06/20/2018 - 3:48pm Dude, straw man.
Crowell…

Dude, straw man.

Crowell does seem to have an itchy trigger when it comes to getting mad at Michigan. That high school coaches have preferences between state schools is hardly conspiracy. It's equally silly to imagine where your coach wants you to play is the only factor in where you play. Jermain Crowell could dislike Michigan. Crowell could try to sway players toward Michigan State. Crowell could still see plenty of his players go to Michigan, especially since it's so close to Ann Arbor. These things aren't mutually exclusive.

He used to work for Thomas Wilcher, and they maintain a strong relationship, but there's little doubt Wilcher likes to see his players go to Michigan, and many do, and some don't. You can want what is best for your players and be biased toward thinking what's best for them is to go to your school. It's okay. It happens. It's totally normal. Stop making a thing out of it.

06/20/2018 - 12:22pm I was going to do an all-Bo…

I was going to do an all-Bo team and was thinking about an all-Lloyd team, but that would screw us out of Moeller guys. And all-Moeller team is doable, but it's also basically saying "The 1991 team." Brian actually wrote an "of the decade" team at the end of the 2000s.

So what I've got outlined--and these are subject to change--for the rest of the offseason are:

  • All-Bo
  • All-'90s
  • All-Hype (busts and guys who get a ton of spring hype that amounts to nothing)
  • All-Name
  • All-Walk-On
  • All-Highlight (still deciding if it should be guy with the best highlight video or guy with the single greatest play we can find)
  • All-Tiny (best players from bottom 25% of ht/wt for their positions)
  • All-Huge (best players in top 25% of ht/wt for their positions)
06/20/2018 - 12:11pm I remember those…

I remember those recruitments well too but I'm going off of data from the extant recruiting rankers of the time. Rankings were nowhere near as precise as they are today, especially national ones, and the further back I go the more wobble there is in them. Also you'll note a lot of these guys came from the 3-/4-star borderline, because I already set the bar so low that MIKE HART was not eligible as a "3 star" under my criteria.

Rankings aren't a perfect method, but raw numbers are useful here when I've got a lot of guys to consider and "Was this guy highly sought after" is a moving target. There are lots of reasons for players to end up 3-stars: They're scouted late, play for smaller schools, have a hard ceiling, would have to completely reshape their bodies, etc. etc.

Tom Brady is a good example. He was no hidden gem, correct. He played at a huge school and was known nationally. But you are incorrect about the second bit: Michigan didn't "beat USC and UCLA for him." He would have gone to USC but USC got a commitment from their 5-star target, Quincy Woods, and for their second QB they were deciding between Brady and local 4-star John Fox, and while their OC (Mike Riley!) preferred Brady, and despite the fact that John Robinson was, like Tom Brady, a Serra alum, Robinson overruled Riley and took Fox. As for UCLA they took a commitment early (for those days) from Cade McKnown (and already had Ryan Fien and Rob Walker on campus) while Brady was waiting on USC, so UCLA was mostly out of the running by the time Brady was open to it, and Stanford already had commitments from two guys ranked right around Brady, and Michigan had already gotten Tom on campus for a visit. You can call that a 4-star or a 3-star. It was about where Malzone was.

I mentioned Winovich specifically was a stretch though so I could leave Frank Clark off.

06/19/2018 - 11:42pm I have to stick up for Gary…

I have to stick up for Gary because he was RAMPANT last year but the guys he chased just tended to end up in someone else's arms. And that's not a knock on Steele. I gave the 5-stars that point because they can rotate Gary AND Brandon Graham, two of the best to ever play the position here.

06/19/2018 - 7:00pm Did we watch the same Chad…

Did we watch the same Chad Henne? His junior season stands as the best by a Michigan quarterback since stats are comparable. He played his senior season injured, when he could, and was heroic when needed. Imagine that year with an MSU loss and no Citrus Bowl victory over Urban Meyer.

06/19/2018 - 6:55pm I said in the post I was…

I said in the post I was leaving Clark off for the off-field thing, or at least using it as an excuse to include one of my favorite players. Yeah I know I'm a real hero for sitting a guy off my imaginary squad.

06/19/2018 - 6:52pm 1998 was my freshman year…

1998 was my freshman year and I was spending a large amount of time at the Daily because I still imagined I could be a sportswriter that fall, and the Henson clarion was LOUD even then. Michigan lost at Notre Dame in the opener and Brady looked to our amateur eyes like a TD-2INT 3-star. After the game was out of hand Henson came in and immediately chucked us down the field, using the last 18 minutes or so to make the score respectable. The next game was Syracuse and again Brady played until the game was out of hand but Henson came in and even if he didn't complete 50% of his passes the ones he did complete were ropes all over the field.

