06/21/2018 - 4:18pm I think it's a pretty good…

I think it's a pretty good list, and skewed toward beers that aren't too hard to get, which I appreciate. Other than maybe the two Tree House beers, pretty much everything in the Top 50 can be bought off the shelf, at least in some parts of country.

Contrast with BA's Top Beers list: only 1 beer in the top 10 isn't incredibly difficult to acquire (Heady Topper) and most of the Top 50 is pretty difficult. Their #1 beer regularly sells for over $1000/12oz bottle.

Neither approach is necessarily right or wrong, but they are doing different things.

06/21/2018 - 4:00pm Agreed - no other MI…

Agreed - no other MI breweries are top 24. I wish we had more, but we're just not there. Short's and Dark Horse are maybe just outside that, and Kuhnhenn used to be, but they seem committed to shooting themselves in foot.

But wouldn't a rouge state be a natural member of the Red Alliance??

05/15/2018 - 1:03pm Tip: Vote Early

One tip for everyone....

If you tend to check the map in the morning before marching orders have been issued, go ahead and make whatever move you want at that time. You can always change it later after orders have been issued.

That way if you forget to go back later, your move will still count for something. An uncoordinated/strategically-questionable move is much better than no move at all.

Certainly won’t be crowded; your wallet might be sorry though. Isn’t a pint of Two Hearted like $9.

02/19/2018 - 7:16pm A bit sad to see it go, but

A bit sad to see it go, but if you read the reasons given in the article, it seems like a totally defensible move.

I remember confusion over exam or event start times (also mentioned in the article); this will remove that ambiguity across the board.

01/29/2018 - 11:39am Pizza House?

This might be an unpopular opinion on here because of how deeply tied in they are with the Athletic Department, but I've always felt that Pizza House takes the cake for Worst Quality for a given price. It's incredibly expensive (basically Main St. prices on South U) for what's basically standard bar food and slightly above average pizza.

Even their beer is expensive - my brother used to work there, and his joke when asking if I wanted to come in and sit at his table was "come have a beer - it's $7 Two Hearted day!"

12/08/2017 - 7:39am Patterson didn’t beat Bama

Last time Ole Miss beat Bama was 2015, when Chad Kelly was still the QB.

12/05/2017 - 11:27am Deterioration of NFL Players

"The NFL does not sustain itself on the deterioration of the it’s players. That comment makes absolutely no sense."

Really? I can see quibbling about this claim on the margins (though I wouldn't), but you honestly think it's a completely unreasonable claim to make?

12/05/2017 - 11:21am Seth Curry?

I think you mean Steph Curry?

Seth Curry is also an NBA player (and Steph's brother), but doesn't seem very germane to the topic of foul rates on NBA Superstars.

11/30/2017 - 9:35am Do u Even watch teh Games NERD???

I don't care what your NERDstats say. I bet you never evn played football!!!!1

09/19/2017 - 11:58am Similar

Winter before last I got stuck just down the street from there - the dip on Felch near the Ann Arbor Distilling Co.. Got stuck down there for 30 minutes and couldn't escape in any direction. Frustrating, but probably even more embarassing.

09/06/2017 - 4:34pm 3Mbps

I'm in Ann Arbor, just a few blocks from Downtown, and the best I can get through AT&T is 3 Mbps down. Maybe I should just get dial-up...

This is my problem too. Unless you live in a part of A2 with Uverse, Comcast Internet + (any supplementary service) saves you basically nothing vs. Comcast Int+TV.

You'll be happy to hear Cuban cigars are sort of legal now, as long as you imported them yourself for personal use, per a Presidential Policy Directive issued on October 14th.

10/31/2016 - 9:19am Overall Win %

The tiebreakers are listed here.

Ohio State would go. Basically, the teams would tie every step listed until:

5.    The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative.

This would eliminate Penn St. The comparison would then revert to just Michigan vs. OSU, which OSU would win due to the head-to-head victory.

10/27/2016 - 10:57pm +1 for this. I think a lot of

+1 for this. I think a lot of people want a trial of X v. Y to solve some broad problem, when that's emphatically not the issue at hand.

10/04/2016 - 11:56am Pretty sure you're joking

Pretty sure you're joking, but even though we all like to laugh about Beckman/Hazell/et al, some damn good coaches have come out of the MAC:

  • Urban Meyer (BGSU)
  • Nick Saban (Toledo)
  • Gary Pinkel (Toledo)
  • Brian Kelly (CMU)
  • Butch Jones (CMU)
  • Dave Doeren (NIU)

And if you're willing to go back a bit...

  • Bo Schembechler (Miami)
  • Woody Hayes (Miami)
  • Ara Parseghian (Miami)
  • Don Nehlen (BGSU)

Giving up 55 to Purdue does seem like a fireable offense.

05/25/2016 - 8:10am I agree

I agree with most of this, except maybe the Briles contract issues. Obviously we still need more information, but isn't it plausible that there's enough smoke here to terminate him for cause, which makes the size of his contract less of an issue?

04/25/2016 - 11:42am Pretty much same here. Been

Pretty much same here. Been an almost daily reader since my senior year of high school back in 2005-06. Wish I could remember why I first came here. It may have just come up in a Google search or something, because I certainly wasn't reading other sports blogs at the time.

I've thought about it before, and I think I may have read more words written by Brian than any other author. I should try to run the numbers on that some time.

I too miss the haloscan.

Exactly. The term "DJ" is almost too broad, because it can imply a lot of different things.

04/10/2016 - 10:05am I've felt this way for a few

I've felt this way for a few seasons too. It seems like the goal every year is to be the 6th or 7th best team in the conference, because that keeps the steak alive.

