Liked the Orin Incandenza reference.

10/14/2018 - 9:22am Good recap, but that last…

Good recap, but that last sentence doesn't make much sense to me. The swim is first in a triathlon and I don't see the other two events as we have 3 big games left?

10/12/2018 - 9:52pm I am with you. I like it too…

I am with you. I like it too. Not sure if it matters, but I am 41. I don't care if they are called the Nickelback of EDM. I think that is kind of funny, even though Nickelback sucks.

I don't see the Michigan connection, though.

10/12/2018 - 9:06pm Hi there Lloyd.

Hi there Lloyd.

09/22/2018 - 10:28am Sweet 3D Excel chart. So…

Sweet 3D Excel chart. So advanced it needs another dimension.

09/02/2018 - 8:40pm Yep. It has been a decade or…

Yep. It has been a decade or more since Michigan could be counted on to win a big game.

I happened to go to Dick's Sporting Goods just north of A2 today and got into a brief discussion in line with another customer about it being a tough game to watch. The cashier interjected that, 'Michigan looked like Michigan.'  It turns out he was an OSU fan, but I had to agree.

08/17/2018 - 10:27am Great content post, but this…

Great content post, but this reply on the meta aspect of constructing your posts is even better. I am with you on appropriating the success of others into your own work.

07/23/2018 - 4:42pm I am a two time UM alum. If…

I am a two time UM alum. If my children were offered from Stanford, I'd tell them to go there. Stanford has great academics, athletics, weather, and is surrounded by great companies for internships.

07/23/2018 - 2:26pm There is a lot of precedent…

There is a lot of precedent for the righteous flaunting scripture as a justification for their actions.

06/29/2018 - 1:31pm Well, the mobile version is…

Well, the mobile version is a disaster, imo. I used to visit multiple times per day. I haven't visited in weeks. On the plus side, I am enjoying the summer weather!

03/08/2018 - 8:21pm Big box stores are still

Big box stores are still physical stores, though. They pay local taxes and employ local people. Far better than Amazon.

11/21/2017 - 10:02pm No
I never said anything about linearity, nor monotonicity as this is actually what your example addresses. Constructing a straw man argument with your misenterpretations and then knocking it down isn't difficult.
My point is that the reasons given in the explanation for past performance will likely by used in such future analyses, e.g. next year.
But, I am more interested in a  predictive model.  That is what I meant when I questioned the term 'on track.'  What expectation (prediction) are we using actual data to compare to? A serious discussion of that would be much more interesting to me.
I prefer a quantitative measure, say wins. Because obviouslly that matters most in sports. What are the forecasted number of wins in year 3? What factors are relevant? Those factors will likely be relevant in year 4. I understand the difficulty with this, high dimensionality, small sample size, ample risk, etc.
So, maybe something else, perhaps rankings in your favorite statistical categories?  Something quantitative would be nice to measure against vis-a-vis being 'on track.'
Otherwise it is easy to slip into historical revisionism or engange in rejoinders like the importance of 'being competitive.' That is not qualitative analysis. If you want to go that route, it should be much more robust than what the post offered. Let's see some solid success criteria and measure progress against that. It could be an interesting discussion with many varying opinions.
11/21/2017 - 8:29pm et tu?

"That reasoning certainly is a load of shit"

I am not as well versed as you in the realm of sports media coverage, but that seems like a 'hot take.'

"But it is also a pretty typical take from just about anyone on 97.1 and all their callers. Incredible how people get paid money to come up with this shit."

It is more surprising to me that there are people like you that consume it.

11/21/2017 - 12:38pm Might not be 'off track', but not on track

Obvious question begging with the title. Define 'on track.'

For many that would indicate we are winning our share of rivary games and moving confidently in the direction of winning the lion's share.

This is clearly not the case. You can legitimately explain why, but that doesn't change the result.

To get better you have to improve. Being healthier and having better recruits isn't improvement. It shows the potential for improvement. But, hey so does a better coach, and we have seen how that doesn't magically transform into winning national championships.

