Great response. Please enlighten me, oh wise one! Why am I so stupid to think that a coach who is 0-10 as an underdog and 0-5 against his arch rival shouldn’t be replaced? At what other major program is this tolerated?
Fantastic article SC! Really enjoy reading your stuff (mostly via twitter) due to the fact I never played football and am always learning now. The thing that sticks out for me, and is frustrating as hell, is the point you make about how well the OSU offensive staff prepared and EXACTLY which matchups they wanted to exploit. They even had adjustments to Brown's adjustments ready to go at a moment's notice. You cited no such preparation on the Michigan side, stating that they ran what got them to this point with a new wrinkle or two. Why/how is there such a disparity between the two coaching staffs and their respective ability to game plan for a specific opponent?
Completely agree with this sentiment. I’ll ask the board to weigh in. Do we think that Harbaugh will change the offense enough to get to Tier 1 status? I don’t think the defense will be the problem going forward. The crossing routes will get figured out. My worry that Michigan will remain a Tier 2 team stems from my lack of faith in JH’s willingness to update the O.
I’m still pretty upset about yesterday’s game but if I’m honest with myself I’m pleasantly surprised to be 3-2 in what I though would be the 5 biggest games on the schedule (OSU, ND, MSU, Wisky, PSU). I would not have put myself in the 10-2 camp preseason.
For me, this is the most frustrating thing about Harbaugh. Instead of attacking opponents’ CLEAR weaknesses he stubbornly adheres to his “wear them out” with the run game philosophy. It just boggles the mind why you wouldn’t game plan that week’s offensive strategy based on the opponent at hand. I mean this is basic coaching 101.
I’m in a similar, probably worse, situation. I live and work in the Columbus area All my sales accounts, neighbors, etc know that I am a lifelong Michigan fan. I will be taking shit all day, every day this week at work and at home. Not looking forward to it!
For me that’s the most depressing aspect of the current situation we are in. There doesn’t seem to be a clear way forward to getting out of Tier 2 status and into the Elite status of OSU, Alabama, etc. It means setting ourselves up for constant disappointment and frustration by season’s end year after year after year.
Todd, this is very sad but also very real. I realized midway through the 2nd half, sitting in those stands, reading the game tweets as Irish fans around me were going crazy, that Michigan was no longer an elite program. It was one of those moments when everything becomes crystal clear and a feeling of understanding, acceptance and finally peace filled my mind. I've accepted the fact that UM football is now a 2nd tier program. I know I'm going to be in a much better place as we go through this season because I've accepted what this program is now and I can't expect the wins I once did. Can it get back to elite status? I think so but it's going to take some very drastic changes by the Administration, AD and coaching staff.
I think this is a really important point Bando that cannot be over stressed. Leadership is clearly not coming from the coaches (see comments above about Hoke's incredible high-fiving, butt-slapping and clapping abilities). Where is it going to come from? The team seemed completely lost on the field last night.
That had to be the longest ride home of my life. It was my first time to South Bend and everything was awesome (tailgating, tour of campus, etc) until the first quarter was over. It was clear that soon in the game that we were in for a huge disappointment What is it about this team that they are so bad on the road?
but if the coaching staff remains intact, especially the offensive staff, how is this team going to improve on this year's record? The only reason Borges called a good game was because his ass was on the line. The offense looked great today but was crap the rest of November. I believe in the kids that are here but not in the staff that is paid a LOT of money to develop and put these kids in a position to be successful.
I'm so convinced that even an injured Devin is better than 90% of QBs in that instance. Wish he would have seen the open lane and run in it. I know he could have done it!
Said so somewhere else on here. It's NEVER acceptable to ALMOST win against OHIO. This program is completely mired in mediocrity, and so is it's fan base when a "close loss" to OSU is acceptable.
asked the seniors what they wanted to do. These seniors have been through a lot. He has a great knack for being in tune with these kids. Just needs to get a better handle on what is happening on the offensive side of the ball. If he can accomplish that he will be a complete coach.
When I started laughing the people I was with had very concerned looks on their faces. Not knowing who MSC is, one of them said she could have MS. Just sounded loaded to me and now hearing it again I think that is the correct call.

#FireHarbaugh. That’s it. I’m done. New leadership is needed.

The bigger question is why is this still happening in year 4 for DB? This isn’t an isolated incident.
Welcome! This shit feels like Brady Hoke coached teams circa 2013-2014.
Is the football actually a hot potato to Patterson?!?!
Ok let's finish off this 3 and out
Can you recall what the stated reasons were?

I would neg him too if I could. I thought maybe it was an Mgopoints thing? Is there a number I need to get to?
Would love to have seen him reach his full potential while he was here but best of luck to him in the League.

This is what will bother me for a very long time; HOW Michigan lost. Never expected this kind of defensive collapse in year 4 of Harbaugh.
Of course. But we’re talking about preseason expectations here, not adjusted ones mid-to-late season.

They are not the issue, Harbaugh is. Until he changes his philosophy on offense, Pep’s hands are tied.

Harbaugh appears to be saying "Put your helmet on" after the initial blows.
