Mike- You are not alone! Played since 6th grade at 4 years as a lineman at the D3 level. Anxiety, depression, mood swings and memory loss have been a visible part of my life for the last 8 years.....I'm only 36. This could just be "me" but I have some suspicions it has a lot to do with football. So sad because this awesome game built in me so many positive traits: confidence, team work, accountability, work ethic, etc. I have 3 little girls....if I had boys, they would be be playing.

A mentor of mine who is close to the program (played at UofM from '73-76') and has ties to Stanford said that Harbaugh is not the head case the media makes him out to be. That combined with another friend who worked grounds for the Colts' summer camps, said he was a very good guy. Word on the street is that Hensley his SF assistants go on date nights while he watches their kids. I don't beleive these are fabrications so I'm not too worried about his character.
|11/03/2014 - 2:50pm||We already have this......||
"If he decided to go to college, there are absolutely no athletic scholarships. He goes to get his degree, and there is no financial incentive whatsoever to play football (or any other sport). These students are 100% students, and the school's athletic teams are truly, purely created from the men and women who choose to attend that school. To me, this sounds like the legendary days of football yore. The quality of football would never be as good as it is today, but the sense of identity to the men on the field would, in my opinion, be strengthened. Students would watch the games and cheer on their classmates; alumni would think "that could have been me out there battling for my school!"
It's called Division III. As a 3-year letterman in football for a DIII school, this sums up my experience.

I'm sure I sound like a jerk, but I just dropped my brother in law off at Gerald r Ford Int. and drove back to Holland at about 65. I am fortunate enough to have AWD so it is an advantage, but we are more used to the crappy conditions because of the more frequent snowfall(it seems we've had measurable snow over here everyday since Thanksgiving), like Clarence said. I did laugh at the 40mph comment. NOT because I'm some cool, awesome, snow-driving showboat, but because it's my take that driving that slow is just as dangerous. Neg away you east-siders!
In my defense, I was passed by a honda civic.

He will be corrected for not taking a more downhill path on that pull. If he does this then he meets the tackler at a better point of attack and allows Fitz to see the hole quicker. But for goodness sakes, that is knitpicky for the first game! He showed some great footwork!

|01/11/2013 - 12:48am||Recent blog article||
Here is a blog article that I found on MGoBlog and found the facts to be interesting. Lineman had a much higher rate of collisions, therefore exposing them to a greater chance of brain damage. If you were to ask me who I thought would be the most damaged I would have said DB's and LB's.
|01/11/2013 - 12:41am||Exactly||
This thread represents what's great about the Internet. Many opinions and some good discussion. People who can't see this as a valid discussion don't understand what football can do for you personally. We are losing great men for a reason that can be directly connected to something we can change.
|01/11/2013 - 12:18am||Personal Input||
I haven't chimed in on the blog in awhile but I am so passionate about this subject that I feel the need tonight.
Personal story time so skip if you think it might be lame. I am a 33 year old man who started playing football in 5th grade and ended after a 4-year career at a small DIII school here in Michigan. I was a 3-year letterman and played those three years on the line. I recently have battled a bought of depression, mood-swings and memory loss, although the memory loss has been a longer issue than depression or mood-swings. The depression has required meds, but the funny thing is that I have what one would call a perfect life. Smokin' hot and smart wife who is the bread-winner, fulfilling job, two beautiful and healthy kids and not much debt other than student loans and a mortgage.
Depression happens for many reasons but it really does not run in my family and again, I have no reason to hate life or be disinterested. I have always been a jovial guy but over the last year or so my moods have swung. Like previously stated, my memory has always been weak but I have always chalked that up to being lazy about details.
What I am getting at is that I believe this Jr. Seau thing is no joke. The game we love, play, and worship needs to change. I don't want to lose this beautiful sport. I learned 95% about being a husband, father and man on the football field with my coaches and teammates. However, we have baby #3 on the way and if it is a boy(other two are girls), I will not let him play football. That kills me to write, but something needs to change.
Again, I may not have CTE and what we know about it is very little, but you are lying to yourself if you think collisions in the game of football aren't damaging to the brain.
If there are any Dr.'s out there that would like to use my brain for scans I would be more than happy to donate my time and energy to help the progression of education with CTE and other collision related brain diseases. I would, however, prefer the procedure where you can keep me alive.

|09/23/2012 - 12:23pm||Sharp||
Was that Sharp asking the last question to Denard? Whoever it was, what a douche! One of the best talents we have ever seen, of course much if not all of the offense is going to rely on him....he does touch the ball every play. That is as short as I've ever seen Denard and I thought he handled that stupid ass question with grace.
|09/19/2012 - 9:08am||Prediction||
|09/03/2012 - 12:43pm||It gets better||
I am almost 33 with a 7yo and 4yo. Having a child takes the edge off but the loss and game plan still leave a bad taste in your mouth. But you do realize that there IS more to life than Michigan football.
My theory on the game plan is that while you play to win every game, this was a lose lose from about the first offensive possession. I think Borges put the cards away early and decided not to do anything stupid, panic and throw the kitchen sink at them once the writing was on the wall. Yes, that sounds like giving up but there are 11 very important games left.
|08/31/2012 - 4:31pm||I appreciate this post today||
Thanks for the transparency and GO BLUE! It will be refreshing to say the least, to see the boys come running out onto that field.