03/24/2016 - 7:07pm Agreed.Particularly on the

Agreed.

Particularly on the beer point. I love drinking a few beers while watching football, but if I start drinking at noon it will just wipe me out for most of the day. Later games allow me to get my shit done, then invite some friends over to drink some beers and watch together.

I thought someone (maybe even Brian) eventually wrote that it wasn't a violation because of a loophole created when Hill signed some sort of financial aid documents.

03/15/2016 - 10:30am A-fucking-men.I'm a huge

A-fucking-men.

I'm a huge sports fan, but I hate the Super Bowl - largely for the two reasons you mention, plus some distaste for 1) the garish spectacle, usually celebrating some shiny new taxpayer-funded, privately owned stadium and 2) the fact that it's less a football game than a variety show with a football game wedged in the middle.

I usually watch anyway out of inertia, but if a friend gave me something else to do, I'd be there. One year during college I went to Red Hawk (which didn't have TVs) with a friend and we nearly the only ones in there for 2 hours, and just shot the shit with the very bored bartender and server - it was actually pretty great.

01/18/2016 - 11:26am Not sure if you're being

Not sure if you're being serious here.

Anyone who said oil would run out by 2016 was an idiot - you're attacking a strawman. That said, we are certainly using it at a greater rate than the earth "creates" it, and easily tappable reserves will eventually be depleted, probably in the next 50 years.

And oil is most definitely a fossil fuel.

01/11/2016 - 7:56pm Think you're wrong on both

Think you're wrong on both points. First, the NBA Playoffs are FAR more predictable than the NFL. Second, I think you're selling the Cardinals short - they might be the best team in the league right now. And if you want to point to the Seahawks Week 17 win over them, remember that 1) Arizona didn't really care if they won that game, and 2) Seattle lost at home just a week earlier to a terrible Rams team starting Case Keenum.

12/07/2015 - 4:45pm I think the consensus is that

I think the consensus is that with Smart to UGa Pruitt is taking Smart's position at Bama. He's an Alabama grad and had his first major college coaching gig there. Seems like it'd be nearly impossible to steal him out from under Bama if they want him (and I'm hearing they do.)

Thread jack jacking: anyone know what "Section H" is? I was given two tickets in Section H, it's not on the chart or mentioned on the website. I assume it's a club seat?

You seriously don't think any of their other beers are any good? Expedition, Third Coast, their Lagers, the more limited stuff?

09/18/2015 - 9:44am Shitting on Bell's

Man, everyone shitting on Bell's in this thread.

I think people associate Bell's with Oberon, which definitely feels generic and "macro-y", but they brew a ton of styles, and almost all are great:

Two Hearted: One of the best widely-available IPAs in the world

Expedition Stout: Maybe the best non-adjunct imperial stout made in MI, and one of the best-aging beers in the world.

Black Note: World class BBA stout

Uranus: By far the best Black IPA I've ever had.

Saturn: Cheapest BBA Barleywine I've ever bought, and it was great to boot

Mars: I don't typically like malt-forward IPAs, but this blew me away.

Jupiter: Great exapmle of a rare style (imperial brown)

Hopslam: Not my thing, but widely regarded as a world class DIPA

Hopsoulution: Not well known, but one of my favorite MI DIPAs

Third Coast Old Ale: Great, vintageable barleywine

Batch X Series: Many of these are legendary in the community

And they do styles that many other breweries won't even touch:

Wild One: A great wild ale

Lager of the Lakes/QFalls/Third Coast Beer/Consecrator: Great stable of lagers, most craft breweries don't even make lagers.

Intangibles: 1) They have one of the best bottle-dating formats in the industry (seriously Founder's, get it together here) 2) they are one of the only breweries to stick almost exclusively to 6pks, which usually provide the best value, 3) They always have a ton of interesting offerings in the brewpub, which is more than I can say for many MI brewers

09/18/2015 - 9:30am "Oregon beats M, and it's a blowout"?

Oregon certainly beats us on sheer number of craft breweries, and probably has better "little" guys, but it's definitely pretty close in terms of overall quality, and Michigan probably distributes more good beer to other states than Oregon.

As for some data, beer rating sites obviously have their flaws, but check the Top X lists on whatever site you choose (BA, RB, etc.) - Michigan is far better-represented than Oregon, and that's not nothing.

09/18/2015 - 9:25am Bell's?

Seriously?

For my money it's probably the best "big" craft brewery in the country. They do pretty much every style well.

09/04/2015 - 2:21pm Yeah. I'm on board with the

Yeah. I'm on board with the "down by 15, go for two after your first TD so you know what you need" thing, but I don't really see what getting within 6 accomplishes, as we were never gonna have time for two field goals.

It'll grow some hair on your chest.

09/02/2015 - 1:40pm I'll be there

I've been reading this blog daily for about 10 years now (over a third of my life!), and this will by my first ever MGoEvent. Excited to finally meet some of you bums.

I don't mind it, though I'd have to see it on a human before I'm sure. I certainly like the sentiment.

Those uniforms they're wearing against Army, on the other hand - those look terrible. You think the academies get tired of teams busting out these usually terrible "patriotic" jerseys when they come to town?

08/20/2015 - 8:19am Pumpkin beers man...woof. I

Pumpkin beers man...woof.

I drink a ton of different styles, fruity, malty, hoppy, whatever, but I've never found a pumpkin beer that was anything better than barely tolerable. Most of my drinking buddies feel the same. I've been shocked at how successful they've been the last 3-4 years.

Different strokes, man.