Watch those two games not knowing what the future holds and see if you can't at least understand where we were coming from.

(also I was very 18).

I must both hate you and give you 10,000 MGoPoints for execution (for I am the pirate king).

06/19/2018 - 2:45pm How much of that was passing…

How much of that was passing sucked in NCAA 1998 and Vega was way too good at running back and forth with Henson while our blocky ass defenders dove the wrong direction?

06/19/2018 - 2:42pm That mostly affects 2 stars…

That mostly affects 2 stars who become 3 stars. Case in point: Casey Hughes the Utah Transfer remained an unscouted 2-star, while Vincent Gray's commitment to Michigan sparked a re-evaluation and he was placed in the solid 3-star range.

Today with 247 ranking into the thousands the three-star bump is much less of a thing. There used to be a lot more guys like Casey Hughes the Utah Transfer that nobody bothered to scout. Today crootin is a big business, the good players are more likely to hit camps and coalesce in a few power programs, and it's way easier to get tape on a guy.

In one week (not allowed to before then) we'll send out a form you can fill out with your address.

HTTV is late this year because we had the new site (both were primarily my projects) and you know what's been going on with Ace.

The search function is run by Google, and their bots are crawling our site as we speak, but they're going slowly because we limit that, otherwise it slows down the site. Could take weeks before we have a functional search function.

Googling "MGoBlog xxxx" in regular Google pulls up what they found on the old site.

06/17/2018 - 10:11am Michigan's non conf schedule…

Michigan's non conf schedule is tough because we wanted to play Notre Dame, and two mid majors wound up either on the comedown from a historic high (WMU) or on their way up (SMU). Is anyone second guessing that?

M also caught a tough West draw this year with Wisconsin, at Northernwestern and Nebraska, though we luckily got Nebraska at a historic low.

The one valid schedule complaint is the conference purposely screwed Michigan by moving MSU to the same home-road schedule as OSU. That was done for pique, specifically because they thought Dave Brandon was such a dick. That is proving really hard to undo; Indiana got M, MSU, and OSU on the same home-road schedule as a consequence so they're on our side, but we failed in the last round to get this fixed.

06/16/2018 - 5:27pm We discussed before launch…

We discussed before launch in Slack and concluded this is 3.0 because 1.0 and 2.0 were just different blogspot layouts.

The Internet Way Back Machine can show you the difference between the site (mgoblog.blogspot.com) in 2005 vs in 2007. Anyway we decided this version was indeed 3.0 because there have only been two major redesigns and both included a change in servers and how everything works.

MGoBlog 3.0: Less Board Posts & Comments

I want to encourage everyone to share their feedback on the new site so I have tried to let every thread go that wants to talk about it. That means there are plenty of threads for criticism whether it's constructive or not. This one could have been a comment in any of them. There are still enough board threads that we don't need to clog up the works with another thread just to complain that there are not enough threads.

There's no avatar with your account. Perhaps it was making me wistful having to stare at NoCal mountains where I want to be hiking instead of on a computer taking and jotting down complaints about a website.

Link the photo you want and I'll put it back in. Only thing I can guess is did you change it recently?

When you resize your window it changes between three modes: Desktop, Tablet, Mobile.

I want the "New" back too. I'm looking all over in the site configuration and I can't find it, which means it was a module or I suck at finding it. It's not high enough on the priority list yet that I can waste the programmers' time with it.

Being able to access profiles is something we're trying to add back once our security is strong enough. It's going to happen whenever the guy assigned to it gets back and says the problem is solved.

Another option I can't find in the site config and that was a module in Drupal 6.0. On the list, not high on the list.

I don't think it's hideous. I giggle every time I see it. We've gotten so good at being serious journalists lately sometimes it's refreshing to have a little bit of the irreverence of the old blog back in a place it doesn't matter.

06/14/2018 - 6:57pm Beilein's uncle Tom Niland…

Beilein's uncle Tom Niland was also a legendary basketball coach. Fritz Niland, the Private Ryan who was saved, was good friends in Tonawanda with Skip Muck of the "Band of Brothers"--there's an offhand reference to Fritz Niland in Band of Brothers, during the Battle of the Bulge, when Muck tells a story about swimming across the Niagara River on a dare from Fritz.

There's another, much closer Michigan connection in Band of Brothers. E Company Commander Moose Heyliger is the brother of Vic Heyliger, who was Michigan's hockey coach.

This is an issue happening to a lot of people and we're going to get into it.

06/13/2018 - 10:25pm I think that was a Drupal 6…
  1. I think that was a Drupal 6 module. If there's a way to do that in 8 we'll add it back of course. A lot of things ahead of that on the list right now.

