05/02/2012 - 7:26pm More neck injuries=drawback

An athletic trainer once told me that the rigidity of the modern football helmet reduces neck injuries. After I broke three fingers one season, I inquired about why helmets had to be so hard. He explained that softer, externally padded helmets have the tendency to "stick" to one another, albeit briefly, when a collision happens. The increased "stickiness", of helmets colliding at full speed, leads to much more frequent and much worse neck injuries, as heads get twisted more vigorously. Rigid, slick helmets deflect off each other and reduce the chance that players' heads will get twisted during high speed collisions. It sucks that the rigid properties of current helmets reduce neck injuries, but promote concussions. Pick your poison I guess.

04/07/2010 - 6:04pm should richrod continue

should richrod continue on a similar path with k, that would be great (except for the bad third year business). check out this post on a duke blog:

it's on par with this blog's best stuff. good read.

09/26/2009 - 8:16am i'm hopeful for an upset over

i'm hopeful for an upset over osu this year, but won't bet on it...yet. i think our defense will get a little better as the year goes on and gerg(and staff) is able to watch more film and gameplan for the teams we face, before half time of each game. on the flip side, osu will improve a lot over the course of the year. tressel has demonstrated he is a good coach willing to make adjustments in the past.

i am witnessing a growing sense of discomfort towards michigan by my cousin, a rabid and dumb buckeye fan. immediately following the freep garbage, he was the type of guy saying things like rich rod should be fired, and richrod was a bad fit for the big ten/michigan. buckeye fans certainly wanted the richrod revolution to be squashed before it had a chance to really get started. too late.

1990 penn state at notre dame. i was 10. the rocket got hurt and didn't play the second half. notre dame lost. the game prob. cost him the heisman. my dad and i were on the field during early pre-game warm ups and briefly said hi to joe-pa. even though i was very young, i vaguely remember him pleading for me to "come to penn state" when i was of age.

09/03/2009 - 10:47pm in the version i just saw he

in the version i just saw he was wearing a number. he must have changed his mind and put the old one back on. let me know when he retires the old jersey for good. drama queen antics aside, i think the vikings are going to legit this year.

Live in Raleigh now and will be coming up only for the ND game. Having grown up near South Bend, victories over the Irish are especially satisfying. Go Blue!

08/20/2009 - 7:28am Have any kids from florida

Have any kids from florida "wilted under barwis"? there may be some, but the players that come to my mind as having not held up under a more running-till-you-puke-centric conditioning program have been midwestern/michigan guys.

michigan will continue to recruit top talent instate. when it comes to filling out a recruiting class with more "marginal" players, i have no problem with the staff's strategy of getting guys that can flat out run, and have a passion for the game. it seems that the cultures that engender these two qualities, for one reason or another, mostly occur out of state.

Good news. Am excited about reading more research based content. Recruiting: will be good to feel 1/2 as creepy about checking on the status of 17 year olds. Now I will only be going to one website to follow their moves. Also, cool to hear that this site, and other well run michigan blogs, have earned a level of respect with the athletic department.

07/24/2009 - 3:38am this is the best post/comment

this is the best post/comment i have ever seen on this site. good energy; plays well to the optimists like myself. this is the sort of energy the team will be punching with come
game-day, way too far away. I am happy to see our team recruit speed instead of "local boy really wants an offer and he looks a lot like mike hart". since rodriguez started his job at uofm, michigan has been consistently taking "3 star" recruits that can run fast over "3 and 4 star" recruits from the frozen states that have gone to michigan's camp since grade 8. I understand the nicety of rewarding consistent campers, but damn, am i glad that we are finally getting faster as a team. speed is the name of the game in the national picture. and the national picture is what all of us here are looking towards. go blue.
