The excerpt posted suggested that statistic, but the screenshot removes important context.  Specifically, the top of screenshot describes Notre Dame's Covid response to the outbreak, the next paragraph (including the 60 death figure) is not specific to Notre Dame, although the screenshot hides the page break and context that would make that evident. In the attached source material (NY Time 9/11/20), the statistic is referenced as the number of deaths attributed to college outbreaks across the nation:

A New York Times survey of more than 1,600 American colleges and universities — including every four-year public institution, every private college that competes in N.C.A.A. sports and others that identified cases — has revealed at least 88,000 cases and at least 60 deaths since the pandemic began.

Yes, they do. They had a…

Yes, they do have students on campus. They had a spike in cases after the first week which was traced to an off-campus party. They switched from in-person to online only classes for two weeks but did not send students home. The two week period ended Sept 2nd, at which time the Covid infection rate had slowed significantly and they resumed in-person classes.

I know this because my daughter is a junior there. The ND transparency with the parents and publishing daily results has been very good. I appreciate their perseverance rather than sending kids home for the semester. The school president, Fr. Jenkins wrote an article on May 26th in the New York Times. If you're looking beyond the oratorically brilliant and timeless 'to hell with Notre Dame' comments, then evaluation of how ND is performing to the President's stated goals would be interesting. I think it showed leadership to take a controversial position and state its justifications at a relatively early point. Time will tell if it was the correct decision, but comparisons to the B1G handling of the football cancellation are apt.

He would have to sit out a year, but after that would still have 3 years to play is my understanding.

2016 - Played @ Cal

2017 - Played 3? games, was granted a medical redshirt

2018 - Transfer year will use his redshirt year

Assuming he doesn't get turn pro early, he would still have 3 years of eligibility beginning in 2019 season.

ND offensive line may not be a tire fire

Yes, Losing two first round offensive lineman is a huge loss for ND's offensive line, but the likely starting five include two full time starters in Sam Mustipher (starting center for last two years) and Alex Bars (starting RG all of 2017 and significant contributor in 2016).

Furthermore, ND split right tackle duties pretty evenly between RS FR Tommy Kraemer and true FR Robert Hainsey.  That position share was much more a case of getting reps for two equal and talented players than searching for something that works.  Both are projected starters this year with a decent amount of seasoning from last year.  The likely fifth starter is Liam Eichenberg. He was expected to be a significant contributor last year but was surpassed by the freshman Hainsey.  ND line will have a few veterans and three young players with a lot of potential.  However, their young players have either not seen action behind good players or have acquitted themselves well in reduced time.

If Notre Dame is cheating in basketball... ...they're doing it wrong.

0 in the last 4?

Didn't Bama win 2 years ago in Bama vs. Clemson, Round One?

The 7s world cup is also

The 7s world cup is also hosted in San Francisco next summer, so there's time.

My two cents

It would be interesting to see how he could do in Rugby 7s where the field has a lot more room to operate. (I see very little chance to succeed in the traditional 15s game at a high level)

The experiment is not without precedent as Carlin Isles (AKA - the fastest man in rugby) has had a modicum of success at the international level.  Denard would bring a shiftiness that I imagine would make him a similar threat to score every time he touches the ball.

The negative for Carlin would also hold true for Denard - he would be a definite liability every where else on the field due to his lack of rugby knowledge and tackling ability (rugby tackling is one of the most demanding and underestimated skills in any sport).  I am of the opinion that USA 7s national team is better without Carlin Isles (my Denard comparison) on the field.  Although he makes the game exciting when he does get the opportunity, good international teams can compensate with defensive scheme and exploit the mismatches that a poor defender / skilled rugby player creates for their offense.

Speed, Endurance, Tackling

As a rugby coach, I would answer that 7's main requirements are:

1) speed

2) rugby skill

3) endurance

4) tackling

The substitution rules are like soccer in that it is very limited.  A half of 7s rugby is basically a 10 minute sprint with an Oklahoma drill every 45 seconds.  Given that you have to do that for two halves and typically play more than one game a day, it doesn't really fit your defensive lineman body types.  Safeties, linebackers, tight ends, and a few pure speed guys (Denard would remind me of Carlin Isles, the 'fastest man in rugby')

People underestimate the importance of rugby knowledge in 7s.  There have been many attempts by great athletes to transition to rugby that have failed because their lack of experience makes them a liability on the international stage.  Interesting counterpoints are Carlin Isles who was a D3 track and football player but then dedicated himself to rugby (and is still considered weak in rugby skills) and Nate Ebner, who plays a reserve linebacker role for the Patriots and was a walk-on at Ohio State.  However, he was a high school rugby star before he even decided to try football at Ohio State.

How about bringing back the How about bringing back the dropkick goal? I've seen some pretty amazing Aussie rugby dropkicks from midfield. Much tougher with a football but would love to see it tried.
Definitely watching

This event has rapidly climbed my list of sports functions I want to attend.  Won't be going this year because the Michigan high school rugby championships are Saturday.  The competitions in the CRC were rightly criticized the first few years for lacking competitive balance due to 'name' schools getting invited over schools that are good at rugby (Bowling Green / Davenport / Life are examples) but the event has actually helped raise the sport profile and competitiveness at name schools while also allowing more pathways for the competitive teams such as Life, Arkansas St, and Kutztown.

I will be going

I am looking forward to being at this game.  I will say that Stinson Field is a very nice facility.  It is an artificial turf field dedicated to rugby use, very rare in the US.  As a former player and a current rugby coach, I can say that it is probably the nicest rugby facility this side of Glendale, Colorado.

Huzzah!

Thanks for the nerd porn.  Excellent analysis.

Nice analysis

Any idea how the Clemson and Tulane offenses fit this metric?

Please. . .

. . .no Rodriguez to Custer comparisons.

Vegas likes home field advantage

What these lines say to me is that Vegas seriously values home field advantage.  The three most favorable spreads are all on the road. I'd take all 3 road games and bet that we beat the spread on at least 2 of 3.

Not for boxing

Indiana prohibits scalping specifically for boxing matches only.  However, at ND, the area around the stadium is private property and scalping above face value is prohibited by the ND campus police.  Violation will get you kicked off the property and prevent future ticket buying rights.  Most people who sell near the stadium will do it at face value or discreetly because they don't want to lose their season ticket privileges.

My thoughts

My experience is that you can usually get tickets prior to the game (even without scalpers) by just going to ND stadium.  A certain number of people hoard tickets and most of ND's fan base hase to travel to get there - not many people make the long trip without having a ticket.  It usually results in a fair number of tickets getting sold right before game time when the hoarders realize all their friends have tickets already.  Getting 4 together would be the problem - also helps if you wear something over your M gear.
