We ended up going with Venue and it was absolutely perfect. Shoutout sponsors!

Have been a bit out of the loop as of late, but why hasn't Brooks been getting a look? Injury or has his quality fallen off? He seemed like one of the more promising CBs in recent years.

As many have said, the old…

As many have said, the old stalwarts (Prof. Thoms & Brother Jimmy's in USQ) have closed in Covid. Two new alumni bars have since sprouted:

Blue Haven on 3rd Ave. (not to be confused with their other location on Houston St.) and Shaffer's on 8th ave. Both have ample space (though best to get there early or reserve a table) and have a good crowd for big games.

Aside from geography, not much separates them - though I do have a soft spot for Shaffer's wings -I'd suggest going to the bar that is closer/logistically easier for you.

Plz stay:

Plz stay:

1. Warriner - obvious.

2. Zordich - understand recruiting limitations, but unquestionably develops his position group as well as any. His track record is extensive: Lewis, Clark, Stribling, Long, Hill...and dare I say even Green is starting to show promise?

Ask again later: Jaybaugh, Gattis, Moore. I don't subscribe to the notion that Gattis is a viable candidate for HC. With the exception of 3  games last year (MSU, Indiana, ND), his offenses have been average to bad. Disjointed playcalling mixed, curious play designs and personnel decisions leave a lot to be desired. While one could argue that this is the result of Harbaugh meddling (which AFAIK is a theory that seems to be rooted in message board speculation), I think a good chunk of this falls on the OC.

Goodbye: Brown, Nua, BJM, Shoop (lol), McDaniels

Great post! Would love to see this become a regular feature...I know I'd eagerly consume it

How do we feel about Berhalter's ability to harness all this young talent that is coming through the pipeline? For the last 3-4 years I've kept telling myself that the USMNT has as much talent as it has ever had (albeit young talent), but haven't seen this carry over to performance on the field.

Perhaps I'm letting only a handful of results influence my perception (esp vs. Mexico), but it seems like we lose/struggle with teams that are in our tier, get outclassed by the blue-bloods and comfortably beat only the truly woeful teams.

A thread about the new…

A thread about the new banner was posted on 12/20/19, just after a heartbreaking, yet still encouraging, loss to Oregon. Since then, the team is 3-5, dropped out of the rankings, and have had its top players hurt and suspended.

Launch Pitbull, Lovie Smith's Beard, Mel Gibson, and niche MGoHumor into the sun...((jk)...not really)

A cursory look at the 2021…

A cursory look at the 2021 rankings show another highly rated Belleville prospect at a position of need - Damon Payne. What's the word on him?

I realize our track record at Belleville isn't stellar, but is there any interest on either side w/ him? I see he's currently Ballz'd to OSU.

First time reading this…

First time reading this column. Enjoyed it quite a bit! There were certainly references and jokes that were over my head, but nonetheless I found it funny, informative. Long, so had to imbibe it in chunks, but good nonetheless.

In what world can someone…

In what world can someone say that they'd rather have Peters than Shea as of today? It's like they are discounting an entire season's worth of data we have on Patterson plus the implication of Peters sliding to 3rd string last year. Unless you think there is some anti-Peters underhandedness going on with the coaching staff (in which case, your mind is already made up), I simply don't see how anyone can arrive at this conclusion.

Peters will (I hope) play better for the Illini than he did for Michigan. Of course. He only played, what, 3 games?, for Michigan behind a horrendous offensive line. When given the opportunity he looked like an average RS Freshman. He was fine. He's had 2 years to develop and is more used to the college game. I have no doubt will be better and look forward to seeing him play.

But let's not forget that Shea was near the top of the conference at QB across several categories. The Shea criticism through 2 weeks is warranted, but I'll need far more data on both Peters and Year 2 Shea for me to go so far as to say that I'd rather have Brandon.

Acres of space on nearly…

Acres of space on nearly every play if the ball was kept.

On one hand, perhaps the coaches instructed him not to keep. But there were also a smattering of designed runs for him, which pokes a hole in that theory. I'm a staunch Shea supporter, but if he is not making the right reads, it's on the coaches to bring it to his attention. If he continues to make mistakes, the coaches need to make a change.

Not to be all doom and gloom, but the cynic in me thinks that the unwillingness to switch to Dylan in spite of Shea's performance/potentially injury may be signal that the coaches may not trust Dylan's ability to throw the ball.

Anyway, a win is a win. Get healthy, regroup, improve.

Should get student tickets even though I currently don't have any people to go to games with?

