I am following this more…

I am following this more than I should.  Two seemingly contradictory things seem evident: 1) we need to be very careful and vigilant and 2) this virus seems quite containable and is way overhyped.

  • The cruise ship provides some reasonable bounds on mortality rate and spread.  While all cases have not cleared, a mortality rate no higher than 1.0% seems likely (especially given the average age of cruise passengers).
  • As a follow-up, S. Korea, which currently has the best testing (well maybe second to Germany) is observing not only a lower than 1% mortality rate but a small number of serious and critical cases.  Germany has yet to record a death with 500 positive cases due to aggressive canvasing.
  • Social distancing, containment strategies, and community awareness are necessary but seem to be working well.  If you look at S. Korea (which is not imposing nearly as aggressive quarantining as China), they have a fixed number of new cases per day for the last week.  This is not what you would expect from an exponential growth model.
  • If you think the preceding point has sampling bias issues, look at the death rate everywhere.  Many countries are not observing exponential increases per day.  Presumably much higher numbers of dead people would be noticed even if testing failed.

While the long incubation period presents challenges for quarantining, my guess is that it is helping government officials aggressively contain known contacts.  Of course some patients get missed.  But it is slowing it down enough.

We need to take all pre-cautions to beat this virus, and it is potentially very dangerous, even if the mortality rate is "only" 0.3%.  But assuming countries, like the US, can get more testing online, the combination of summer likely weakening the virus (or strengthening the average person's immune system) and containment will stop this virus from being out of control.

Good pocket awareness

Peters seemed to have good awareness.  A few tacosocks throws though.

simple actually

Purdue is not a good D.  When a backup comes in they have a nothing to lose attitude.  I think Sp8 has gotten too conservative which is an issue and might be the only difference betwen them.

If O'Korn is better (now) than Sp8 because he is struggling (and assuming Harbaugh has seen this too), then it might also suggest that Sp8's upside is much better and Harbaugh is hoping for that to return.  Sp8 had better games last year against much better teams than Purdue.

That said, I agree that O'Korn has deserved a chance.  I just think, as a community, we over-react to the latest datapoint.

Well...

I might go with O'Korn because Sp8 seems shaken but I think we are over reacting to a horrible Purdue D.  O'Korn is bad at feeling pressure and holds on to the ball too long.  This might work okay against Purdue but I suspect Sp8 is in to limit interceptions (though he does love untimely pick 6s).  Given the ineptness of the rest of our offnense, I am fine with O'Korn to shake things up but we should not get carried away.

O'Korns sacks are like Sp8s over throws.  I would rather have the over throws.

impressive

Impressive performance but this blog is nuts some times.  Purdue has one of the worst D's in the country.  O'Korn struggled in the past (like last year in his only start) feeling pressure.  He ate a lot of sacks against a bad Purdue D and holds on to the ball too long.  O'Korn might be better than Sp8 but I think we are all over-reacting.

Also, Purdue is the type of team you want to be riskier with your offense because their D is bad.  It seems pretty obvious that Sp8 is in to avoid making errors like interceptions, which he doesn't throw too often (except for pick 6s at inopportune times).

Big difference from Borges

I like how Mattison answered questions directly.  Rather than speaking in platitutes, he gave specific areas where he failed as a coach.  He also seems to be actively exploring whether pressuring more (with this personnel) is a good idea, i.e., he is not set in his ways.

well...

we had a good run ... I actually though through the first 3 we actually played slightly better .. exepting all our boneheaded turnovers.  still proud of the guys

Nice makeup with that bad missed elbow call

bad time

bad time for howard to give up a weak one

wow media

they are really trying to cover their butts if chicago loses...they are butt broken that their team is not necessarily playing better than the wings.

well

that's what I get for taking the first word spelled off of google...google doesn't know what I need!  Former spelling bee champ embarrassed :)

of course

of course the media thinks it was a bad call they are on crack.

time to get the defibulator

but this game is ending early ... too much talent and sloppy play on both sides

oh but wait!!!

ha refs got it right !!

damnit

we had momentum too ... still some time

like the aggressiveness but

we can't over pinch

laying the pride out

man datsyuk there

zetterburg

zetts is not missing that!

goal!!!

way to fight back

there is a chance!

we are not playing well enough to win outright but we are not necessarily playing bad enough to guarantee defeat.  Play hard to the puck, earn a bounce or two, and we got it.

starting to play with more edge

too bad the period ended ...started to play with a little more edge toward the end of that period.  Let's return the favor Chicago gave us in the third period last

LA

I don't like LA but I like to see them pound Chicago in the ground in the event that we lose today.  Shaw would be one of their b**ches

Shaw gets his own

The guy is out of control ... let's take advantage on the PP

why is emmerton always the one with the opportunity

can't those open pucks find one of our scorers

horrible change .. fudge

someone has to tell babcock to inspire us to play better starting the period

Chicago media memo

Didn't you get the memo ... it is old-time good hockey when Chicago does it.  I still was thinking about the Franzen cross check from behind in front of the net two games ago when Shaw drew an interference that period.