The reasons that justify our current situation also point to why it will not happen next year.

11/13/2017 - 3:52pm Wow...

You are an optimist. I like it!

10/15/2017 - 4:22pm Agree

Our offense is the most pathetic I have seen since Threet/Sheridan. Absolutely abysmal.

10/14/2017 - 8:08pm Go Chieftans!

Utica High class of 1995 here. I had no idea Higdon was from the U (kind of). Our football team was perennially terrible.

09/09/2017 - 9:57pm Agreee

In general, this review of the game really glossed over the ugliness. Speight is starting where he left off last year, which isn't very good. Unfortunately he appears to be the best option. Hopefully he improves quickly.

08/31/2017 - 12:26pm Yes ticket, yes take her

What most people said is correct. I took my daughter to her first game when she was a year old, and she has a September birthday.

Go in with realistic expectations. Dont expect it to be a great game watching experience for you. She may not like it. It is pretty boring for a little one. Bring a bunch of snacks to keep her occupied. If you make it to half time consider it a win. The game will be decided by then anyway.

Good luck!

08/31/2017 - 9:17am Florida wins

13 - 17

08/28/2017 - 7:11pm Better than the whites

Also, I wish people would stop saying they are 'all maize.' I see a fair amount of blue.

07/26/2017 - 5:25pm Jumping the shark

Yeah, as if the draftageddon wasn't enough, now this?

I happen to have a master's degree in urban planning and work for a firm in A2 involved with some of those projects you so wholeheartedly deride.

Your opinions are cute.

Don't quit your day job, man.

07/19/2017 - 8:39pm I don't think you know what

I don't think you know what the word gimmick means. Innovation is a better word here.

07/19/2017 - 8:29pm Yes

Got it last week at Literati.

07/11/2017 - 12:29pm No, hate it.

I didn't realize others felt this way. A post or two, fine. But it seems to never end. Fantasy Sports are cool, but blogging about a draft for a month is lame.

07/10/2016 - 3:54pm Hah

I see what you did there.

06/18/2016 - 7:59pm Alaska

Went on an Alaskan cruise. It was awesome. Most people don't realize, but the coast is a rain forest. Fun times zip lining in the forest as well as watching glaciers calve and seeing more bald eagles than we could count.

Older crowd, but that didn't matter too much to us since it was a honeymoon. After landing in Anchorage, we went to Denali for a few days. Absolutely amazing there.

Drinking Rampant IPA.

06/08/2016 - 8:01pm Huh...

What in that hilarious act required such a pointed response by Ace?

I read this as brilliant by this group of Rutgers students. To me they have a great sense of humor...

05/08/2016 - 11:17am Yes to Weller's

It will be 10 years for us in August. We had our ceremony outdoors and the reception in the basement area. It was beautiful. The wedding party stayed at Webers, so we continued the fun there into the night.

We certainly did not book 20 months in advance as we got engaged at Christmas and married 9 months later.

Also, we were married the last Saturday before football.

04/20/2016 - 2:35pm Bad map

As someone that has worked in GIS for twenty years, that map is just not good. So many issues.

04/09/2016 - 4:16pm Best sentence ever

Right below the Dymonte gif:

"The back end was the most uplifting for me."

04/09/2016 - 11:14am Yay running

For the past 10 years I have been averaging 700 miles or so a year. This year my goal is 1000. I ran the A2 half marathon on Sunday. Training for that has gotten me off to a good start.

And you can definitely train year round outside in MI. I trained with a group this winter. Every Sunday at 7 a.m. we had a long group run. Sometimes it was below zero without the windchill. Just dress appropriately.

08/29/2015 - 11:35am I was also a freshman that year...

I was in A2 that day. Walking down South U and all of the sudden the street erupted with cheers. I ran into MDen, no longer there, and saw the highlight. Great moment welcoming me to campus. We had such high hopes for Dreisbach after that game.

08/08/2015 - 3:40pm Classes start Sept 8

So, leaving early isn't an issue.

07/16/2015 - 9:01pm Huh

I recall it differently. My freshman and sophomore years in 95 and 96 they won the Big Ten...and beat us.

