic tier

I don't know anyone who can't get it in GR and KZoo

03/14/2016 - 5:14pm Yes, Mohu

Mohu Leaf HD amplified (which can hang behind your tv or on the wall or window) is fabulous for a metropolitan area.  Cost is about $79.

The Mohu Sky HD Multidirectional (also amplified) works out to about 60 miles if you live in no man's land like I do.  It'll work in your attic or on the roof really well.  Connect it to your old satellite or cable feed and it'll support your whole house.  Cost is about $129 refurbished -$150 new.

Order from Mohu, Amazon or buy it at Best Buy.

03/10/2016 - 10:00am The link to many of the movies listed

is Larry Kasdan, a UM grad, who wrote and/or directed many of them.  He often puts Michigan gear on one of the characters whether there is a overt connection to UM or not.  The Big Chill and Grand Canyon are examples.

11/25/2015 - 6:52pm The stream is in the schedule on

Assume it won't fail us.

11/18/2015 - 9:14pm It was close and exciting

after that disappointing first set.  They looked disorganized, I turned it off and checked in on the 3rd set.  They were relentless!

11/15/2015 - 10:34pm I'd recommend handicapped because...

Since the renovation, they are much better: east side of the stadium (instead of the end zone), 40 yard line, no stairs and right at the main level entrance where there are extra people to assist, proximity to restrooms immediately on the concourse, no problem with others standing in front of him.  I've sat with a friend in a wheelchair in the old and new accommodations, it is pretty nice and usually not all that crowded.  Try to get in there.

07/10/2015 - 12:28pm Stream for everything I need

I have Charter internet without cable tv ($40). gives me most televised games and USA live tv (including BTN, ESPN all flavors and MSNBC).  I rarely have to go to a sports bar to watch anything.  Ads and malware sites can besiege you.  Use Adblock Plus and don't click on anything except your choice of streams and ignore anything that tries to download or any warnings that you need to upgrade something to run your program .

For local tv, you can't beat Mohu.  They make military antennae.  I've had the amplified HD Leaf for 3 years and it's great. They say 50 mile radius, mine goes 60 in the flatlands where I live. the limitations are that it will service only 1 tv at a time, maybe more on the same setting with a splitter (I've never tried this.)  It is about $79.

Newer models are the Curve, an upgrade to the Leaf, and the omni-directional Sky which will service all the households tvs and can be mounted in the attic, your roof or tower.  I'm going to upgrade for the Sk very soon. (The Sky is $149 on their site or $100 for a scratch-and-dent model.)

06/17/2015 - 7:25am General advice for France

I've traveled with friends who have had some French and I usually end up being the spokeswoman without a shred of French.

Get a little guide to the words that appear on menues.  Mine was tiny, about 3"x4", and fit in a pocket. (I did it to avoid sweetbreads which the French love.)

Best way to start to a conversation: "Pardon, monsieur, (or madam) I have a problem."  (Most speak some English, but do not wish to embarrass themselves.  If you use a French word here and there, you have given them permission to speak bad English.  They will go out of their way to help, will use whatever English they know and you'll both be laughing at the improv by the end of the conversation.  Sign language and good humor work wonders.)  BTW,don't shout, they're not hard of hearing.

If you're not sure of what you want to eat, ask the matre d' what is good that day.  They'll be very flattered and you will not be disappointed.  Stay away from touristy places and American hotels.  Menues are usually posted outside.

I love France and have never been disappointed.  I rarely opt for expensive meals: the bistros and small family restaurants are usually terrific.  A more unusual favorite of mine is couscous, a North African stew that is a standard part of French cuisine.  It is outstanding.  If you see a "couscouserie", the restaurant specializes in it.  (Rouen has a very nice one a couple of blocks east, I think, of the cathedral.)

After several trips to France, I began dabbling in cooking French regional cuisine.  It's very rewarding especially if you begin simply with roast chicken and branch out from there.

For a pleasant, reasonable lunch, I recommend going to a charcuterie (cooked meats).  Pick up some meats or combos (a terrine is kind of like a meatloaf or actual pate, there are often several to pick from - rabbit is delicious), some cheese (there or at a fromagerie), a bagette and something to drink.  Stop at a patisserie for a sweet dessert and find a park or quiet spot for lunch.

In England, the food has improved tremendously, however pubs and Indian restaurants are very dependable.

05/22/2015 - 9:33pm Replay of the games are on espn3

The replays are being posted within an hour of the end of the game on espn3.  I have Charter, but no cable tv and I've been able to watch them without any problem.

05/13/2015 - 9:18am here, here on "Germs

Guns and Steel", "The Guns of August", "And the Band Played On",  AND Harry Potter (I know it's fiction, but read the entire series in order.  It's as brilliant for adults as it is for youth.  They are great  to read along with your kids.)