3 is not enough

signed Maple Leafs Fan

shaw

shaw gave him a dirty slew foot ... but it looked pretty innocuous.  Shaw is like a petulent child out there

crutches and x-ray

That's the rumor ... but this is not a diagnosis

I wouldn't classify the journal as relatively low

The journal strives for a different audience.  As was correctly pointed out, you do have varying levels of quality on the journal.  The allure of open access and little politics attracted me to publish there before.  In my case, there were multiple reviewers that critiqued my work and made reasonable comments, though admittedly, it is not nearly as stringent as a 'traditional' journal.

notre dame hiding info

two things upset me regardless of whether teo is stupid or malicious

1.  Notre benefitted from this story greatly yet did not issue a statement when they found out (before the big game so why get bad publicity)

2.  Even if Manti Teo was duped, that he could be moved to the point of tears for someone so much but not even to console with her family upon death suggests that he should not have made it a big deal to the press.

norfleet

Interesting that Kovacs mentions norfleet as impressing at tailback in the Chesson/Darboh article.

not to mention

the proven left tackle and plethora of tall wide receivers /s (I see Gallon having a phenomenal year next year though)

fresmen OL

Well if the freshmen on this list were suddenly juniors then I would see depth issues in my rear view...

must be a lie

Next thing you are going to tell me is that Maryland or Rutgers are joining ...

can't beat the malik report

George Malik breathes hockey.  Sometimes his health prevents him from posting but the guy loves hockey as much or more than Brian loves football.  He used to TYPE LIVE play-by-play so that people without a video feed could follow the game.

northern michigan

northern michigan 2009 I believe

when do gift card become payment

Do you have to declare gift cards when they exceed a certain amount and pay taxes on it?

sparty clearly lucked out

With all the complaining in East Lansing, I think sparty clearly has the best gifts: $150 bestbuy gift card, a watch, Outback Steakhouse gift card.  They can buy a DVR to tape the Rose Bowl that they're missing.

bowl tradition

Before the BCS mess, "some" bowl games meant a lot.  It was an opportunity for the Big 10 conference champion to play the Pac 10 champion, etc.  I would like to see us re-establish the traditional bowl rivalries and have the winners of the Big 4 play each other in a two week playoff.  The other crappy bowls can be kept for the sake of money and all that.

tom brady

tom brady may be offended (Orange Bowl).  However, looking up BCS stats the embarrassing stat is that Ohio leads ALL Div-I in BCS wins with 6!  Kinda weird I never here that though when people talk about the glories of the SEC over BIG.  So yeah, BCS is big, helps conference pride, and puts us perhaps closer to Ohio's stats.

hoke smash is kinda lame

maybe 'hoke stop' is better.

fister, porcello

fister will do well in his next game but I was encouraged by porcello and how sharp he was in the bullpen yesterday.  Tigers need to jump on the starter so we don't have to suffer the rangers bullpen.

no easy solution

The funny thing is that Detroit's utility players have actually been the most consistent hitters on our team.  The pitching has been generally decent including the bullpen.  Our big hitters: Cabrera, Martinez, Avila, Peralta really need to step up.

let's not lose hope

We have fister who is capable of going deep and it is not uncommon for the 2 - 3 - 2 to go to the home teams.

because

because it would be 2 outs and no more sacrifice is possible

way to draw contact there

I love when the batter swings and it hits him

fudge

one hitter too many ... so close to going to our closers.  We may rue the innings we could not score against a mediocre pitcher

some promising signs

Not to jinx or anything but I like that the tiger batters are being more patient this game than last when they swung at everything (at least after CJ left).  Also, it seems like Scherzer does not have is best stuff but I love how he is pounding the strike zone.  It might bight him later but walking people is the surest way to screw yourself.  Gotta make them earn it.

now water your garden!

now water your garden!

true to some degree

but my understanding was that the original call was no contact.  The catcher needs to pursue that ball ... that's bad D by Texas.  Either way, thankfully the point is moot!  Go Raburn.
