05/16/2018 - 5:01pm Confession time:

Sometimes, when our biggest rivals play in big games against out-of-conference schools, a part of me wants to see them win.

It only stems from wanting our SOS/resume to be as difficult as possible (and ultimately for our benefit). I'm not proud of it, but a lot of times it's how I feel when watching the games.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let's just go halfsies on a dozen and call it a day.

05/16/2018 - 2:49am If he's 5'11" and ending his

If he's 5'11" and ending his Junior year in HS, I'd bet dollars to donuts he'll be 6' by college.

05/03/2018 - 2:53pm The second best player on

The second best player on Edmonton is Leon Draisaitl no questions asked. Agree with you on the Edmonton defense though. McDavid's faster and flashier than Crosby. But cups aside, if you watch Crosby, the thing that separates him from McDavid is his smart play, hand-eye coordination, and positioning. He creates goals out of absolutely nothing.

05/03/2018 - 2:21pm Last year Connor Sheary

Last year Connor Sheary played on a line with Crosby for a good portion of the season. He ended up with 53 points in 61 games. This year he got bumped down to the third line and finished with 30 points in 79 games. Each player has worked hard to get to where they're at, but if you don't think Crosby is the one elevating everyone else's play you're being a loony. :)

05/03/2018 - 2:08pm I hated Crosby after those

I hated Crosby after those two Stanley Cup Finals vs. the Wings. But man as time has gone on, it's hard to dislike the guy. He's one of the best in the world and a class-act off the ice. Some fun stories below showing how genuine and sincere of a guy he is:

With that said, I'd hate to see the Penguins win three straight. Go Caps!

03/22/2018 - 5:32pm I actually think it'd be

I actually think it'd be super fun to play both VT and Washington in the same season. One could have an off year; but if they're both good, AWESOME. We'll have the most respectable and toughest schedule in the NCAA. 1 or even 2 losses (in the first 6 six games) + winning out and a Big Ten Championship would definitely put us in contention for the playoff.

If one of these two series are canceled I'll be bummed.

It was my first time in Missoula about a month ago. LOVELY PLACE.

11/07/2017 - 7:40pm Mississippi State

Good to see Mississippi State stay at 16 after a quality win against Massachusetts.

10/31/2017 - 7:34pm In the grand scheme of things…
Even though Michigan isn’t ranked, it’s good to have some perspective. Take USC (2016) for example: they had 3 losses at this point in the year and missed out on the first rankings. They made a QB change after their losses, got hot, and eventually made it to #9 post-championship week, and they didn’t even play in their conference championship game.

WHAT IF (and that’s a big “if”) something similar happens to Michigan? Where this switch to Peters sparks the offense and we take sizable victories over Minnesota and Maryland, eventually taking down Wiscy and OSU, our resume would have one less loss than USC and our victories would be of similar quality (Wisconsin & OSU vs. Colorado & Washington).

Who knows what can happen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
10/31/2017 - 4:39pm Good points

You're right, we have no quality wins. Was hoping IU would run the table and make our OT win look a little nicer but no.

No matter between Stanford and WSU, we'll probably be ahead one and behind another next week since they play each other on Saturday. And LSU should lose to Bama so hope they get routed and we're close enough to pass em by next week. :)

10/31/2017 - 2:08pm I'm with you.

Agree on WSU. I also think we should be ahead of LSU (losses: Troy and Miss St.) and Stanford (losses: SDSU, USC, and last second win vs. a VERY BAD Oregon St. last week). In their defense, they were missing Love, but looked absolutely awful.

Overall, I feel like we've been treated a little unfairly with our drop in the polls via the MSU loss and IU OT win (who had a decent non-conference W over Virginia), but especially when compared to Stanford and WSU's past few weeks. Nevertheless, our resume sucks too so it's whatevs.

10/24/2017 - 10:02am FWIW - Red Wings

FWIW, I've subscribed solely on the basis for quality Red Wings reporting, and can honestly say their coverage is 100x better than the local diggers. The team they've assembled makes for far better reads, and discuss questions and topics fans actually want to read about. I'm actually seeing articles which question Ken Holland and some of his moves the past few years, which if you follow the Wings, you know the local writers are a little lazy and have written like they're in a bubble (they all write about the same topics, at the same times, and tend to resist criticizing the organization). The Athletic covered the Athanasiou situation better than anyone, and had a lot of updates close to both camps, including tidbits and thoughts of other GMs across the league on trade value and how they see AA as a player (though only anonymously).

09/24/2017 - 5:00pm TWIST

New twist ya'll. Even IF his knee was down, and even IF it was conclusive to change the call on the field, there were 11 seconds left on the clock when Tate was "down", which the refs should've readjusted the game clock to. So with math... WE'D HAVE ONE SECOND FOR A SNAP.

08/28/2017 - 3:35pm Don't get all this fuss. JUST THINK...

If we practiced in them today, they're our practice jerseys. In 2017, we play our best in practice jerseys. Transitive property, we play our best on Saturday. Duh.