Abso-f*cking-lutely. If you don't have anybody to go with for the first game, you assuredly will thereafter.

If I get them and decide to not go to games, is the resale decent enough to cover a decent portion of the costs considering the home slate this year?

Though I'd advise against it, reselling any of MSU, ND, and OSU should recoup your entire season ticket cost (and maybe then some). In my experience, if you plan ahead (i.e. don't try to dump tickets off at the last moment), most games re-sell for face value or better.

Is it possible to get a non-student in with a student ticket?

So long as you have a student ticket for the non-student guest (you can validate the student ticket for a fee, or, have the non-student borrow a Student ID from a lookalike friend), you should be fine. The closer the student tickets are to one another in terms of section/row, the easier it will be to relocate/sit together.

I'd prefer to see OT (Sudden death or Classic, I don't have strong opinion) followed by away goals used as a tiebreaker in the event it remains a tie after extra time. PKs as a last resort.

Threadjack - Tickets to tonights game

Apologies for the threadjack (longtime lurker, rare poster here). Thanks to a classic April snowstorm in the NYC area, I won't be able to make it to tonights game. I've got a ticket in section 328, row 25, seat 10. Would love to get this in the hands of an M fan. Selling it for what I bought it for (~$100). Need to still figure out how to transfer the ticket electronically, but if you're interested, post your email

WR/RB Flex

Deciding between Sanu (v HOU), Hopkins (v CIN), and Sankey (v PHI). Hopkins has highest upside, but I think Sankey is the safer play. Thoughts?

Also, in another league, I need to pick 2 RBs out of CJ Anderson (v. MIA), Shane Vereen (v. DET), J. McKinnon (v. GB) and SJax (v. CLE). Maybe I shouldn't have drafted AP, FJax, Toby Gerhart and Ray Rice...

Love the guy

My favorite player on the team. Never a question as far as effort goes; this guy BRINGS IT whenever he's on the field. Lays out blocks, smacks people on special teams. Most importantly, he brings much needed energy to the team that nobody else seems to do. Was at the game last night and he was only guy on the field who seemed like he wanted to be out there. Can't wait for him to get his first TD.

Based on..

The universal praise he gets from his players (perhaps until yesterday's purported lockerroom incident). There's a reason why we are still able to recruit the way we do and it certainly is not tied to on-field play. The bond that the guy has with his players and the whole "family values" mantra we've heard about so much from recruits, players and alum is clear and Hoke's greatest strength, in my opinion. There is a difference between incompetence and intentional negligence and I think Hoke falls in the former. At the end of the day, they both warrant the same action form the university...but if it gets reported that Hoke doesn't care for the well-being of his players, which I think is patently untrue, I can't help but feel for him.

It's a Shame

It'll be a shame if Hoke gets the reputation for player negligence. While I do think it's time for a change, I believe that if there is one thing that cannot be denied it's Hoke's genuine care for his players and love he has for them.

Don't get me wrong, this is an egregious error, and I think that along with the rest of the blunders across his tenure it deserves action.  But it'll be an absolute shame if a guy who loves his kids and his team so damn much  has his reputation dragged through the media as a man who does not care for his player's well being. I don't think it could be further from the truth.

Countess at Safety?

A friend and I were chatting about how our secondary could look after all the positive comments reg. Jabrill's play at corner last night. What do you think the chances of us trotting out Taylor and Peppers at the corners, with Wilson and Countess at each safety spot? I believe those to be our top 4 players in the defensive backfield (haven't heard anything about Thomas to think otherwise). I feel that Countess' field awareness and ball-hawking skills could be a great asset at safety and if the difference between him and Peppers at CB is negligble why not throw them all on the field at once (granted, I'm not sure how difficult the transition from corner to safety is)?

Yeah..

I'm as big a DG supporter as there is but man that conjured up some brutal flashbacks from early last year...

DUI

The Dukes of Hazard slide/Jerald Robinson's vandalism you can explain as 'boys being boys' But, in my mind a DUI is just as egregious as any of the offenses you just listed. Innocent lives are potentially at stake and the act is far more than 'wrong place wrong time'. It's an awful decision.

My Top 10

My experiences are a bit biased since I'm partial to games that I attended (I was a student there the last 4 years). In any case, here's how I'd rank em:

1. 1969 vs. OSU

2. Denard to 'tree: The comeback, The last second score, The rivalry and all UTL (the best sports atmosphere I have ever been in)

3. Wangler to Carter

4. Hello Heisman

5. Touchdown Manningham

6. Desmond Howard

7. Woodson vs. OSU

8. 3OT vs. Sparty

9. Forcier to Mathews (my first, live real rivalry win at Michigan Stadium)

10. Kolesar??

I be like dang

Anybody know a talent agent around here?