Those losses were part of the M standing for mediocre and 4 loss Lloyd talk.

07/16/2015 - 8:55pm Camera man

I was in the student section at a game in 96, I believe. The camera man was wearing a Blackhawks jacket and got pelted all game with marshmallows.

03/17/2015 - 11:13pm Huh...

I never really thought of Brian as a writer. To me he has always seemed like an engineering grad that liked UM sports a lot.

I mean, I like his writing, but I wouldn't call him a 'writer.' Blogger is much more apporopriate.

Obviously he is not even remotely in the class of Pratchett and Wallace et. al.

I get that he wants to personalize an epitaph, but to me it comes off as self-aggrandizing.

01/13/2015 - 3:42pm Brighton is great for a family

Things I like about Brighton ("city"):

Nice walkable downtown. I live just over a mile from the center and I regularly jog through town. Plenty of sidewalks within the city limits (not in the township).

Great for families. There is the Imagination Station downtown.  It is a series of wooden play structures.  The biggest one I have seen.  We frequently run into people we know around town. There is a nice sense of community.

Good Schools.

It is 20 min up 23 from A2.

Lots of UM fans.

Drew Henson went to Brighton High School.

Very close to Kensington MetroPark, Huron Meadows MetroPark, Brighton State Rec Area, Pinkney Rec area, and others.

Check it out.

10/10/2010 - 12:26pm I don't know, but I was at

I don't know, but I was at the Moundros family tailgate before the game yesterday. Very hospitable people!

07/10/2010 - 5:36pm good point

Lebron and RichRod both have bad PR instincts.

06/22/2010 - 1:00pm Right, that is where I read

Right, that is where I read it first, well actually I read the blurb which redirected me there.

I think it is hilarious that it made it to, especially since the press release was rejected.

06/16/2010 - 1:51pm no. once a year is perfect.

no. once a year is perfect. that is what makes the game so important.

although, i do agree that playing another game after it diminshes the dramatic effect.  but, like others have posted, there isn't a way to avoid that sad fact.  at least delany will keep it the last regular season game of the year.

06/16/2010 - 1:45pm why would you want this?

so we would be guaranteed to play them during the big ten regular season, then we could also play them in the championship game?  this makes absolutely no sense.  if we split these games then the winner of the last game wins the conference.  uhh, no thanks.

06/11/2010 - 2:49pm uh no. if nebraska didn't

uh no. if nebraska didn't come to the big ten, none of this would have ever happened.

06/11/2010 - 2:18pm Why did you think that Miles

Why did you think that Miles was unproven?  He was headed to the NC.  I agree that RR was a proven coach, but he never went to the NC.  In fact, many feel he bungled his chance that year in the Pitt game.

06/11/2010 - 9:29am Nice way to stick with the

Nice way to stick with the theme.  I completely agree with your point.  Larry Scott was hired to bring change to the Pac 10 and make it more relevant.  At first blush, he seems to be doing just that.    Howeva, I think he is a newb that is out of his league (in this case the WTA), and doesn't understand the maneuvering required to make change happen.

Delany is looking like a mad schemer orchestrating the realignment.

Larry Scott is just a butterfly flapping his wings, whereas Delany is controlling the weather.

06/11/2010 - 9:15am Brian, I assume you take this

Brian, I assume you take this back from ?

There is virtually nothing that can convince me that not taking Demar Dorsey is a good idea as long as the university makes a good-faith effort to educate him once he arrives. What you do with the poor black kid after he shows up is what reflects the character of the institution.

In my comment here, I disagreed with this point.  Apparently people disagreed with me since I received negative points.

I was surprised by your comment above.  Your post today is more thoughtful.

06/11/2010 - 9:08am the definition of character

character - noun

1. the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
So clearly, the character of the university is partly determined by its academic reputation, as that is a trait.  The academics of the incoming students influence the academic reputation of the university.  Hence, the academics of the incoming students reflect the character of the institution.
I really can't be any clearer than that.