08/10/2017 - 3:20pm Thanks/Correction

Thanks M Ascending! Though I didn't see this quiz yesterday, it was fun to read along. Good work!

One slight correction, and I didn't see anybody mention this, but I think only 4 out of our last 7 bowl games have come against SEC opponents. Since 2008, we've played FLA 2x, Mississippi State, and SC; opponents outside of the SEC have been FSU, Kansas State, and VT. Anyway, thanks again!!

10/17/2016 - 5:31pm Big Ten on Fox

Kind of off this topic, but since we are talking about TV contracts I thought it would apply... But does anyone know when we should expect Big Ten games to air on Fox? Is it only the Big Ten championship game Fox gets? Or will they get regular season games down the road?

10/13/2016 - 4:11pm Forget about Weiss*

Stephen Weiss, who we bought out last summer, is also on our books for the next 5 years.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10/13/2016 - 4:06pm I felt depressed just writing it... haha

BUT THANK YOU!

10/13/2016 - 4:04pm Hahaha

I very much appreciate that story. :D

Honestly, if he stays on that last line I'll be okay with it too. It bothered me more when Smith was getting scratched (or given minimal ice time) while they still considered Ericsson and Kronwall a top pair. I know a lot of people don't really like Smith, but his offensive upside and advanced stats show he's one of our best defenders. That being said, I'm excited for the Smith - Green combo!

Anyway, Ericsson has just declined so much (IMO) over the last two years, and to piggy-back on what you're saying, I almost feel like his pay is what's keeping him in the lineup. I'd rather see Hicketts at this point, but that goes back to the whole youth movement thing. Haha.

10/13/2016 - 3:39pm Thanks!

I'm totally with you on all that! Ericsson's on the last defensive line for tonight, so maybe he gets benched when Kronwall comes back? But it'll probably be Ouelett who is the odd man out when Kronwall returns. You're right though, Ericsson shouldn't even be on the roster. lol

10/13/2016 - 3:25pm Prashanth Iyer

Yes, I loved this piece. For those guys on twitter looking for a great Wings reference, Prashanth Iyer (@iyer_prashanth) is a must follow; he's the one who wrote the article. Great stuff!

10/13/2016 - 3:13pm Ken Holland = Very Bad

Over the last few years, Holland has signed wayyyyy too many long term contracts. We are overly loyal, and for the first time in my lifetime, I don't believe we'll make the playoffs. Some of our current long-term contracts include...

Abdelkader = 7 more years (29 years old)
Nielsen = 6 more years (32 years old)
Zetterberg = 5 more years (36 years old; slowing down)
Helm = 5 more years (29 years old)
Glendening = 5 more years (27 years old; 4th liner)
Ericsson = 4 more years (32 years old; plays like he's 40 though)
Franzen = 4 more years (36 years old; basically retired due to injuries)
Howard = 3 more years (32 years old)
Kronwall = 3 more years (35 years old; really slowed down)

We let our youthful talent stew in Grand Rapids without having room to even give them a shot due to logjams created by Holland year after year with consistently bad, offseason signings. When you give up on players like Nestrasil, Frk, Pulkkinen, Janmark (for Erik Cole), Jarnkrok (for Legwand) without them playing a TOTAL of 83 games (13 for Nestrasil and 70 for Pulkky), it demonstrates we give up on our prospects way too soon. All those prospects are on other NHL rosters right now. Why pay players like Ott and Miller, when you can save assets and utilize the affordability of entry level contracts?? The 4th line should be used as an opportunity for the young guys to get experience and grow with smaller time on ice.

Not to mention poor player usage. Glendening averaged more time on ice than Tatar last year  and Athanasiou only averaged 9:01 per game and rarely used on the penalty kill. AA is benched and Mantha is in GR to start this season, and they should both be in the top 6.

Not optimistic here. But GO WINGS.

10/13/2016 - 3:13pm BRING STEVIE BACK

Before Stevie Y left for TB, they wanted to promote KH and give Yzerman the GM position. And Holland declined... :(

http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2016/4/23/11493464/report-ken-holland-…

IMO, just play the young guys and see what happens. If we tank, we tank. But I think we'd be surprised how well we'd do with Athanasiou, Larkin, Mantha, Tatar, Nyquist, Bertuzzi, Jurco and Svenchnikov in the lineup. We have talent for sure, just not utilized.

10/13/2016 - 3:05pm I do like Frans, but...

Nielsen is a really nice player, and I think he'll be great for us for the next 2 or 3 years. But we signed him for 6 years. He's 32 right now, so I definitely think the second half of his contract will put us in a bind a few years down the road... :(

09/27/2016 - 3:35pm Nice pic(k)!

Go blue! And gotta say, lovin' that red panda pic you got there.

09/27/2016 - 10:41am Signed up!

Thanks Ghost, I took a spot. I've been looking for a keeper hockey league for a while, so I'm super excited to join!

09/16/2016 - 7:15pm 12th Team (if needed)

I don't want to join and bring your league total to an odd number. But if you were to have an 11th team in place, I'd gladly join as the 12th!!