There are so "aha" moments in GG and S et al.  They give plausible reasons why things happened that you wondered or speculated about over the years.

Another book to suggest is "Your Inner Fish" by Neil Shuban.  It is used as a text in medical schools for evolutionary anatomy.  It was also the basis for a PBS series that you can watch on or Youtube.  The episodes are titled: "Your Inner Fish", "Your Inner Reptile" and "Your Inner Monkey".  Fascinating.

04/03/2015 - 8:40pm no audio

I'm trying to watch it on BTN Plus and the only audio I can receive is the recorded "gopher trivia"!  Anyone else having that problem.  Without the commentary, I can't tell who's at bat.....

Add to that we're behind.

Anybody have any ideas?  If I look at the little device status in my win 7 lower rt corner, I can see the chrome icon with btn2go and the name of the game, but I can't select it.  I'm tearing my hair.

03/23/2015 - 2:29pm Get a mohu

hd antenna.  (Multi-directional is best, but the hd will go out to 65 miles.)  See my post on

03/23/2015 - 1:07pm Streaming

I've had great luck with, they even have tru tv.  You can see if the game is on the basketball list or go to live tv for btn, various flavors of espn and cbs and other cable channels.

03/22/2015 - 2:19pm I love the softball program but

didn't think I'd see this kind of firepower against OSU.  The scoreboard can't handle double-digit runs in an inning!

03/05/2015 - 10:39am you can stream it live for free on  (espn, espn2 and 3) plus btn, on-air and huge list of other networks.  It's a Canadian site and is high quality.  If you want to use it with Roku/playon or some other streamer to tv, the one time fee is $5.  I've used it for about 3 years with great availabilty and reliability: none of those irritating ads that download malware.

02/22/2015 - 6:41pm I tried everything to find a stream all weekend

It must have been so exciting.  I did watch gametracker, but that is hardly worth it.  I hope more will get televised somehow before the Big 10 season starts.  The SEC network(and maybe the Big 12, I think)  requires a subscription. Please post if you know of an option. Bloo-hoo!

02/15/2015 - 2:49pm I'd love to see more softball, w gymnastics and volleyball

do you have any suggestions?  I subscribe to btnplus (no good out of conference) and cbs sports (Michigan Digital Network) but unless I'm able to catch ooc live broadcasts, the replays either don't work or are not available.  For example, check out the UM MSU women's gymnastic match on Friday night.

02/09/2015 - 8:32am I agree!

No wolverine is an ex-wolverine, it's in the blood!

02/08/2015 - 10:49pm Can't remember what year, but

within the last two or three  years, all the MSU grads in the legislature tried to force UM to go private so that MSU could get the state money instead.  Last year it was reported that UM was the only state campus that was not cutting the budget and was continuing to invest in building etc. That underscores the importance of the capital campaigns for Michigan.

01/21/2015 - 2:40pm Have adblock

Have adblock on…

Click the basketball or football and select desired game regardless of network.  Wait awhile for ads to expire 30+ seconds.  Do not download anything. and watch game.  It has a lot of btn games this year.

I use for playon, but you can watch btn and the espn's (and many other channels) on your computer directly from the website.  You can show it on your tv by an hdmi cable, casting it, or whatever.....

These are all free.

01/18/2015 - 10:42am Out of State Tuition

I thought I had read somewhere that the Athletic Dept remits the full tuition to the U for each scholarship.  I assumed that meant over $40K for an out-of-state student.  Can anyone remember or verify that?

01/12/2015 - 7:34am Whiskey

Brandy was Whisky's pup, I think.  They were adorable wirehaired terriers.  There was at least one season where the two of them were out there together.  Supposedly it was not allowed, but they did it so well and the crowd was so delighted that it went on for years: about 1966 on into the 70s.

There was an elderly man with a long "cane" who sat in the row in front of us for several games until we realized the cane had a very long straw!

01/11/2015 - 5:24pm It's not on ESPN3

It's on WatchESPN with a requirement for an SEC subscription. FIE is right!

I use Charter only for internet.  I've been trying to decide whether to drop CBS Sports in favor of BTN2go  and BTNPlus, but I don't know whether I'll get more coverage.

Anyone have any opinions?

I can get the football and basketball on streaming sites but I miss out on softball, gymnastics and volleyball big time.

01/10/2015 - 9:50pm replay or highlights??

Would love to see some or all of it.  Would have to belong to the sec subscribers on cbssports.  I have a michigan subscription, but no go.

01/10/2015 - 8:14pm Gymnastics (Men's and Women's) are the best!!

It's amazing how demanding the sports are: grace, beauty, control and underlying strength.  I watch it every chance I get.  Go Blue!

01/08/2015 - 9:38pm I love

watching this sport and OUR TEAM!