Snooooooozer, unless you were 7 and it was your first time in the Big House! Jamie Morris ripped off a huge run after his shoe was pulled off. That is my one big memory from the game. It was with my cousin, Dad and grandfather so it was a special time.
|11/18/2011 - 12:51pm||It's Friday....||
So I have a little spare time. I watched that play again about 10 times and noticed that this is a very arbitrary argument I have with Brian's assessment. I think we need to agree that the D-lineman just got one over on us there. Huyge really doesn't have the time to wait(so I can't blame him) but he could have thrown out his left meat hook and helped. It looks almost if he would have had to take a step left and that is a no no.
We are blessed to have a blog like this to have this very conversation. Thanks Brian for what you do around here!
|11/18/2011 - 9:12am||Brian,||
After watching the Shaw bouncebouncederp video where you point out Omameh failed at his assignment, 40% of this plays failure needs to fall on Huyge. Huyge needs to get a left hand on him and set him up a little before he goes to the second level. It looks like the DT is heads up so that is why it is 60% on Patrick, but he did slant playside and that backer was not way out. Huyge could still have gotten to his assignment and been effective while helping Omameh get under the DT. If you watch Molk, he was ready to get under Omameh's guy but didn't have a chance. It's like a ripple effect in that blocking scheme. If one guy fails a little it all breaks down. The way the play unfolded, Molk was essentially a wasted blocker, unless Shaw cuts back. If Huyge gets the DT set up, Omameh gets under him and hands him to Molk. Huyge then has given himself a better chance at kicking out that LB.....Omameh can then scrape up to the ML had he not blitzed.

|11/10/2011 - 1:59pm||Point Taken||
Howeva, why the heck would JUB fudge something like that? This has been re-hashed and re-hashed but what does he gain by documenting innacuracies about Carr and his beloved program?(other than $$$, which is powerful...but his integrity is more important....I would think....but then I thought JoePa had a ton of integrity before Monday)
I hear ya though, and I've tried to take that book with a grain of salt.

One of three tid-bits that changed my perspective of Coach Carr. Sad panda.

You are absolutely correct. I didn't even think about that. I'm with you though, I am more frustrated after reading it.

Will be interesting to compare who was shocked by what around these parts. There is one person in this book who I have had a complete 180 on.(from good to bad)

|10/01/2011 - 1:25am||WTF Brian!?||
It's times like this I wish I didn't check my Twitter at 1:15am of gameday. Scared me. Good to see it is only a bandage and not a sling. Glad for him and us fanatics.

GOSH DANG, I really want this team to win a championship! What is not to love about them!? Sorry, got a little emotional there.
|09/30/2011 - 12:02pm||I have to side with the minority around here||
For me, football and RAWK go hand in hand. It doesn't work with hip-hop, indie or country.*(some work but not as well as Rrock) I grew up in the mid 90's with AC/DC playing in our lockerroom along with a good dose of GnR mixed with some Scorpions. I would much rather hear a newer version of some rock that is taylored to our Wolverines versus TNT...oy..oy..oy.
The song is not that bad. For how that band looks, it could be a lot worse.
*Funny enough 09 and 10's hype videos were Indie and Hip-Hop. Hip-hop is probably my favorite genra and the Hype Video for 2010 is by FAR my favorite. However, during a game for adernaline reasons, I think rock works the best....seems to bring out the mean. Hip-Hop brings out the swaggar.
Just cause I like it and I am too lazy to imbed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CG5XGeB-84

Great work Johnny!
|09/15/2011 - 3:28pm||ND by 2 TD's||
They are capable of scoring 45 points a game if they don't turn it over 26 times. State will be shell shocked. Just like us(yes, we were, admit it).......but ND will not give the ball away and MSU doesn't have DenardX!
|09/11/2011 - 7:31pm||EDIT||
It was after his 1st pick.....but who cares. What a fun win!
|09/11/2011 - 3:30pm||Brian-||
I hate to be that guy but your shot of Denard(second picture) was in a moment of pure frustration for him....not excitement. Your sequence would mean to show it as a good feeling picture when it was actually the exact opposite....I think after his 3rd pick. The only reason I know that is because I turned to my brother and told him that I have never seen Denard react that negatively before.(look at Hopkins' eyes...he is clearly worried)
I know this could be looked at as trolling, but I just want to keep the high levels of journalistic integrity here.
|09/09/2011 - 1:55pm||Garage Sale||
Mrs. Route66 and I will be selling our childrens clothes and toys in the am then I will be heading over to watch my Hope Flying Dutchmen play Wiscconsin Lutheran at 1:30. Follow that up with some football on TV and then gametime! I should mow the lawn sometime in there. Ahh, the life of a 30-something in suburban America.
|09/04/2011 - 2:28pm||Watch it again||
Denard had to get it over the LB or whoever was raising their arms. This was the reason Koger got hung out.
|09/04/2011 - 2:06am||Big difference||
There is a diff between RR wanting the kid to get better and BK telling a kid that he is an effing loser.

A nice treat from my Brother. I will also note that it is my daughter's birthday tomorrow and she will be 3. I told her that tomorrow it gets better as a Michigan fan*. She has lived through just about as many losses in her lifetime as I have in mine.
Do not misconstrue this as a RR bash. I wish he was still here.......as an offensive coordinator.

That is all.
|08/29/2011 - 11:45pm||Thanks for the perspective||
Thanks for throwing that in. This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: "Thanks. Hey, I guess they're right. Senior citizens, although slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose. I'll be right back. Don't you go dying on me!"
