01/19/2017 - 2:34pm ESPN pessimism

This is what I was thinking reading through. The problem is there is a big confounding variable with the coaching changes and general lack of success of the program.

I wonder if this was done for a more stable program over the last 5 years like Stanford or Ohio State, how the results would look.

One key difference is that they dont have an elite coaching staff. Thats what a meaningful portion of our preseason hype is built on

11/10/2013 - 8:27am Unrelated - I just need advice from someone with experience

"I coach a pee wee team. Our O-line consistently gets blown up by teams with older, more experienced kids -- what kind of plays could I call to prevent other teams from tee'ing off on our major weakness?"

09/04/2013 - 7:45pm I think its a sensible

I think its a sensible strategy for Notre Dame. If they're going to be playing Clemson, FSU, Miami, they should be recruiting kids away from those schools, thereby weakening their opponents (to at least some degree). If Michigan focused only nationally, the MSUs / Wisconsins would get better players from the only footprint they can recruit and would become stronger opponents, while we're sapping away the best recruits from schools we dont even play

I think the assumption is that an outlier is unlikely to be repeated and so should be removed to get a better projection of future performance.

In this case, I would actually agree that the 5.3yds/carry is the right stat line. Given his reported talent, I think its more likely that opposing defenses may be able to contain him for at most 90% of his carries, but sooner or later he's going to rip off a long run, and be closer to that 5.3 number

Apparently Lars Anderson is an adjunct professor at Bama, and has a book about Bama and the tornado coming out soon... Doubt it's anything bad, or at most, some fluff piece on over signing

I've always thought this so I'm glad to see some reasonable answers. On one hand, there is a lot of very illuminating content here. On the other, those guys are professionals and may feel no need to wade through the garbage that gets posted to get info they could probably surmise themselves.

11/25/2012 - 2:09pm I don't know, yes Oregon is

I don't know, yes Oregon is fun to watch but does anyone give them a shot against lsu or Alabama who have fast AND big athletes and focus on defense?

Systems are fun and can lead to consistency but if you want to win it all, you need the latter which Michigan is historically wont to land. It'll happen with another year of consistency

11/25/2012 - 2:03pm This is a very good post,

This is a very good post, it's a fair assessment of where we are in terms of our tier of teams. Our best year in that time frame also came in osu's best year unfortunately, so luck has a lot to do with that list.

hokes ability to recruit and teach tough football, and yes, Dave Brandons willingness to upgrade facilities and play the money game are putting us in a good spot to capitalize on luck when it inevitably comes our way

11/25/2012 - 1:51pm Eh, I'm not concerned. Hoke

Eh, I'm not concerned. Hoke is definitely the right guy for the job. Just because Borges cant fit his system to his players doesn't mean he's a bad coach - he could be really good at doing one thing well

Ultimately, I think it comes down to the talent level. Attrition and poor seasons are going to make it hard to catch up but if this coaching staff can bring in two top 5 classes after what happened in 08-11, imagine what they'll do after a couple of years of fairly strong performances.

We weren't able to beat more talented or more stable programs but the teams we should beat, we did soundly. Good things ahead

11/25/2012 - 11:30am 8-4 was what people were

8-4 was what people were expecting before we saw how bad the big ten was this year...

That said, besides Denard, we lack a game-changing type player on offense that you need to break a couple of these games our way. We'll get those recruits as we continue to improve so I still think the future is bright

11/11/2012 - 6:10pm Yeah we seem to lose them but

Yeah we seem to lose them but we suffered through 3 really bad seasons, it's pretty amazing we're even sniffing top 5 classes back to back. Once this program starts rolling again, we can complain about missing out on the studs

11/11/2012 - 2:00pm I hate the SEC as much as

I hate the SEC as much as anyone but I think 6 years of decisive national championship wins (to one loss), should get the winner of that conference into the NC game. I'd also bet that happens if either Georgia or Bama wins the SECCG by a big margin.

I definitely agree that the optimism should be tempered but I dont see Balas's line of reasoning at all.  If anything, I cant see Green doing anything but taking his time and visits before deciding. He gets to be a guest of honor at big games across the country and weigh his options. Plus you have to figure with the Dawson decommit, he would be slightly concerned about committing before he's taken all his officials...

09/03/2012 - 11:37am I was going to say I wouldn't

I was going to say I wouldn't be surprised by any regression as the best SEC programs are reaping the rewards of winning, but this is a good point. Hopefully with good coaches and the subsequent wins and recruiting, the conference will get tougher and be better for it.

09/03/2012 - 11:26am I don't mind another post

I don't mind another post about this, but this just seems lazy. Add some stats, QB rushes, certain plays that illustrate what you're talking about.

09/03/2012 - 11:09am I read somewhere that high

I read somewhere that high schools in less football-mad places like Michigan and Ohio(I know Ohio is rush with talent but they aren't as fanatical as the south) take the best athletes and put them on offense, whereas the south tends to do the opposite - putting fast and athletic tight ends at safety and linebacker etc.

09/02/2012 - 11:40am Great post

I'm really glad they scheduled this game. We got handled and really cant muster many excuses. We were without two badly-needed players but there needs to be greater leadership among the players in the offseason to make sure everyone feels accountable. We lost a key starter in Countess but that's not bad luck, that's another team playing way more physical than us.

At least now we know what our goals look like. When Hoke says he wants to "hear football", we will know what that means way more than the other teams on our schedule - save for (not coincidentally) Michigan State. If Hoke really is as good of a coach as we think, we will only get better for having played this game.

09/02/2012 - 10:32am I think they can still be

I think they can still be taken advantage of in the passing game, we just weren't able to connect enough to do that.
Basically we all knew Michigan would have to execute perfectly and get some luck to beat a much more talented team, and we didn't do that. Im glad at least Borges took what the D gave him - a healthy denard.

09/02/2012 - 10:12am I actually feel really

I actually feel really positive about this play. It may have been questionable, but I think it taught out guys the main lesson Hoke keeps preaching to be physical. Yes, that was the most physically talented team we'll face but it's good to see up close and personal the vision the coach has for this team.

09/02/2012 - 10:00am I think the gameplan was to

I think the gameplan was to have him run but not with Alabamas D focused on him. Id bet those first few series where he threw the ball were meant to first open the defense up by making them respect the pass and when the D loosened up on run support, go wild. Denard didn't execute and they weren't willing to risk his health if his passes weren't hitting