MSU, OSU, Minny, IU are all

MSU, OSU, Minny, IU are all going to be real, real good. Purude also has a solid class coming in. That strength, along with the fact that it's difficult to win on the road even if you are favored in the B1G, makes this league incredibly competitive next year. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if the league champ has 4-5 losses and if that happens to be us, I'd be thrilled!

Hmmmm

Stater's gonna State? or Sparty's gonna Spart?

Hilarious

Participant here, though this whole thing is doing a fine job of keeping me from finishing up work that so desperately needs to be done haha

thanks but...

After reading about what happened, let me assure you this is no joke, my friend. This James guy is sick in the head.

Question

As you can probably tell, relatively new to the blog here (though longtime reader). I never understood the 5 dead hookers reference with regard to James (that's not to say it wasn't funny in and of itself). I guess what I'm asking is there anything behind the joke? Other than, you know, the idea of him and 5 dead hookers is amusing.

Is it just me?

Is it just me but I actually don't mind the guy. Homerism aside (from both parties) I do enjoy watching both him and Tony do their thing on PTI and they've done a great job over the years. Does he have his biases? Sure, but that's part of his role in my opinion, and he's not a complete jackass about it (see Baless, Skip and Cowherd, Colin)

THanks

Thanks for the info! FYI: Rastored an image on Adobe Illustrator and then was able to print and put on poster. Total cost of printing in color, poster etc. came to under 10 bucks.

Large Faces

Sorry for thread-jacking but as you can see...I lack the points

Couple questions: 1) Is there any reason why nobody in the Maize Rage brings out the BIG faces (see Indiana, Maryland etc.)? 2) Does anyone know the best way to make them?

Right...

Rodgers didn't do anything till last year? Dude only started for 2 seasons before last year and had a QB rating of 98 or higher in both, not too shabby especially considering he won a super bowl the next year and is currently putting together the greatest season a quarterback has ever had. Dumb comment, read a book.

True..

Big Packer fan here and obviously love Woodson as he is my favorite Wolverine. That said, this season he (and the rest of our secondary for that matter) has been picked on quite a bit. His style of play has always physical but the difference between now and a few years ago is that currently it seems as though he being physical out of necessity (i.e. with age he has lost a step and has a tough time keeping up with the faster receivers) than out of preference. Earlier he had the ability to either jam a receiver or, if that fails, keep up with them with his speed. Now, not so much so if a receiver gets past him he has to resort to interfering. In either case, he has certainly made the most out of his opportunities this year and I believe that if employed as a safety he can still be elite for another few seasons.

Agreed

That and/or the termination of stoppage time. Stupid.

Gallon

Did anyone catch lil Gallon absolutely LIGHT UP the NW dback on denard's first pick? Fun to watch

Admission

I clearly remember the day I found out I got accepted. We were halfway through a long bus ride to the state semifinals for soccer and you could pretty much cut the tension with the knife as everyone was pretty nervous. I got a text from my dad 'Go Blue! Got into Mich! See you at the game!'

Though it made me lose my focus for a bit, all nerves were allayed. We went onto win that game and the next, the first state title in soccer in our 200+ year history.

Also up there is my first game at the Big House. It was the first of the RR era, against Utah. Though the result was disappointing, as a huge football fan but attending a small high school with a dreadful football team, the atmosphere, the fans and everything else had me grinning from ear to ear the whole time.

...

oh boy

Great

A fantastic piece...read it yesterday at work, gave me goosebumps. The cojones that the SEALS and any service member for that matter is truly astounding.

Also, props to the author. Incredibly well written, no idea where he got his info from but, as has been said before, reads like a movie.

This

This is awesome. As a first generation here in the states I'm the first in my family to grow up a football fan (upon moving here my dad became a huge Bills fan and introduced my to football). I feel like if I were to sign up for GB season tix now, I'd only get them once I have grand kids

Pack

Saw my first football game when I was around 5 years old. 49ers vs. GB, back when Favre was bursting onto the scene and the niners were still prominent. At the time, I wanted the Niners to win because I thought their jerseys were sweet. But GB won the game and I, as any 5 year old would do, quickly switched allegience to the victors. The rest is history. Suffice it to say that having my favorite UM player of all time be on my favorite NFL team has been..well...awesome.

Also inspiration for my handle.
