It's a someone shady situation that's difficult to talk about, because while Title IX may or may not apply in this case (you'd basically have to go to court to find out), the policy in question is the school's Title IX policy.
So, to probably be the most accurate, this would be an investigation into a violation of the university's Title IX-related policy, but that's a mouthful and nobody's ever going to read through that whole sentence in a news article, so they shorten it, which introduces some ambiguity (and makes OSU fans feel like they're being unfairly targeted).

His great job at Vanderbilt is winning 24 games in 3 years. That's good, yes, but it's not powerhouse status.
His great job at Penn State has been a trip to the Big Ten Championship game that was mostly predicated on high-variance arm punts to very tall receivers (who are gone) followed by last year, which was built around RPOs designed by a great OC (who is gone) around a top-5 NFL draft pick RB (who is gone).
Nobody thinks PSU is suddenly going to go 3-9 this year, but I think a lot of people here would be less surprised if they went 8-4 than if they went 10-2.

|05/10/2018 - 8:57am||Personally, I don't think||
Personally, I don't think it's the case that the Lions and APG colluded to keep this information secret. There's no indication that the Patriots knew this about Patricia, either.
I think it's probably far more likely that NFL teams request only enough information from their background searches so that they can avoid any kind of real legal or PR culpability if something comes out. I don't think it's an accident that the Lions only specifically search for convictions, because I'm guessing that just about everyone only searches for convictions.
I'm guessing that most NFL teams do background searches looking only for things that can really hurt them. Which, regardless of how much noise this makes right now, it's likely that it won't have any lasting impact on the team; it'll get some conversation for a couple days and everyone will have forgotten by the time training camp opens.

She doesn't have to get "most high school boys" to play for her. It's CSU, not Duke, they're not recruiting five stars, and the expectations aren't national championships every year. She needs to get 3 or 4 decent basketball players per year to play for her.
I think you're pretty badly overestimating how much high school boys are going to care about being coached by a woman. Chances are, they've had a couple of women coaches before this point in their careers, and didn't care. And again, you don't need 40 players a year, she needs 3 or 4. I think she'd be fine.

|12/22/2017 - 10:56am||I'm just going off what I've||
I'm just going off what I've seen people writing about the venture, I don't think a more-violent football league is going to be a good or particularly marketable idea.
McMahon is 72 - I don't think he wants to mess around with a second-rate football league for 20 years before anyone starts to care about it; I'm also not convinced that a second-rate football league can truly survive. Arena Football already exists in the offseason and nobody really cares to watch it because (a) they don't care about any of the teams and (b) the games aren't nearly as good as college or the NFL. I don't think you could legally pull off a regional draft in a national sporting venture these days (it would seem to run afoul of the same rules that prohibited free agency).
The thing is, McMahon doesn't seem like a moron, he built the WWE basically from nothing. I'm just not sure what angle he sees that he really feels is going to get a sustainable league going, because the XFL wasn't, and Arena Football isn't (there are currently six total teams, and only three of them are older than 2 years old).

|12/22/2017 - 8:51am||Based on initial reports,||
Based on initial reports, McMahon believes that the market for the XFL is people who believe the NFL isn't violent enough, and also believe that it's bad that they don't force players to stand for the national anthem (EXPLICIT NOTE: I am NOT trying to start a national anthem conversation).
I'm not sure how well that's going to work (I think the market is quite a bit smaller than he thinks) and I think there's a really high barrier to taking fans from the NFL that they're going to have a seriously difficult time getting over, but it sounds like that's what they're going for.

Not only will companies not have loytalty to employees, but they will actively work to destroy incentives for keeping people around. Fifty years ago, someone might stick around a company because they had a pension and escalating vacation time and a prospect of promotion.
None of that exists any more. It's clear companies don't want people to stick around for 20 years. Why stay somewhere when it's clear you're not wanted?

|10/30/2017 - 3:24pm||The one thing I haven't seen||
The one thing I haven't seen with all the talk of Peters vs. O'Korn is that it's a lot more reasonable if Peters is bad to still be playing him, because he's an investment in the future. JOK is a fifth-year senior. Every snap with him in both practice and game time is lost going into next season; that's not true for Peters, who'll be back on campus barring something going spectacularly wrong. I don't expect Brandon Peters to turn into senior Tom Brady for the rest of the season, but I do expect him to be at least marginally better than Steven Threet level, which Peters was only occasionally (and not since Purdue). Additionally, when he makes a mistake, you hope he learns from it and grows, alongside the rest of this very young team.
In other words, if Peters gets worse, that's OK. We know he's not going to be a world-beater, yet. We hope that he can learn and grow from it and that next year, we're going to be better for it. John O'Korn wasn't ever going to make us better last year, and the point at which it was clear that this season wasn't likely to amount to silverware, replacing him with a guy who's got as good a chance to start next year as anyone made all the sense in the world.

If Michigan has a 15% chance to win each of the games you posted there (and with this defense, arguing that they have less than that to win any game is a real reach), then they have a 39% chance to win one of the three. That's much better than "effectively zero" chance to win 9 games (and in fact, S&P+ has them at a 31% chance to go 9-3, so I'm probably a bit optimistic).

I mean, they're not that far off. Structurally, they're different, but conceptually they attack gaps, squeeze the line and put guys on the outside in one-on-one matchups where you challenge the other team to beat you over the top in the limited time you have before the pass rush gets there.

|09/24/2017 - 5:31pm||Anything is fair game behind||
Anything is fair game behind the line of scrimmage, but defensive holding and pass interference can still be called less than five yards downfield - you can't tackle a guy two yards downfield; if you could that would be the best defense against any pass play.
|09/24/2017 - 4:48pm||I'm sure they probably will||
I'm sure they probably will adjust that rule...after this season, when it can't do us any good. Just like the Calvin Johnson rule, just like the illegal batting call by the Seahawks on Monday night, just like the pass interference no call on Ebron against the Cowboys in the playoffs, just like the Arian Foster "You can't throw a challenge flag on a play that would be automatically reviewed, therefore the touchdown stands" call. Just like the consecutive OPI calls against Eric Ebron last year when it was clear he didn't touch the defender that wound up being the difference between the Lions and Packers in the NFC North.
The Lions are the team that NFL refs learn to call a game on so that the NFL can figure out what not to do for teams they give a shit about.

|09/11/2017 - 12:43pm||If you take away Barrett's||
If you take away Barrett's one 74 yarder against IU (which was a short throw and a long run), he's 36-69 for 413 yards, 2 TDs and a pick through two games. That's 5.7 YPA - that would have ranked 12th out of 12 qualifying starters in the Big Ten last year - worse than even Wes Lunt.
You can say OSU fans are being irrational all they want, but they're getting bottom-of-the-barrell play out of their QB. That'll go back up some as they face less impressive defenses, but even last year he was only 8th in the Big Ten in YPA and it's not like he's going to get a ton better as a Senior.

|08/29/2017 - 1:22pm||For what it's worth, I don't||
For what it's worth, I don't think we're going to have head-scratching losses this year. That's one of the great things about Harbaugh - dude does not take anybody for granted, and neither do his teams. The closest things we've had to "I can't believe we didn't beat that team" losses since he's shown up were Utah on opening weekend in 2015 and Iowa last year. Those were both one-score losses in the other teams' stadiums at night.
The dude's teams just don't take weeks off. I think we'll lose some games, but I don't think they come out of anything but the four games that we've all got circled on the calendar as the biggest games of the year.