  2. I noticed that too and it's on the list as something I want fixed quickly (because it doesn't seem like it should be too hard). That wasn't happening before launch by the way: it was setting you at your comment or if you were nested, in the comment you just replied to.

  3. That's Priority 1. We've been at that one hard and it's not an easy fix apparently.

  4. Brian is necessary for all that back-end stuff I don't know how to do, and he has other functions that really need to get taken care of. I'm trying to relay what I can because I'm on every call and at every meeting, because if we pulled Brian off to respond as often as we responses we wouldn't be getting things fixed (e.g. point #3)

  5. Apps are not that easy--we had them developed by users before and the problem was the developers cared about making their apps work great but not about how that was messing with the site. Remember when the site was going offline all the time and we had to add cloudflare to curttail it, and it was slow as balls? That turned out to be the damn apps. We are leaning toward developing those in-house now. We almost certainly will not be relinquishing control again.
06/13/2018 - 10:18pm Given the feedback on an app…

Given the feedback on an app we're leaning toward developing one. The problem with the old apps is they didn't care if they slowed down the site to make sure your phone was always up to date, and that would kill our traffic.

06/13/2018 - 10:16pm That's high on the priority…

That's high on the priority list. Will happen once we can for security purposes. HUEL remarked today there are an extraordinary amount of bad guys trying to mess up our site.

06/13/2018 - 10:13pm Thanks. That's a weird issue…

Thanks. That's a weird issue. I'll add it to the list.

06/13/2018 - 10:11pm Thanks. I think you're right…

Thanks. I think you're right about that and that was a big reason I wanted a background. There were some frame issues that had to get resolved and when it was too big a project it went into the post-launch bin.

06/13/2018 - 9:27pm One of the pre-launch musts…
  • One of the pre-launch musts on my list was embedding tweets, videos from youtube, and gifs from the WYSIWYG. When we went to do this, the module for this version wanted a bazillion dollars a month for our readership size. So we're looking at ways to build that in-house. For now posting into the source code works.

  • Most posters are lurkers who care more about longform content than the board. But I think shortening the diaries area is a good idea.

  • The voting isn't behaving like it's supposed to. I mentioned it lower down there's a module problem. I just checked the setting again after I posted that comment and voting should tally in realtime. Known bug, not the top bug right now.

  • Comments jump: noted, added to list

  • I just went in to see if I could enable editing posts and there's no intermediate option like we used to have. We don't want readers editing posts after they're replied to and there's a security issue in turning that on so this might take awhile to fix.

  • Ironic considering we aped a lot from SBNation.

  • Eventually background will be a thing. It's going to take a big design tweak to not make that look bad (we tried it and were like "CHANGE IT BACK CHANGE IT BACK" so that's another thing lower down the list.

  • How so: weird?

  • Don't forget.

In general understand we were on Drupal 6 before, and were on that for a decade, so a lot of things got tweaked just how we want them, and a lot of functions you took for granted were written by some geek in 2007 and never picked up again. We HAD to get off Drupal 6 because the site wasn't going to be able to stay up much longer and nothing was supported anymore. I remember being around in 2008 when we went to 2.0--a stable site with everything working doesn't happen quickly.

06/13/2018 - 9:18pm I made a line in our list of…

I made a line in our list of things to do that was "DO WHATEVER THIS GUY SAYS."

Some of these are things I was pointing out pre-launch but at that point little things that take longer than a few seconds to tweak were put aside.

06/13/2018 - 9:15pm The log-in bug is our top…

The log-in bug is our top priority. It's also proving very difficult to solve. been at it for 2 days and other bug fixes are piling up behind it.

06/13/2018 - 9:14pm I use the same user…

I use the same user interface, except I have some more buttons available. And we all created users of every level to test things out. Can you be specific with what's not working in the interface?

06/13/2018 - 9:08pm Hold control when your mouse…

Hold control when your mouse is over "MGoBoard"

This was a concession to mobile, where clicking on a header can't be both a link and a menu option. But I hotlinked them all anyway because I like having those quick links. Just hold control.

06/13/2018 - 9:02pm I don't know why this is but…

I don't know why this is but you're not the only one. Listen, I'll get this fixed but for right now I'm leaving you unfixed so the devel team can check this out. Hang in there; we'll make it up to you.

06/13/2018 - 8:52pm The points system is a…

The points system is a module written by a guy who doesn't put much work into it (on the old site we used a different and better one but that's discontinued). So we're paying to have a new module written but it wasn't going to be ready with the site. For the time being points are counted but they don't appear right away.
